Comments about Black Diamond GTX FrontPoint Gaiters:

I bought these last minute for work since I was going to be spending a couple days in deep snow. I'm a huge fan of Black Diamond's products and these are no exception. They can take a beating, they stay in place over your boot and keep even the lightest snow out. They are a lot more expensive than most gaiters but they're worth every penny. I will say to be careful and size them correctly, I purchased a small and they are extremely tight, yet still comfortable. I really have no complaints about them at all.

Comments about Black Diamond GTX FrontPoint Gaiters:

I've had these or ones like these for about 10 years. The only difference between mine and these are that mine are black with white lettering only. I've used them winter and spring hiking through the mountains, hunting in wet weather, etc... They've never failed me until the past year or two. A hole has finally developed, but I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of them.

Even though they are "GoreTex" they're not really breathable. My feet and ankles do get hotter in them than without. But I'd rather have some clamminess than full on getting wet.

Upon researching a new pair, I cringe at the prices, but I guess you get what you pay for. Most of the other's I've looked at seem to have poor durability. I'll have to spring for another pair of these BDs.

Comments about Black Diamond GTX FrontPoint Gaiters:

I've been using these for about a year doing general mountain stuff.

These gaiters have steel hooks that you're supposed to fasten to your shoelace. The underside of these hooks (the parts that touch the lace) have sharp edges. Once I came home from an outing and found that these gaiters had almost shredded my boot lace. I tried to fix this problem with a file but failed. I resorted to placing duct tape on the hooks, but ultimately I've stopped using the hooks altogether.

I broke a strap yesterday by simply pulling on it.

They generally fit my legs but they'll usually slouch every couple hours of hard slogging. This is annoying.

They're not breathable enough. When I'm working hard my legs get sweaty beyond mortal comprehension. All of this condensation seems to stay in the gaiter and run off into my boot.

Comments about Black Diamond GTX FrontPoint Gaiters:

yes, they fit tight. i've been using them with my size 12 plastic double boots. however my XL gaiters do fit my double boots, and they fit size 47 (US 13) la sportiva trango extremes too. if you use a 13+ plastic boot, get the XL Black Diamond Apex gaiter.

I've also never had an issue with the buckle, and the material is very durable. my crampons have scraped them multiple times and they haven't ripped.

Comments about Black Diamond GTX FrontPoint Gaiters:

I use it for day hikes in mud and deep snow in the winter and early spring. The quality is superb and I have had none of the issues that others complain about. The straps are strong and nylon reinforced. The buckles are tough. I hit rocks and tree stumps and the buckles still look new. The front lace hook can be tucked in the velcro and not used. The cord at the top is fastened by a push tab that is sewn to the gaiter. Smart design! The lower half of the gaiter is covered in a ballistic nylon that sheds abrasions from your boot soles. They are unlikely to tear like other brands. Again, smart design! The cut is slimmer than others and this might create problems for plastic oversized boots. XL fits my size-11 medium Merrell hiking boots and light KEEN hiking shoes. The fit is trim and they do not fall down even if the calf strap is left loose. Well made and excellent for deep snow and mud. I love them.

Comments about Black Diamond GTX FrontPoint Gaiters:

I've used a pair for 4-5 years. worked perfectly in relentless postholing above the knees, to classic snow climbs mixed with rock. Sorry to hear some had buckle issues, maybe I have an older pair but they are still together. I really like the trimmed fit, they shed crampon snags well. I have a pair of OR crocs, also good, but I felt are too baggy. Agree with, dont see how these will go over a plastic boot. for me I'm more of a spring/summer use and lightweight or hybrid mt boot.

Comments about Black Diamond GTX FrontPoint Gaiters:

I got my pair back in 2002 when my wife and I backpacked from the east coast to the west coast through the highlands of Scotland. One leg of our journey required that crossed Rannoch Moor. The standard joke was that it is 12-14 miles depending on if it's raining. Why? When it's raining, the already wet and boggy moor becomes a like a swamp and you cannot simply walk directly across. On a number of occasions, I sunk into the boggy, wet soil all the way up to my knees. Yet, the water never got under my gaiters.

I also use these when ice climbing, doing snow approaches that involve lots of "post-holing," etc. Never have these gaiters failed me.

I used these on two hikes in the snow before the buckle on one of them broke. I considered it a fluke and exchanged them for a new pair. On the next hike, the strap broke. They worked great when they weren't broken, but they are not durable at all.
