Best sandals ever!
I’ve hiked 35 miles over all in these and I adore them! My most recent trip got rained out in the last quarter of the hike. Everyone’s Merrell’s were soaked the next day while my Chacos, after getting whipped down and socks changed, were good to go! I appreciate the opportunity to show of my socks as well. These are raised perfectly off the ground that if you step in mud you’ll be fine. (I did my best to avoid the mud all together but when I miss a step it was all good). If you are planning on wearing them on the trail they’re great as well if your feet swell or are prone to being uncomfortable in regular shoes because you can adjust the straps. These are also perfect for everyday wear! -my only complaint is after my first time wearing them the inside of the Chaco strap started coming off.
Poor strap and buckle design
This was my first pair of Chacos and to say I was disappointed is an understatement. The first time I put these on the buckle started snagging the strap and it was all downhill from there. The strap fabric is not as tight and durable as I would have thought and essentially each time you try to undo the buckle to take off the shoe the strap gets caught in the teeth of the buckle. The other seams are also starting to come loose. Poor design, poor quality and I sadly returned them.
Disappointing Purchase
Love Chaco and was excited to find these for my three week outdoor adventure because they were lightweight. Boy was I disappointed. These sandals unfortunately caused horrible blisters near my arches where the fabric seam rubbed and rubbed. I ended up walking on a trail barefoot due the pain. The ONLY way to wear them was to use them as loose as possible, and without the back strap. OR….. use medical tape/mole skin where they rubbed. However, eventually the tape gets to be a mess and you’re left with the rubbing again. They are super lightweight and great in a kayak or raft. Just forget wearing them once you’re out of your water craft or on a trail! Not worth $100.
Cute, but terrible fit.
I am a size 7.5-8 and fit just right into a 7. I am not sure that these are built for human feet though. There is no way around your skin rubbing off above your arch. Definitely not worth the purchase.
Comfortable but disappointing
These sandals are very comfortable and I appreciated how easy they were to wear to the beach. They're easy on and easy off... one problem is that the straps slip so I find I'm tightening them all day. The other problem is that the soles are mostly worn down after one summer of use. If I'm paying $100 for a pair of shoes I expect them to last longer than a few months. So they were ok but not sturdy enough for anyone who wears them on rocks or pavement.
Comfy but needs improvement
I’ve been wearing these for a month and have been thinking about my review. These are way more comfy for everyday wear than traditional Chacos (I’ve been wearing for 15 years), but they need some improvements. The footbed is nice and squishy and soft and super comfy but it gets torn up on the top edge very easily and starts fraying. I think that happened on my first walk around town. The footbed also showed dirt and grime immediately after wearing in the summer (I guess more my fault). My main critique are the straps- they don’t stay tight during a walk at all! I don’t get my usual Chaco blisters but they come lose right away while walking. Hopefully the second version of these sandals are better because I think they are on to something good.
Great idea, comfy footbed, but not for narrow feet
Pros: lightweight, attractive, appropriately cushioned footbed Cons: I cannot get the straps to fit snugly enough on my narrow feet. This leads to an uncomfortable flapping at the front. I bought these because my old Chaco Zs finally bit the dust and I wanted light adventure sandals like Tevas but with Chaco support. Sadly, even cranked all the way down, they still flap uncomfortably and perhaps dangerously. My feet have moderate arches and generally take an A width.
much better than original Z series!
I have a fairly narrow foot, size 8, and these fit perfectly. The straps won't tighten any further than where I have them, so if you have a slim foot try them on before purchasing. They're MUCH lighter, have a thinner footbed, & lower heel than my classic Z1s. The adjustable heel strap feature is a gamechanger, as my other pairs are loose in the heel. The mauve color translates exactly as shown on the web, with the straps being quite lavender & the PVC parts a bit more pinkish/mauve. I don't think I'll be able to wear my other Chacos after these! I do suspect they won't hold up as long as my classics, due to the addition of the inherently cheap faux leather side pieces, but only time will tell (plus Chaco's & REI have excellent customer support!).
I’m On The Chaco Train
Holy moly, this Chaco! Okay, I had a pair of original Chacos that wouldn’t break in after over a year of having them. They were so heavy and my feet hurt so bad, I could never get on the Chaco bandwagon no matter how badly I wanted to. I swear by my Teva’s and have a few pairs by them. But now, I can *finally* hop on the Chaco train with these sandals! I’ve only had them for almost a week now, but they’re all I wear. They’re so light compared to other Chacos and my flat feet don’t hurt after wearing them. They’re so comfortable! I have no doubts about their durability because they’re Chacos. I can’t wait to wear these to the crag and to the water when we’re allowed to social cuddle again. I wear an 8.5 on a high average, but I purchased these in an 8 to avoid the look of clown shoes I had with my other Chacos. They fit my feet perfectly!
My perfect sandal!
The Lowdowns are my perfect sandal. I first tried them on in person at the Chaco tour bus and they were the most comfortable sole I had ever stood in, so I was instantly sold. A year later and they are still so comfortable. I like the risers that the straps attach to; it means no rubbing on my bunions. They are also sleek and flattering on the foot, not chunky and clunky like the classic water sandals. They are super packable - so much lighter than the Zs - and the heel strap is even adjustable, which is not the case with the Zs. I have a pair of the Lowdown slides as well that I wear mostly as house shoes. I plan to take these sandals on a month long trip to Southeast Asia this year (will be onebagging with just a backpack). If the Lowdowns don't work for you, don't let one pair turn you off of the whole brand. Each style has different pros and cons for different feet. I still wear my first pair of Z/Volv Chacos that I've worn for 7 years with great comfort. I tried both the Z/Classic and Z/Cloud sandals a few years ago and they both rubbed and gave me blisters no matter how much I tried to break them in. You just have to try them out and find the style that works for you. That's what's so great about being an REI member - you are able to do that :) I will say that a couple of their newest (2024) Lowdown sandal straps were made with a different material that was softer and thinner and snagged on the buckle. My husband got one of those and had to have his brown straps switched out for a different color in their typical strap material. If you have that issue, try swapping for a different colorway. Also, Chaco has a wonderful repair program, which is one reason they are such a good brand - keeping used products out of the landfill for as long as possible.
