Comments about Traveler II Coffee Grinder:
Good coffee begins with freshly ground beans. The stuff in a can is not as good. Fresh ground coffee in a sealed container goes stale in a day or two. People who really like good coffee know. This will grind up to 1/2 cup of beans in a batch, which will brew a 10 cup pot. The grinding burr can be adjusted with an internal screw which is turned to grind fine to coarse coffee as needed for different types of coffee brewing devices. A few trial and error runs to refine the technique should be done at home before going camping. It takes a few minutes of cranking the handle to grind the beans. The flattened shape fits into the hand well to hold the grinder against the cranking force. The handle stores inside. Good points: compact, sturdy, self-contained, internal cup to catch ground coffee, relatively light, fairly priced, hand powered, and can survive weather. This gadget makes good ground coffee. There are alternatives: Electric blade choppers are fast and cheap and not adjustable. Electric burr grinders are a bit more expensive and adjustable, but overheat the coffee in the grinding process and have to be plugged in to work. Big heavy electric burr grinders that are geared to reduce the grinding heat are very expensive. There are some beautiful German made hand grinders available at 2 or 3 times the price that have a longer handle and work faster and are too nice for camping, but would be a great choice for home use. A hammer and cutting board can work in a pinch, but smashed coffee beans fly all over. I have used this with a french press brewer that was found just to the right on the [...]shelf. French press brewers need a coarse ground coffee, and will leave some sediment in the coffee. I also have used a Melitta cone brewer that uses # 2 paper filters. The cone brewers use a fine grind to extract the best flavor in my opinion. There are some individual cup brewers that would make a very good choice for backpackers. Minimalists can boil coffee in a pot and strain it through a bandana. And if freshly roasted beans are available from a local java shop, use them. Good quality water is also essential. Coffee will stay hot and fresh in a vacuum bottle for several hours. Never use detergent to clean coffee equipment. It spoils the taste. Baking soda and water are much better for cleaning. People who go out hiking and camping already have enough fire inside them to not need coffee. It is a comfort however, to enjoy a really good cup of coffee in camp.

Comments about Traveler II Coffee Grinder:
On a boat, anything that uses electricity is suspect. If it uses electricity it will eventually break, it uses precious resources, and has a cord that gets in the way.
This little guy works like a champ, especially if you are only making enough for a couple of cups of coffee. If you're going to make enough for 12 cups, you'll be grinding for a while (maybe 20 minutes or so).
But for a couple of cups, you'll have it ground in a couple of minutes, and it's a good way to appreciate your coffee. Absolutely works great, and I've gotten rid of the electrical grinder we had before.
A bigger handle would be nice, to speed up the grinding, but all in all it's great.

Must... Have.... Coffee!... I can't function in the morning without that first cup of delicious espresso.
This grinder works really well at making fresh ground coffee, anywhere! I use it with the GSI espresso maker on my jetboil and make great espresso in the woods, everytime. Like others have said, if you like good coffee, freshly ground beans are of utmost importance. This delivers.
It has also served me well during power outages, (I live in a rural area and lose power often), with this grinder I can always have great coffee or espresso regardless of the power situation.
Highly reccomended!

Comments about Traveler II Coffee Grinder:
Works very well for bringing beans to work and then getting a "little" bit of exercise while grinding, also a good conversation starter. I've had a lot of interest from co-workers on getting their own.
