Best Kids Hiking and Climbing shoes

These shoes are fantastic! We are about to buy our tree climbing, camping, hiking little girl a third pair. The tread and ankle protection is why we bought them and they are still holding up when she grows out of them. The laces and tongue thing is a simple fix. I personally never tie my laces over the speed layers anyway. It seems like kind of a no brainer to me to wrap them over the speed pacers and tie underneath but I guess not everyone does that? Weird. But ok. Anyway. I think people will miss out on what is possibly the best kids’ hiking shoe available. These shoes are excellent tools for climbing and hiking.

The laces are NOT a problem 👍

The issue people are having with the laces behind the tongue is easily remedied by wrapping the string over the top of the hook, rather than the bottom of the hook, then crossing to tie the shoes. My son has worn this style for the past 2 years. He has done everything in them! They've held up great. Only need to be replaced because he's outgrown them. Tying the laces like this actually makes the shoe fit better. Some runners even do this to running shoes with lace holes. Skip the hole below the top hole, go through the top hole, then back through the hole you skipped, then tie the laces.

Very Poor Design

I love Merrell shoes and have been using them for over 10 years, but this design is terrible. The tongue is not tall enough to provide adequate coverage/space between the laces and the front of the ankle. At any point the tongue can slide down, meaning the laces would have direct contact with the sock/ankle. This really seems like Merrell rushed through this process and didn't vet this design properly with kids. I'll be returning these and getting something else.

Great waterproof hiking boots

I bought my daughter a pair of waterproof Merrell hiking boots for a trip to Iceland and they did not disappoint! They kept her feet warm and dry, they kept grip on slippery surfaces and they were comfortable. I will definitely buy Merrill boots again in the future.

Very disappointed

I bought 2 pairs for my kids and they can't wear them due to a flawed design that I see others complain about. A complete disappointment

Tongue is WAY too short - otherwise, great boot.

I purchased these for my daughter, she loves the color of the blue pair. Fit and comfort were great…until we laced up the boots and saw the length deficit of the tongue. VERY disappointing. In the future, Merrill - I sincerely hope you reconsider and add some length to the tongue of this boot style. I will definitely be checking this before purchase next time. To the reviewer in Denton Tx - THANK YOU!!! The photos you posted were very helpful. Bringing the laces up and over the top metal loops instead of under saved us from returning these boots.

Tongue of boot too short.

Wish I'd read these reviews. We have the same issue with the laces and the tongue. The tongue is too short and the laces were sitting against her ankle. We tried lacing just to the top hole, leaving the hook at the top without a lace, and she started tripping because the loop of the laces caught on the hook at the top (on the other shoe). We bought these from another store, I have just finalized the return and will be buying a different brand. Very disappointed because until now, Merrell were our go to brand for hiking boots.

DON’T DO IT

These are some of the most poorly constructed shoes I have ever purchased. The tongue is not long enough, so when you tie them all the way up, the top of the tongue is below the ties, and the ties dig into the ankle. So I tied them below the hooks, where they would hit the tongue, but the hooks stuck out so much that they would grab the ties of the other shoe and my son was constantly tripping! How could Merrell manage to make such a disaster of a hiking boot after all these years?? I’m hoping I can still return them.
