Comments about Hennessy Hammock Expedition A-Sym Hammock:
I can only add that the other reviewers are right about the sleeping comfort afforded by a Hennessey. It's sturdy, well build product that sets up anywhere you can find suitable trees. The no-see-um netting excludes all bugs. Where the HH lacks is in warmth and quick setup and take down. With modifications these issues can be overcome. You must insulate yourself from the air beneath the HH. A pad inside under your sleeping bag works, but as noted elsewhere it can be tricky staying on top of it. To fix this problem I made an underquilt insulated with Thinsulate-200 for both my and my wife's HH. I've used my HH comfortably down to 28F with this arrangement. The setup speed is another issue. The knot Hennessey recommends is slow to tie and untie. If you're in a hurry to set up in rain then the knot seems to take forever. Likewise if you're in a hurry to take the hammock down, as I did once in a rapidly rising wind that threatened to shred the fly and hammock. The solution is Clamcleat [...]. With a pair of cleats rigged on the suspension lines setup/takedown is about as fast as it can possibly be. A warning: you will have to change the suspension lines from the hard laid line Hennessey supplies to something softer. A 5mm or 6mm 1100 lb test line [...] works very well. Suitable line can also be had from your nearest marine gear store. Remove the tapered cover over the suspension line attachment to the hammock, untie the original line, and duplicate the knots with the new line. The original line will jam very tight, so tight that it will be VERY difficult to remove, if used with this or other Clamcleat products. I've used the CL234 for 18 days in the wilderness, in rain, heat, and mild cold weather this summer and will not go back to the original arrangement. The Clamcleat website can point you at local or mailorder sources for their products. One last comment: the 1" tree straps are too narrow to protect the soft bark on some trees. Make yourself 2" straps from seatbelt material to replace the original straps.

I did a backpacking trip last November with my old 10 LB “lite weight” backpacking dome tent. After realizing that this tent didn’t cut it (I didn’t want to lug it that’s for sure), I start looking at getting a new shelter system. I did some research and decided to go with a Hennesey Hammock. I did my first field test in early April 08 on the AT and it performed great. It was easy to set up and I had much more site flexibility than my tenting partners. I stayed in the hammock rather than the shelters and didn’t get attacked by mice. I would recommend that a potential hammocker learn about under-insulation. I stayed high and in a torrential downpour and by the end of the 4 day trek was still fresh in the morning while my ground dwelling hiking partners got stiffer with each morning. This product EXCEEDED my expectations.

Comments about Hennessy Hammock Expedition A-Sym Hammock:
I recently became a hammock lover after buying the Hennessy. My only complaints were the undersized rain fly it came with and the fact that the bug mesh is not removable. The bug mesh is great in the buggy seasons but in winter it's not needed and the fact that it's not removable makes it a little awkward to get into and out of with a lot of sleeping gear. If you do use this hammock in colder weather I suggest using a sleeping pad under you. So far I've used the hammock down to 35˙ with a pad and I was fine. As for legnth and room to move, I'm 6' 3" and I fit without any problems. This a great product and I highly recommend it.

I have used this hammock for 2+ years now. From canoe camping to backpacking the trails in Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. Best sleep ever! Kept the bugs out for a week long trip in the Boundary Waters. I modified the original hanging instructions by attaching light prussics to the hanging line and two ultralight carabiners. Set up and take down is a snap. Have weathered several good rain storms with the 30% larger fly and stayed nice and dry. Cold weather camping can be done with necessary additions. Hammock is great for most 3 season camping with the use of a pad. I will not sleep on the ground again if I can rig the hammock. [...] Only complaint I have is I didn't have this 20 years ago.

The Hennessey was the first hammock that I tried. I made it the first night okay. The second night I got out and slept on the ground.I found that it was really so much trouble to get into and get situated that I immediatly sold it.I am now a diehard hammocker since I have two other hammocks that I really swear by.

I bought one of these after many comfortable nights in a Byer Moskito hammock thinking this would be a nice upgrade. After four hours of fighting with this thing, I balled it up and returned it in disgust. The fly is ridiculously small, the entry system is plain weird, the sleeping position is atrocious and its construction is horrible.I went with another manufacturer and paid substantially more for it, but it was well worth the extra money to buy an American designed, [...]

I first bought this for backpacking but it is used for it all, car camping, group camping even when I had a cot in a cabin I slept in the Hennessey! I have not slept in it for more than 4 nights in a row though. I have heard that for extended trips sleeping in any hammock can be bad for your back.
Season wise, i slept in the 27deg snowing night no problem, what saved me was a car windshield reflector under my thermorest
It can be difficult to get situated with a thermorest and sleeping bag though.

Most comfortable sleeping arraignment I have ever had! The asymmetrical design lets you sleep virtually flat and I have actually woken up in the morning to find myself on my stomach. I use a half inch Therma-Rest for insulation in the winter months and have stayed warm at 15 degrees with my sleeping bag. Condensation and precipitation can be combated with a little fly adjustment. It did take me a while to get used to setting it up, maybe three weeks of daily use. But once I got it down, it is a breeze to set up now in > 5 minutes.

If you are going to Hammock camp, take some time on the web to see what others are doing. This is a three season product, extendable to 4 with modifications. Simple to set up and simpler to tear down, especially with Snakeskins. You need a pad to be warm and staying on the pad is a breeze- if you are smart enough to put it in the bag with you, or, consider a bag with integrated pad. With that arrangement alone, in a 20 degree bag, I was quite comfortable at 35. Throw an undercover on with additional padding, and 20 degrees was a breeze. Pitch an oversize fly seperately and you will have an easier time maintaining your campsite, as well as providing a place to tear down in foul weather. Weight with the oversize fly and undercover is just over 4 lbs.

I got the hammock a couple of years ago and haven't used my tent since. Cold weather 25 Deg. (Savage Gulf Tn.) Pouring rain (Jack's River Ga.) Stayed warm and dry. In my tent I would always wake up every couple of hours. With the Hennesee I slept all night for the first time on the trail. I would suggest getting one to anyone.
