Comments about CMI Rescue 8 Belay Device:
The Rescue 8, or Figure of 8 with ears, is the standard belay device almost every rope rescue system for the following reasons:
- Easy to use
- Easy to setup
- Very Low Cost
- Will take any size rope
- Will take 1 or 2 ropes
- Can function as a rigging plate / Anchor Plate
- Extra hole (small one in the middle) can accept a carabiner with a runner; great for pick off's on rappel.
- Easy to lock off (LEARN THE RIGHT WAYS TO DO IT)
- Ears will prevent death knot (girth hitch) when slack enters the system.
Not everyone needs to have it, but its fun to play with and can be very useful if you ever want a multi-purpose tool that you can use for rappelling, anchor plates, and for the just-in-case voice in you.
One thing I have never liked: It twists the rope as it goes through the device, making the end below you harder to deal with, especially when repacking into rope bags.

Comments about CMI Rescue 8 Belay Device:
The Rescue 8 is the basic belay/lowering tool in technical rescue. While not as controllable as more advanced tools, it does the job and is easy to set up. Great for a simple emergency/back up belay line.
