Rated 5 out of 5 by from I may have lucked out really I will start with stating these are my first hiking boot investment boots. I went to the REI in Marlton NJ with my boyfriend, who is a hiker, and tried on every pair they had. The staff at the store was great, we were able to look at the different style and workout which size would be best. I walked around the store itself and used the mini rock display to see if they would stabilize my ankle enough. I tend to easily twist my ankles so it was a big concern when going on a multiple day hike. I work in schools so I am usually on my feet all day, heavy shoes are not an option for me. I feel the weight quickly and will drag through the day. When comparing these with the other boots in stock they felt lighter then most but not so light I was worried about protecting my feet and ankles on the trail. They also didn't make me feel like my feet were magically 4 inches wider. I felt clunky and awkward in the boots with a wider sole, these felt more true to my actual foot size. I'm not sure about other women out there but I know for me when the shoe I'm wearing has made my foot wider then I'm used to I become more clumsy and tend to trip over my own feet. These boots allowed me to feel I could use my regular spacial understanding of where my foot can fit. (if that makes sense) They didn't allow for ankle rolling! At the store I was trying to test how much they would allow me to bend incorrectly at the ankle. I am a pretty bad ankle twister in my everyday walking or running so it is a concern. These boots did allow for range of motion within limits and on the trail saved my ankle quite a few times. Don't be afraid to go a 1/2 size up! I compared them in the store with thick socks and all. I wear an 8- 8 1/2 shoe depending on style and manufacturer. On one foot I had the 8 1/2 on the other the 9. I went with the 9 because it was very secure around the ankle but still allowed for my toes to not feel jammed in and thinking ahead to the natural swelling I was expecting from hiking for miles. On our backpacking trip we hiked through mud, stream crossing, rock crossings, narrow passes (from the rain) and flat paths. The only time I had questionable footing from the boots was over some algae covered rocks at a rushing stream. My feet stayed dry and I wasn't ready to throw them into the fire at the end of the day of hiking. Some of the reviews I read about these boots mention the very little break in time and I feel they are true. I didn't have much time to break them in properly (about a week really) but I wore them 5 out of 7 days before we went on our hike and they formed quickly to my heal and toes. I didn't need any moleskin during the hike and no blisters formed during it either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I had been looking for a light weight hiker for some time and I'm glad I waited it out until I found these. I am not familiar with Anhu and usually wear Keens. These were a partial gift from my boyfriend and mom, and I chipped in too. I hike mixed terrain, hilly areas quite often. I took these boots for a spin yesterday for the first time, fresh out of the box. They required no breaking in at all. They are very light weight and breathable. It got a little warm yesterday and my feet were not sweaty at all. I took them through some mud and they stayed dry. The traction was great. Where my boyfriend was slipping in the mud, I was standing firm. I was specifically looking for a high top hiker for the ankle support which I'm becoming fond of as I get older. These boots were snug all around, not tight and I have wide feet, and I felt very supported in the ankle. I'm very very happy with my purchase and I'll definitely try more Anhu footwear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome NEUTRAL Hiking Boot! I have narrow feet, super high arches and I severely under-pronate (supinate). I had the hardest time finding hiking shoes because everything I tried on had way too much pronation control. Even if I took the insoles out, they were too built up in the midsole and would interfere with my natural gait, causing foot and knee discomfort. I wish hiking shoes were labeled as neutral or stability like running shoes are! These are true neutral shoes, allow for natural movement while still encouraging a very neutral gait (I guess because of their Numentum technology). I imagine that would make them perfect for those of you who use orthotics, too. I miraculously don't under-pronate in these boots and it still provides the stability I need when dealing with rocky terrain. Since my feet are so narrow I added some high-volume inserts for a better fit. Fit true to size, even with the inserts I didn't have to size up like with most hiking boots. I think it's because the upper is so soft it hugs my foot like a moccasin, and prevents my foot from sliding forward at all. Those with wide feet or high-volume orthotics will need to size up 1/2 size. Do note that these are lightweight hikers and not comparable to heavy duty backpacking boots. Also, the blue color is actually purple. Docked one star because the traction could definitely be better. I was willing to compromise that for comfort since I'm not on super technical trails.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not waterproof but comfy These boots are comfortable and have great traction on wet rocks. Unfortunately, they are in no way waterproof. If your foot is partially submerged for more than a few seconds, water enters through the tongue. Thirty-minutes of walking in grass wet with dew, and your feet will be distinctly damp. If you spend any amount of time hiking in rainy conditions the boots squish with every step. Overall, they are great for desert trips but you will need to buy a different pair of boots to hike outside of arid regions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Boot Ever! I wore these boots on a 7 mile hike with 2,000 feet of elevation change almost straight out of the box without a problem (OK....I wore them around the house the day before.) They are incredibly comfortable and light, by far more than any boot I have ever owned. I did go up a size to give myself more room in the toe for long downhill stretches, and adusted the resultant heel lift with a Superfeet Insole (I routinely size up my athletic footwear). I currently use them for dayhikes, and intend to put them on when I carry a light backpack. They are proven waterproof, and clean up easily after muddy conditions, so I think they are good for most of the year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend I haven't worn over the ankle hiking boots in 30 years (think Redwing super stiff leather) and haven't really had a need as most of my walking is on developed/asphalt type paths and city streets. Further, I have very blister-prone feet, it seems like no matter how comfortable a shoe feels I get blisters after a few miles so I have avoided boots thinking they would be even worse. Boy was I wrong, at least where this boot is concerned! They are ridiculously comfortable, and even after hours and miles of wear I have not developed a single blister! I bought these for an upcoming multi-day walking/hiking vacation and have been doing some foothill hiking to try them out - my feet & ankles feel very stable and protected. Even walked around in the creek a couple times, they are completely waterproof. I normally wear a 7 to 7.5 shoe, the smallest in stock was an 8 and I bought it with some trepidation about the large size but turns out it's perfect with the right socks. My favorite combo so far is the Wright Sox Coolmesh ankle sock underneath the SmartWool women's hiker. I also replaced the insoles with my favorite pink Superfeet ones. Now that I have these awesome boots I really feel inspired to continue to try more challenging trails! Highly recommend! PS One of the reasons I bought these, aside from the high ratings, was the great price during the recent Memorial day sale, however if I have to replace them someday I would have no qualms paying the full price, they're totally worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best hiking boot ever I love these boots. If Ahnu can make boots with soft, nearly seamless insides, then why can't all manufacturers do the same? I took these boots straight out of the box onto a 5-day backpacking trip on rocky trails with numerous stream crossings and had no issues with blisters or water infiltration. Awesome product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly as advertised Like any serious boot, these Ahnus need a little breaking in, so I wore them around the house for a few days before going out. The first foray was a moderate climb up a local trail - dirt, not always level, with muddy and gravelly areas. I felt completely stable and in control at all times - and keep in mind I am almost 60. We walked through soaking wet grass, and my feet stayed dry. And my Ahnus are a terrific shade of dark lavender. Hence the "zazzy." I LOVE these boots.
