My favorite hiking boots for Alaska!

These boots are amazing. They are breathable, and also waterproof. I wore them all summer in Alaska hiking multiple 10+ mile trails and they never failed me. They are "true-to-size" and I never had a blister. They also offer great traction in slippery areas. I highly recommend them. My only criticism is due to the fabric/material they can be hard to wash. However, the fabric hides dirt very well.

3+ years of use: Bad tread design/can't trust them

I bought these women's Adrika hiking boots 3.5 years ago for a round-the-world hiking trip, and unfortunately felt the need to write this feedback since nearly hike #1, but didn't get around to it until now. I'd guesstimate I've put around 700+ miles on these, maybe more. I've done everything from desert loops to snow hikes (never thru hikes though!) and have done distances ranging from 5 to 20 miles in a day, many times with 10-11 mile hikes on several days in a row. So feel I've given them a fair shake. And this is the skinny... I'll start with some positives: - The style -- these barely look like hiking boots and are so, so stylish. I partially bought them for this as I'd be wearing them in cities and on trails and wanted something that could do both. While they could do the cities, they weren't amazing on the trails... but more on that later. - Waterproofing -- after nearly 4 years, they're still waterproof, even without constant cleaning/care done. Many river crossings, rainy days, and snowy adventures later and my feet still stay dry (but not warm.. again, more on that later). - Blisters -- I don't think these ever gave me blisters except for one river hike where my socks and these got wet inside, which honestly is expected. I always wear SmartWool Merino wool socks, for reference. Now for the negatives: - The grip + sole design: The triangular grip on these just doesn't work. A grip that relies on something sticking out from the boot (instead of treads that carve into the sole) just doesn't make sense. I thought it might be in my head, but they slip so, so badly. On our first hike, I was slipping on dry rock. Then it happened again, and again, and again. I found I didn't trust my hiking boots... even when they were brand new. In wet or scree conditions, I seriously worried for my safety. Which definitely isn't how you want to feel about the gear that's keeping you upright on tight mountain cliffs. Also, because the triangles stick off the boot, they wear down so quickly. The bottom of my boot is nearly bald in the high traffic areas (heel, ball of foot). - Cushion: As the tread wore down (which was quickly!), I noticed more and more that I could feel every rock and stone -- it felt like walking in $5 Old Navy flip flops, honestly. I was avoiding every sharp-ish surface I could see. Not ideal when you hike in the mountains or even walk on cobbled streets. - Warmth: I wore these on a glacier hike (very basic one, nothing major) and my feet were so cold, it was torture by the end. And it was June, so not even that cold of weather. I understand not all boots are made for all-weather, so fair enough that these might not be, but it wasn't great. I wanted to provide this as I hope it can be useful to know how the boots wear after time. I just really hope Danner decides to ditch the triangular tread, it is NOT good. If that improved and perhaps the cushioning, I think these would be a contender for a great boot. Even after the disappointment of these, I am debating the Mountain 600s, which seem to have better tread and more durability.

It's so hard for me

It's so hard for me to find shoes that work because I have wide flat feet and these are the perfect width. They don't have a lot of arch support, which I prefer, because you I can always add in an insole if I choose. I love the aesthetic and the feel of the shoe. I barely had to break them in because they were comfortable right away.

I love this shoe except

I love this shoe except for the back portion. It digs into my leg and causes a lot of pain. Unfortunately it didn’t hurt when I tried them on but once I got to hiking it was painful and it felt bruised for days after. I have tried them again a few times hoping to break them in but the two ridges on the heel side where it meets your leg are just not a good design and I don’t understand how it would be comfortable on anyone. Otherwise they are very lightweight and the rest of the shoe is great, I just won’t wear them due to the pain from the design of the back. Change this to a flat edge and this shoe would be perfect.

Good grip, watertight, and comfortable!

I bought these after some deliberation and finally settled on the light leather color with a white sole. Two things have stood out: 1) Right out of the box, they were COMFY. No breaking in, no unnecessary sore feet. They were ready to go and felt great. 2) They were way more waterproof than I thought (on the upper boot!). I expected the soles to be tight, but wasn't sure about the upper part. I went on a 10 mile hike with some elevation gain and watery areas, and spent about 100 feet scrambling up an area with running water and crossing a stream. Getting the boots wet was unavoidable, and I was prepared for damp socks, but nope! The water beaded up and they stayed dry. Super nice. I love them, I love how they look, and I love how they feel! Great boots so far, with a good grip and comfy design. I normally wear a size 9 shoe, and I ordered a 9.5. That was definitely roomy, but I wanted them roomy for hiking. I added in some extra padded insoles and wore hiking socks and really appreciated the extra room over a longer distance.

Two Seasons in Kodiak, AK

I love these hiking boots. They are truly waterproof but also do not get too hot. Very comfortable, wide footbed. They lasted two full seasons of hiking in Alaska (multiple 9+ mile hikes with 3K ft. elevation increase). I am planning to buy a second pair.

Mostly great!

Stiff around the ankle, the tongue digs in and created a sore spot. The tread is awesome! They keep your feet warmer and drier than any other brand I have worn.

These boots are so comfortable

These boots are so comfortable out of the box! Haven't hiked in them yet though. I ordered my normal size (7) originally, but felt that my toes were just brushing up against the end of the toe box so I opted to go up a half size to 7.5 to give my toes some extra room, as they tend to get crunched into the front on the downhills anyway. I think they FIT true to size, but I just felt I would be at less risk of losing a toenail if I gave myself a little extra space (plus with thicker socks, probably won't even have that much extra room).

Favorite Boots

I just happened across these in a Bozeman MT shop as I was about to throw in the towel on finding a decent pair of hikers. I'd never heard of Danner before this, but after slipping these babies on I knew it was going to be the start of a beautiful relationship. These took ZERO breaking-in as they were comfy from day one for me. I've gone on short hikes and just this past summer (I've owned them for 2 years now), they were my flyfishing wet-wading boots. They worked like a charm on the riverbed and dried out pretty quickly and without any shape change. LOVE these and will likely buy another pair soon just to be sure I have another set for when these finally go out and before Danner stops making them (although they should make these in perpetuity!). My usual size (8) fit just right.
