I bought this at REI on the recommendation of another scoutmaster for my son to take to Philmont. On a train up hike at the A.T., he put it together for the first time and when he tightened the cap it split where the divot was. He never filtered the first drop of water. When he tried to it just shot out of the split. I contacted Sawyer and they responded that physical damage was not covered by the warranty. I expected more for $40 but I am glad it happened here and not in the mountains of New Mexico. I will be changing the packing list recommendations away from this particular product and company. I am very disappointed.
I used this filter on the JMT 2 yrs ago and a number of shorter trips since then. Continues to work great with no filter issues at all and much better than the pump filters which tend to clog easily. I really like that it can be backflushed which I do after each trip though it never has seemed to need it. The squeeze bags are definitely a weak link in the system. All of my friends blew holes in their bags by the end of the JMT. I'm still using the original bag but I'm a little more careful than most. Best to carry a backup bag and don't get too anxious by applying too much pressure. Bags also delaminate with usage. I use mine as both a squeeze system and as a drip system. For the drip system I found adapters that can connect the filter to a Platypus or ordinary water bottle (from the grocery store). I did an online search for "bottle cap tubing adapter" and found the blue adapters that perfectly fit the Sawyer filter and are a close enough fit for the Platypus pouches. They were $1 ea + S&H. I used tubing to connect the adapters. To resolve a couple minor issues at the reservoir end I added a hose gasket for a tighter seal and put 2 small holes in the adapter to release air from the bottle. Water also dribbled and sputtered around the top which I fixed with a short piece of a drinking straw. I'm still looking for a lightweight tubing clamp to cut the flow while changing bottles. Otherwise, this has worked great!
I used on a 4 day backpacking trip on the Superior Hiking Trail, highly recommend. I started out with the Grayl purifier and am beyond grateful that I brought the Sawyer Squeeze as a backup, which ended up being my main water filter, and always will be now. It was easy, just follow the instructions. I would recommend each person having their own if you are worried about time. If not, my mom and I shared the one for the whole trip and we had zero issues.
I tried screwing the filter on the top of a water bottle and it broke within 24 hours of hitting the trail for the first time with it. I was surprised that it was this fragile, I literally just started using it. As a side note, the water reserves it come with are also very difficult to fill up because it has a small mouth and are inflexible. I contacted Sawyer to see if they’d help me out with the product and they told me I’d need to buy a new one. Physical breaks to the filter is not covered under their warranty. If I’m going to have to buy a new filter anyway, I’m switching to the Befree Microfilter. After hearing how many people use Sawyer, I was really disappointed with my experience and that they weren’t willing to stand behind their product after it broke on trip 1.
A group of us were backpacking in Zion and we had gotten to our water source, which was a ground spring. The water was extremely muddy, it looked like chocolate milk. We had the smaller version of this filter but it became clogged half way through the first bag. We thought it was the end of our trip, since we were out of water, and had to hike out to the road and try to get a ride back to town. Luckily, another couple came down to the spring just as we were ready to leave and had this water filter with them. It powered through the muddy water no problem. I was so impressed and thankful, I had to purchase one when we got back.
I was so impressed with this easy to use and super lightweight system. I can literately filter 32 oz in less than 2 minutes. On a recent backpacking outing we had to collect water from various sources like a lake and a very small stream and the filter worked like a charm. My only recommendation is a flexible lip, collapsible silicone bowl to scoop water from shallow places because the narrow mouth and nature of the bags are difficult to fill unless the water is deep enough. I love it, highly recommended!
I have used this filter for all my backpacking trips the last couple of years, its been with me for about 1000 miles, never failed me once. The first trip, a 5 day in the desert, it was very slow, but when I took it on my second trip the flow was great, I guess thats because it needs to dry out fully after the first use or something. The filter is very reliable, I have brought it on my hardest desert trips in Southern Utah and Arizona as well as on winter trips in the Sawtooths and Sierras. I recommend this as the first and foremost filter to use for backpacking. Just keep it in you sleepingbag if weather gets below freezing, and get the big bags.
As far as water treatment goes, this is one of the best options on the market. It's dirt cheap compared to other filters that are twice the price that filter slower and have parts that can break. This filter has none of those problems. I have used it on 10 backpacking trips and have never had any issues with it. I stash it in the mesh pocket on the outside of my pack, fill up the squeeze bag, filter the water into my bottle, and I'm back on the trail really quick. This is essential for me because I like doing high mileage days and I can't wait around for my water to purify or sit there pumping water out of a stream. 11/10. Don't think about it, just buy it. You won't regret it
I bought this before my recent backpacking trip to use as 'on the go' filter so that I don't have to carry a lot of water with me. Filter works fine but bags are really hard and slow to fill means it takes forever to filter water. Someone in my group had brought a plastic cup to fill in the bags because she had encountered the same issue before. I wouldn't have been able use this without her plastic cup. Filter also fits smart water bottle where the bags goes. I will try using the smart water bottle as my dirty water bag and see how it works. I hope bottle will be easier to fill from a running stream than squeeze bag.
Great product. completed its function flawlessly and giardia never got to these bowels!
