i use these boots on deployment in afghanistan. the terrain is extremely rocky and rough and the boots and traction hold up extremely well. took them out of the box for a mission...never got any hotspots. only downside is that they are a little warm. the gortex is great, but not the best for the hotter climates

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

Right out of the box these were the most comfortable thing I'd ever put on my feet and so light weight! I immediately went out on a 7 mile hike with very little elevation change and only a 12lb day pack. I wore them every day and they felt great. Then I went on a 20 mile backpack trip with a 35lb pack. On the first 11 miles there was 2000' elevation gain in a 2 mile section. It was steep, but the boot felt great with no hot spots. On the back side of the mountain going down I ended up with 3 black toes! This boot is really meant for a higher volume foot. If you have higher arches and a narrow foot, this is the boot for you. This boot is really a great hiker, but with the added weight on the downhill I had to change.

REI's excellent return policy and professional employees took care of me. Now I'm happily backpacking with a pair of Montrails that take care of my low volume, narrow foot.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I bought these boots in order to hike my remaining 14ers in Colorado. These seemed best for their light weight (I have very bad knees), waterproofing, durability, and ease of use with crampons. I took them on a 14 mile hike through the mountains the first time I wore them and had only a very tiny blister on my pinky toe. This was not due to the boot, but rather not enough hiking during the winter/late spring months. The size matches my shoe size, however I went with a 1/2 size larger to accomodate swelling and thick socks. I am truly impressed with these boots. If they were a woman, I would marry them and have little baby Asolo's. Although I was at first reluctant to shell out [$], they were worth every penny. I will definitely pick up several pair at the next REI garage sale.

Great boot. Felt great in the store trying them on and had same great feel after 7 mile hike later that afternoon. Only complaint for me is on wet rocks they felt a slippery. It was on an overly used trail near the ocean so.....could have just been the location. Overall, a fantastic boot!

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

First things first, if you have regular feet, these will probably be too narrow for you, make sure you try them on in the store before you buy them online.

I have somewhat narrow feet and an arch issue so I used these with a supportive insole.

These were really good for hiking off trail with ~40 lb backpack, I didn't feel any issues with breaking them in, no blisters or anything on a 10 mile round trip backpacking thru some narrow canyons.

My other light hiking shoes are Merrells (low cut) and a couple of things to consider before buying the asolos imo - make sure it is a good fit, if you are going off trail hopping on tops of rocks and such, these are really great. A more relaxed fit on my Merrells was better for hiking on well marked trails but I really noticed the difference when I was off trail on rocks. The high cut also helps keep you from twisting your feet, not a big issue if you are on a good trail of course.

These did get a little bit hot, but not too bad, I suppose you expect that with backpacking boots.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I bought these boots 24 hours before I hit the AT for a 2-week section hike (I know--not the way you're supposed to do it). They were highly recommended by two different REI stores in my area and I'm so glad I took their recommendation. There was virtually no break-in needed. They were put to the test immediately in the pouring rain in the Smokies and stayed dry. I didn't discover any hot spots. They did produce a few blisters on my heels after the first 50 miles but they remained comfortable, durable, and waterproof the entire trip. I also ran into thru-hikers who had moved 200 miles so far in the same boots and they were equally pleased with them.
These are my first pair of hiking boots, so I have nothing to compare them to. But for what it's worth, I would definitely purchase them again. I'm looking forward to putting several hundred more miles in them.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I have loved other Asolo boots, but I can't begin to describe my disappointment in these boots. Maybe it's my foot size (13).

FIRST WEAR IN THE FIELD:

WAY too hot (hotter than full leather Vasques)

NOT breathable.

NOT waterproof beyond rubber (first step up to the laces and you'll have a soaker, just like I did).

Frayed laces on BOTH boots (seriously, first wear?)

Stinky (and I'm not known for stinky feet)

Will NOT stay tied. Lowest eye fails about every 10-15 minutes, particularly when contouring.

Do not take insoles

Difficult to clean off (get leather).

If you actually WORK in your boots, buy something else. REI should not sell these boots for every day use.

These boots were great while they lasted, less than 2 years. This is my second pair of Asolo's, and will be my last ever. The sole is separating from the rest of the boot. For the money there are better boots out there, I hope I can find them.

These boots would be great if I were missing some toes. The footbox is very small and tight. Also the boots do not break in well. I have worn mine for about 200 miles of backpacking and they have never broke in like merrells I have had. On my way down Mt. Whitney my feet turned into a mess and I never got blisters before. I wish I would have spent my money on some merrells or vasques.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

Great boots, after a 10 mile hike in to break them in, I immediately noticed a hot-spot on my left heel. The hard plastic ankle support ends right at the bottom of the achilles, and in one shoe, had begun to separate and flex into my heel. Terribly painful, insta-blister.
Replaced the insoles, and took them on a 30mile 2-day backpacking trip through the NH Whites. Hardcore hiking. Once my heel was taped up, the boots were awesome. Lightweight; great support, traction, comfort; waterproof up to the ankles. After 30miles with a full pack, your feet are hamburger, no way around it, and these boots didn't leave any particular sore spot or blisters, or any joint pain. Only problem was the heel defect in L foot, but I assume it's exemplary, and not an issue with the shoes at large.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

i owned these boots for about 5 years and they have done great. i've hiked too many miles to count in these boots like dayhikes, weekend backpacking trips, and even a week on the AT and they are still in great shape. i did have to replace the stock insole early on because of a lack of arch support. i experimented with a few different kinds until i found some that worked for me. once i did, i have not had a single problem since. if you take care of them like cleaning them after a trip and re-waterproofing the outside once in a while, i don't see why these boots shouldn't last ten years. mine are half way there and still working great.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

Great boot up until yesterday when one of the eyelets broke. Purchased them in 2007 and used them on several hikes along the AT. Did take a long time to break-in, with a few blisters. Still functions but this eyelet keeps the laces in place over the top of the foot. Would not have mentioned this but my son has the same boot, but a year older, more hikes and his is still intact.

Service & Delivery comments:

When I called Asolo and REI both were helpful with the local store agreeing to replace them for a like model. Could not ask for more.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I have owned these boots for 6 years, and loved them, until I started extended my hikes from 5-6 miles up to 15+ miles. These boots start to KILL my feet after 10 miles. It is because they don't properly "grab" your ankle, and your feet shift forward causing incredible pain on about 40% of the foot. I have tried on other boots, and have found that most every other brand lock my ankle into place. The Asolo brand boots just don't do it, it just took the extended mileage to see the flaw. They are also substantially heavier in weight than comparable boots IMO.

I was in the store and told her what i wanted. A boot that is water proof yet not to heavy. I also want it shorter, but not a shoe. I also want good grip, and durable. Oh and i don't want to break it in forever.

She said "I have the PERFECT boot."
I sat there trying them on and another lady walks by "oh those are the best boots ever!!"

They both were right.

now example of performance

my boots were SOAKED till they slushed from walking in knee high water. so i left them out that night and the next day i took out the inserts and hiked sock less for six miles. I stopped to let my wet feet breath real well every so often.
the hiking while wet squeezed the water out!
the next day they were bone dry!!
slushing wet to dry in 24hrs!

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I bought these boots in preparation for hiking Mt. Whitney on the recommendation of a friend that had recently purchased them for himself. The boots seemed to be well-made and performed well on several practice hikes in Malibu and up Mt. Baldy. After about 3 months of use (and right in the middle of my ascent of Whitney), the toe caps began to detach from the boot. Unbelievable! Having spent nearly $200 on a pair of boots, I figured I'd at least get a season or two out of them...wrong! Also, the break-in time is pretty substantial with these boots as well. Over several months hiking on varied terrain, I routinely got blisters on my heel/achilles regardless of the types and combinations of socks I used. Do yourself a favor and stay away from these cheaply-made boots!! Luckily, REI graciously took them back and I was able to get a different pair that have worked better for me thus far...

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

These are the second pair I've had in 5 years. First pair were wore out of the box up half dome in yosemite. I put several hundred miles on the boots. The second pair were wore out of the box for 70 miles and an asent up and over Mt. Whitney. They only produced one small blister on my toe but performed exceptionally in stream crossing, snow and 0* weather. I would suggest adding superfeet pads to the shoe as the insert that comes with the shoe is worthless. In addition the key to long term use is to prep the shoe with nixwax with annual reapplications and clean the shoe with a stiff brush after each trip. The wax will help to further weatherproof the shoe and the brush will remove micro particles of granite that can break down the shoe, especially between the seams. In short care for the shoe and it will care for you! Hike today...work tomorrow!

this is my second pair of these boots and they are the only thing out there that actually fits my size 14 low volume skis. the last pair is 4 years old and still going, though lacking traction these days and no longer water proof. but they were once and i could stand in a stream with out leaks. my new pair is a better fit for length, but the left boot is not water proof at all. i could wring out my sock after a day hunting in the rain, where the right boot was fine. i plan to swap them for another pair, but wonder about quality control after reading other reviews. they're great if they are up to specs. no break in and really a great mix of flex and support. perfect for my needs- once i get a waterproof pair. i wear them fall, winter and spring in all conditions and for all adventures.

We use these for hard core mountaineering. They work well, are light weight, water proof and have no break in period. I can write a pair of these off in about 5 or 6 climbs, but you can't have everything. They are comfortable, (even on a 20 hour day), so if I have to choose between tearing up my feet or my boots, I choose the boots.(I just look for sales and buy a few pairs) We have used them on winter and swow climbs and they are not very warm, but we can get by going a size larger, with an extra pair of socks and some foot warmers.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I had been hiking for years with just running shoes but after foot surgery my usual pair left me limping. The surgery left me with my right foot 1/2 size smaller and 2 sizes wider than the other foot. Also I was no longer able to bend it very much. I knew it was going to be tough to find a pair of boots that would allow me to hike comfortably. I tried on EVERY hiking boot at REI(props to the shoe sales people at the HB store). I hit Nirvana with the mens Asolo Fugitive. It was the only one that fit me and had a stiff enough sole to support my foot. I wore them for a couple of days at work and did about 5 hikes with them. Finally they were broken in and my happy feet and I spent 4 days hiking all through Zion and Bryce over Labor Day weekend. By the end of the trip both soles were completely coming apart from the uppers. Of course, REI was great and took them back with no problem but now I'm without hiking boots. It could be it was my unusual situation or just an isolated event but the other recent reviews say otherwise. Our local [...]store recently had a used gear sale and there were many Asolos there with the same problem. Maybe they should consider switching to the Vibram sole? I think Asolo makes a great boot but they really need to get a handle on their quality control.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

It felt great to finally have a pair of boots that fit well, comfortable, and did not need a break in period. However, I must say that I had to use my “superfeet” insoles to give me better arch support.

These boots performed very well during my trip to Patagonia where there was quite a bit mud, rocks, stream crossings, and snow in the higher elevation. I had 10 hour days of backpacking but my feet felt dry and happy. Along the rocky parts of the trails, I could have twisted my ankles badly but the boots suported me well. The only time that my feet got really cold was when I was walking in knee deep snow. However, this is to be expected since the boots have only synthetic materials on the top.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

While these boots fit me extremely well, are light weight and have great traction, they have some serious quality issues.

As a Wildlife Technician for the Forest Service here in Arizona, I put a lot of desert miles on my boots--mostly off trail.

I am returning my second pair of these boots (as is my female co-worker for the exact same reasons) in a year for poor construction. The glue on the first pair failed between the sole and toe box on both boots, leaving me to contend with flapping boots in remote canyons--not fun. The stitching on my month-old pair is now failing and the sole is beginning to show signs of pulling away from the toe box again on both boots.

I do not recommend these boots.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

After two, ten mile hikes and a three day backpacking trip I give up. These shoes appear to never break in. They look great on the outside, but it's clear to me Asolo cut corners on the inside. The insoles are cheap and provide no support. And between the inside of the boot and the tough outside, there's almost no padding at all. IMHO, these boots should be avoided.

You may need these a 1/2 to full size larger than your normal foot size. I did.

I did NOT seek assistance of REI staff and purchased the boot the same size as my normal shoe size. I broke them in on a tipped treadmill and the heel cup ate a pretty serious blister into my left heel. Tried a couple more times, but more blisters.

I returned them to REI and then bought a half size larger and they were fine on the treadmill. Just finished almost 20 miles on Mount Washington and Presidential Range and they were fantastic. Great product if sized properly.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

Buy these at least a 1/2 size larger than your foot size. WITHOUT the help of the REI staff, I selected a pair that were my normal shoe size. I tried them on a tipped treadmill and the heel box ate up my left heel right on the Achilles tendon. I tried to break them in a couple more times on the treadmill, but in the end, I had to bring them back.

I next tried a 1/2 size larger and had no further problems on the treadmill. Sizing these seems to more crucial than in other boots I've owned.

I've since put in nearly 20 miles in the Presidential Range of New Hampshire over three days. Boots were very comfortable; no blisters and very little foot fatigue in spite of hard, pointy rock trail surfaces common above treeline. Good traction even on wet rock. Great boot overall. Great for heavy hiking or backpacking.

I have not had these long but I love them so far. A bit uncomfortable at first but after a few hours (5-10) of hiking they broke in nicely. Very water resistant, this feature has not let me down. I wear these with a thin liner and a thick merino sock, no hot spots or blisters even after long days up and down steep terrain. Fair price for a great boot.

i'm an outdoors person who doesn't have specific shoes for a specific terrain; so i use these ones for everything, from walking across grassy fields while pheasant hunting, to hiking up in tahoe, to even wearing them around the house these shoes seem to accomodate my every need. one draw back i have noticed is that the sole tends to pick up gravel sometimes and if u wear them around the house can scratch up the floor so you should be mindful of that; but as an outdoor shoe i think they are a great all terrain and all purpose shoe

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I am a meter reader and wear these shoes everyday. I wore my first pair for 16 months, over 2500 miles walked on them. Only reason I don't wear them any more is because the sole finally gave out, no more traction. They have held up in snow, rain, mud, heat and cold. Coupled with smart wool socks or equivalent my feet never get too hot or cold. Temperature extremes have been from -5F to +105F. The only con is that the original insole wore out after 6 months, but super feet insoles extended the life of the boots considerably. After all the wear and tear I put on these boots the stitching finally started to give way and the boots began to squeak. I am now on my second pair, I can only hope they will last as long.

I took these right out of the box onto a 5000ft vertical/10 mile roundtrip hike in Colorado. Break-in is virtually instant. I would emphasize getting sized properly. Your boot should ideally be snug (bring the socks you use) because after hiking it will loosen a little bit but most importantly, if your foot is moving inside the boot then your asking for trouble, especially on downhill sections. I hiked through streams, over rocks, talus and normal trails. These performed wonderfully. One of the best attributes is they are very light!! That was a big concern of mine going from a low rise hiking shoe to a boot. No worries these feel much lighter than other boots. Unless your carrying very heavy loads then these will hold up for you.

I was hoping this pair would perform and fit like my 4 year old Echos. After 10 miles down the trail I discovered a hot spot but moleskin fixed that immediatly. There was a large knot in the stitching on the tongue that just would'nt flatten down. About 3 days later the sole started to "de-laminate" on both boots next to the toecap. Needless to say I was verey disappointed.

I first read about how these boots work good in all types of terrain and work condition's, thats all great for the average Joe. I'm putting my review for the military guys out there looking for a great boot while moving along the hazardous mountains of Afghanistan. The first pair I bought was just a bit to small so I gave them to a buddy of mine and ordered another pair. While waiting for my boots to come in my buddy had nothing but good words about the boots. Other than taking a bit longer then the average boot to break in they were awesome. My boots just came in the other day and I put them to the test ASAP!!! Straight into the mountains, and let me tell you they work great!!! I feel like they're starting to break in pretty good in just about a 4 days. If you wear a wide then go WIDE!!! and order 1 size up. I highly recommend them.

I would have given these boots 5 stars if it wasn't for two small things. First the traction on the heel of the boot is not that great. Second is they need more width selection. I have a very low volume foot these boots are not as wide as some which is good but I still have to run a superfeet green insole and some heavier weight socks. Has held up to everything I have thrown at it including snow hikes with crampons, pacific northwest spring hikes, and multi day backpacking trips.

After 1 day, I like these. They arrived yesterday & I took them for a 25km walk through some sleet in seriously cold weather. Grip was solid & feet were dry & warm. The toe is great, nice and solid.Sole leaves something to be desired grip-wise on concrete (watch the stairs) but as I don't intend walking too much concrete in them, that doesn't matter. My only real gripe is a cosmetic one (b'coz lets face it, most people like to look pretty good when they do what they do). The red leather flashing on the back makes them look a bit mong but if thats the worst thing you can say about a boot then the boot must be pretty [*] fine.

Service & Delivery comments:

Delivery time good, sales support is excellent.

Well done. REI have won themselves another customer.

I really like the comfort, sizing, and waterproof qualities in this boot. The boot fitter at the REI store in St. Louis was exceptional and did a great job helping me select a boot with the right fit. I bought them with the intent to use them while doing 14ers in Colorado. Having used them now in a variety of backpacks and dayhikes, I am generally pleased. However, there is one serious disadvantage - the soles are incredibly slippery when wet. Unlike Vibram soles on my boots in the past, which were very grippy, the soles on these simply have no wet grip at all. If the soles had any wet traction at all, this would be a great boot. I am concerned about how well they will do in the varied conditions on 14ers. Loss of footing on a peak is not a good thing.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I just got off the Appalachian Trail after starting a week ago due to an injury caused by these boots. Initially the boots felt great, but after hiking consecutive days of 16 miles, 11 miles, and then another 15 miles with a 35 lbs pack in North Georgia, the heel pain became too much to continue. I spent two months breaking in these boots by hiking 3 miles twice a week with a 20 lbs pack in relatively rugged terrain. I thought these boots were going to be the perfect fit for my summer plans of hiking the AT, however now I am going to have to sit out for multiple weeks in order to heal my heel. While I will definitely recommend these boots for day hiking, I am not so sure about a recommendation for backpacking. If you decide to purchase these boots, be sure to test the heel comfort when hiking up steep terrain. I wore liners and wool socks, but still had a significant injury due to the constant hitting of the heel on the back of the boot.

I hike 3-5 times a week for 1-4 hours, climbing 800-3500 feet and back down. I have used these boots for the past 15 months. I love the great lateral stability of these boots and they have saved me more than once from getting a severe sprained ankle. They are light weight, comfortable, durable, and waterproof for my purposes. I like a softer more gripping (aggressive) type sole, and this one is middle of the road for me. I usually use these with a 6 point instep ctrampon and they are a great match. Original insole's are worthless IMHO, but so are most other manufacturers. I have 4 other boots I no longer use as I like these so much.

The first week with these boots, I was very temted to take them back. The sole was rock hard and didn't conform to my foot at all. After seeing this, I wore them for a week or two to work, they look great with a pair of jeans and tshirt by the way. I got them broke in just in time for a 10 day trip to Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. I couldnt have been happier. No blisters, ultimate ankle support, they saved me from a broken ankle hiking down to the Colorado. Good breatability, although they would not be good for cold weather. Bottom line as long as you plan ahead and can take a sometimes painful breakin, a great set of boots

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

So I am a land surveyor in the pacific northwest, and I am on my feet for at least 8 hours a day, and that adds up.

I bought these boots in a 10 as that is what I wear in Nike and my Danskos are a 43... same as a 10. It only took me a day or so to realize, that something wasn't quite right. I purchased the Superfeet Orange insoles, as I was due for some new footbeds, and they reinforced the fact for me, that I actually am going to need a 10.5 in this boot I Think.

So Let me drop in that I also have the Heat Molded Sole brand insoles in a pair of Irish S_tter (by R_d W_ng Sh_es) heavy duty hunting boots. These boots have been like a dream for hundreds of miles as a State Highway Dept. Mapper in the field. I'm not kidding when I say lots of miles... I may be picky by some regards, but I also know what the right fit is supposed to be. I had to play with 3 different pairs of R_d W_ngs, before I found the right pair.

Ok back to Asolos... I went to REI today and played for about 1.5 to 2 hours, trying on only this boot with the orange superfeet insoles. I came in with a regular 10 on my feet which felt mostly fine on my right foot but really squeezed my outer ball/pinky toe area on my left foot. After playing with the 10 Wide, in the color I didn't really want, I opted for the 10.5 in the Gray color. I then immediately went to Wildwood trail in Portland (it is a very average safe trail, only a few roots and rocks in spots) and hiked the entire thing at a brisk pace. I have to say that I'm taking this pair of back as well tomorrow, and I will be adding a significant amount of more money to the initial sale price that I have invested in, for a new style all together.

I won't say that this boot is bad... but it certainly isn't right for me! I have honestly never really had wide feet or odd shoe fitting issues before in my life. Now I will say that the 10.5 does seem to fit better and more comfortable than the 10 did with the factory floppy insoles in them, but I need more support than those insoles.

So my summary... I feel that these boots are uncomfortable and fit narrow and small for me. I must reinforce the fact that I traditionally do not run into width issues in most foot ware. I hope this helps some people out. I will say as a closing positive statement, that they are some of my favorite sporty looking hiking boots, and they are definitely rigid, stable and supportive. Great for a pack on your back, but if you are just doing 5 miles or less on trails, on the weekends than this is way to much boot for you.

Ben

Most reviews said these were best used for approach/day hikes, but I took them up Rainier last summer and they held up great all the way to the summit. Rigid enough for crampons and more comfortable than plastic mountaineering boots. They work great for lower level mountaineering like many routes up Rainier but are not recommended if temperatures are approaching zero fahrenheit or if the climb involves any pitches greater than 60 degrees.

These are very comfortable boots. I used to be plagued with many many foot problems on hikes. That has stopped since I got these. I have wide feet with a narrow heel (I got the wide model of this boot), and these boots fit that description perfectly.

These boots are very durable and sturdy, without feeling restrictive. I have had many different kinds of boots, and these are by far the best. I give 4 stars only because the sole seems slightly narrower than I would like at the heel. The actual heel-cup is great, but I would just like to have a wider sole beneath it. That being said, it's really not a problem, and they are great boots. They are listed as light-hiking boots, but they support me wonderfully with a week's worth of gear on my back (on VERY steep trails in Big Sur/Venatana CA, and rocky/muddy new england trails).

I have arch problems, and so I use green superfeet with these boots, and they work wonderfully. One other point - I ordered my pair of these and they had a couple of quality flaws, but after exchanging them for a new pair, I now have a great pair that I anticipate having for many years of hard use.

My wife and I hiked 5+ miles in these the day after we bought them and had no ill affects (blisters, hot spots, etc.)- she has the women's version. Despite the wet weather we often encounter, our feet always stay dry. An added benefit: these look good with jeans and are comfortable enough to wear around town.

These have been with me on many Southern Indiana/Western Kentucky dayhikes and Boy Scout campouts in all seasons. I've also taken them hiking in the Rockies, Great Smoky Mtns., and Tennessee foothills.

I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

Good boot at this price point. I took them as a back-up for Mt. Whitney's Mountaineer's Route. Used them at lower elevations until I had to put on the plastics. Good downhill braking, good traction, good stability on loose terrain and/or rock hopping on talus. Feet got damp within a couple of hours, but, to be fair, the 'Sierra Cement' was really deep and wet. So far, they seem fairly durable for how much they cost.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I've been wearing these boots back and forth from class to break them in. I have probably put 12 or so miles on them and they seem great. My only argument is that they run small. I usually wear a 13 in everything, and had to go to a 14 in the Asolo, and it is still a little tight on my right foot around the toes. They are a narrow boot, so if you have wide feet you should definitely pick up WIDES if they have them in your size!!! I will be taking these on an AT thru-hike and hoping they will work wonderfully!

This is a terrific boot. I wear a size 12 normally, and an Asolo 12 fits the exact same. I'm a firm believer in orthotics, so I've been using Superfeet Orange's in these since day one. As a kinesiology major, I cannot stress the importance of buying high quality footwear like these. You might not see the impact short run, but the rest of your body will thank you down the road.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

These are the best hiking/backpacking boots I have owned. By best, I mean they have very good stability, they are waterproof and they are still lightweight by comparison to typical full grain boots. I installed Superfeet Green footbeds and used a 2 sock system of heavy Thorlo Wool and Thorlo liners. This gave a snug fit just like it should be.I purchased these about a month before going on a Philmont trek and they required very little breakin. I'm still in awe of the stability for such a comfortable boot. After hiking all day at Philmont my feet still felt good and unlike many others in the crew I did not feel a need to rush to remove my boots. That is a high testament to the comfort and protection that these boots provide. I carried between 50-60 pounds most days depending on food and water needs and I felt as comfortable on rocks and areas with tricky footing as with previous Vasque or Asolo full grain boots. Must be magic!! Also, no blisters at all and this is rare. Every boot I've owned until would find some place to rub. Not these. Now that I've seen what it looks like when it is right I will never go back to traditional boots. I might buy another spare pair in case Asolo screws up and changes their design.I've only got a 100 or so miles on them and after cleaning up they still look new. This in my opinion is one time when newer materials trump the tried and true full grain boot.[...]Great experience. Recommend trying these or any other boot on in a store.

I use this boot for a lot of long day hikes. The boot hugs my foot like a glove. Worn with a good sock they're quite comfortable in my opinion. Good quality.

i've owned 3 pairs of this particular asolo boot, and feel completely loyal to the brand. i can't comment on the accuracy of the sizing, but can say that they feel wider than the boots i'd bought from nike about 10 years ago - i've been wearing exclusively asolo that long. my application is long city walks, day hikes and bike commuting and in that type of use they last about a year. afterward they're still together but not presentable for work and the tread has worn flat.

I live in Wisconsin and bought these boots after xmas, and wore them the next day out hunting in about 15 inches of snow and my feet stayed completely dry. The next day I wore them sledding. Feet still dry. Recently I have wore them hiking in the mud and slush after some January rain. Feet still dry. Break in time was minimal. I am sold on these boots FOREVER!!! I think the only thing they need is a pair of Superfeet or Sole insoles and they will be perfect.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I have weak ankles. My backpack is usually lighter than average for a given trip. I hate wasting time looking for the perfect ford so I don’t get my feet wet. Given these facts, this boot is one of the best boots I’ve worn. It’s lightweight and water resistant at the same time breathing well. I just got back from a trip to the Superstition Wilderness where they received several storms back to back. I’ve never forded so many streams, rivers, creeks than that hike through the Arizona desert. The boots were great. My socks were dry for the first 4 or 5 crossings after splashing through ankle deep water with a pair of gortex pants cinched tightly around the tops of my boots. Water eventually soaked in but it took a while. These were very comfortable to hike in. Stiff enough to provide support while carrying a 35 pound pack for a 4 day trip.

If you hike with a heavy pack, consider getting a heavier boot. As for durability, I’ll let you know when these finally start to fall apart. I’ve had these for about two years and have worn them from the trails of Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, California and Arizona; from jungles to glaciers to deserts – a good all around lightweight backpacking boot.

Used them for 2 summers in Canada canoing. Great at keeping water out up to tops. Had a rough break in with orthotic inserts...do not plan on using them with these boots. Kept my feet warm and dry on long cold days. Only other gripe is that they cannot take the shock of rocks. Prepare to get banged up on a rock hop.

I spend a fair amount in backcountry hikes and also do a lot of hunting. These boots are great! They perform flawlessly, are nice and light, keep your feet dry and toasty and you can wear them all day without hurting your feet. My boots have worn a little bit at the top by the tongue where I scraped the boot against some lava rocks, but lava rocks can tear just about anything to shreds. I would definitely buy these boots again and recommend them to anyone looking for a solid, well performing, all purpose boot.

I bought the boots on a Monday and broke them out Thursday in the first snow storm of the season. Two days later the second storms arrived and I worked in the snow and felt really safe with the great traction. I had no real break in period also. I am really thrilled that they are SO light.

Generally use these boots for day hikes. Have put about 15 miles per week on these boots for three months but still can't break them in. Really found nothing good about them except for a very snug fitting heel. The outter sole is very hard and almost brittle. Most of the sole cushioning comes from the innersole. If you remove the innersole to insert orthotics you have virtually no cushioning or shock absorption and I have suffered stone bruises from just short walks over light gravel.

These fit my feet, which have very narrow heels. I have not found another pair of boots that addresses this issue better. They do wear very quickly, after 20 miles in the Easter Sierras with a backpack I was tempted to return them, but they have lasted me another few hundred miles, and like I said, nothing else fits. I would recommend these to someone with narrow heels, otherwise try something that gets better mileage. Other than the soles, they are very durable.

Finally after two months and several hundred miles they are starting to break in. Good water resistance, warm and stable feeling. Would recommend if you have the time to break them in.

I have wide feet, and for the light-med hiker category, there are not a lot of options for a good fit. This model was available in a 12 Wide, and it feels great with my Med weight woolies on. I wear them 2-3 times a week to work, which means they are on my feet for up to 14 hours, and my feet really do feel good when they come off - unlike other shoes that I am kicking off as soon as I walk right through the door.

Asolo has figured out the human foot!

I traded in my heavy, all leather boots for these. I miss the support that a heavy boot offers, but not the weight. The waterproof material has held up its end of the bargain time and again, and the sole shows very little wear despite almost daily wear both on and off trail.

I've had these for roughly a year and have put approximately 75 trail miles on them outside of the normal daily wear. They feel a 1/2 size small, but that's why I bought them at an [...]Store instead of ordering them on-line. The soles could use a little more padding, but they have held up really well over rocks and roots commonly encountered in the nearby Laurel Mountains. Anyone who has been through Pgh can tell you how wet and ugly the weather can be, so I'll just say that these boots are reasonably warm and very dry, as they should be. My only complaint would be that the laces broke on my first trip. I've replaced them and haven't had any problems since then.

I read most of the reviews and decided that it would be best suited to give my height and weight. I weight 250 plus, and stand just over 6' 1". I wear a size 14 wide. I need a boot with support and a sturdy sole, these boots fit the bill. I hike moderate to hilly terrain basically for fitness. I am a day walker. I just recieved my boots, laced them on without no break in period(yeah, silly) and walked the trailhead at Johnson Ridge Observatory, Mt. St. Helens, Washington. Six miles round trip in the rain, mud, clinder rock and shale. These boot in my opinion held up considerably well! The fit, the comfort, the sole and the ankle support was remarkably good. I couldn't ask for a better fit and feel than these boots offered outside the box. Yeah! their pricey and they should massage your feet while you hike in them, but that's highly unlikely. For my money this is a excellent day hiking boot, period. Also try a good wool blend sock and liner, does wonders.

Bought the Fugitives 2 yrs ago. Have worn them on all kinds of hikes: flat, mountainous, dry, wet, in snow. Also worn them around in winter. I am ready to buy another pair just in case they're discontinued. No durability problems, fit is great (I have narrow feet w/o much of an arch). Try a pair on!

Overall a good boot. Light and stable with decent grip on rocks. Not the warmest thing in the world, but its not really made for that. My feet stay pretty dry and they breathe very well. My feet arent always sweating in them like some other boots. As long as they are used for what they are made for, they are a great boot. I paid full price [$]. I would probably be a little happier if I had gotten some deal. But the gortex is very nice and hey, you get what you pay for.

Great pair of hiking boots. As most Asolo boots do, they have a narrow fit. I have narrow feet, so they fit me great. Just keep that in mind.
Seems a little pricey, but if you do a lot of hiking, it's not too bad. They are long lasting.
I also wear them backpacking (40+lbs) and they are comfortable there too.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I've had these boots for almost 2 years. I've used them on terrain ranging from beach sand, to parts of the Grand Canyon, to scrambling over rocks in the Sierra.

What I like about these boots is that they are very rugged. I get the feeling they'll last me 20 years even with regular use. Well, at least the uppers are very solid. The sole looks like it's showing some signs of wear corresponding to the amount of use they've gotten.

I also like that my feet sweat relatively little with these boots, compared to "heavy" leather boots I've had in the past.

What I dislike about the boots is that they're very uncomfortable. They also don't grip as well as I'd like on rock or snowy surfaces. They also have a very "hard step". After hiking 5 or 6 miles my feet get very tired in these boots. They are a stark contrast to my previous boots, a pair of Merrells, which didn't last as well as I'd like, but which were very comfortable and had an excellent grip on all surfaces.

Worst of all, I've had the issue described by others here, where a part of the upper jabs part of my ankle, which becomes very sore, especially on longer hikes or consecutive days of hiking. I'm not sure if it's the tongue as others mentioned, but at various points on my hikes, different parts of the upper have pressed on different parts of my ankle.

On day hikes I've been able to bear with the discomfort. But on a recent backpacking trip, these boots caused my feet to hurt so badly they hurt for a week after I returned.

I hope to find a boot with the sturdiness and support of the Asolo Fugitive GTX, but with the comfort of my old Merrells.

My brother and his friend both believe these are good boots, so I bought a pair. I have put in about 40 miles over the several trips. While backpacking earlier this summer, had 1,500 ft vertical increase and earned black toe on both feet. For my feet, these boots run small by .5 to 1 full size.

I got these boots on sale [$], so for me, they were a great value. At [$], they may be a little expensive, but they are great boots. The workmanship is good quality and they are quite comfortable. My only negative is that they run pretty narrow. I normally wear a 13, but I ended up going with a 14 to accomodate width.

I have worn many boots but I finally found a pair that I like. The first thing I noticed is its weight - lite!!! This is one of the first item that I look for in a boot. The tongue does not have a lot of padding but I run my lace different so now it is not an issue. I have worn it on several different occasions in the Sierra and I am happy to report that it has good traction. I have two pairs now, one for hiking and backpacking and the other for around town.

Comments about Asolo Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

Bought these for a hiking trip in the Tetons, great boots! Very comfortable for day use, no problems breathing. I even came down wrong on my ankle and would have turned it if not for these boots laced tightly up top. I did get some minor blisters on the back of my heel as another reviewer noted, but I have a tendency to get those anyway so dunno how much the boot contributed. I liked these boots so much I suggested them for my father, who loves them too!

One thing I found, they run narrow at the end and tend to wear on your pinky toe. I bought mine a size large and had no problems.

I need a boot with some extra toe room. I don't normally require a wide size but with this boot I do. Once my foot was it the wide size I felt I found the right size. I also tried a size 1/2 larger but it did not fit as well. After a few day hikes I found one toe, the one next to the little toe, was rubbing. A bandaid fixed that. The boot is very stable and short of being submerged it's pretty water tight. I wouldn't hesitate to use this boot on a long trip with a load.

I bought these boots last year based on [...]recommendations. I had only two weeks to break them in before heading out on a 13 miles hike of Pikes Peak (with 7,000 feet elevation). The boots performed admirably. They were light, sturdy, and provided excellent ankle support. The boot felt slightly loose, but a surgeon's knot and good socks prevented foot slippage and resulted in no blisters after a solid 6 hours of hiking uphills. The tongue is somewhat ridgid, so a good sock is required or else it will cause some rubbing & discomfort on the front of your foot / lower leg.

Took these boots to Yosemite and they can't be beat. They survived many hikes and lots of water and rugged terrain. More importantly, my feet survived without a scratch!! It took a hike or 2 to break them in, they are stiff to start, but soften up all while keeping support. They are by far the lightest boots that I have ever owned and are worth the price for this alone.

If sturdy is what you are lookin for, look no farther. These boots fit my feet perfectly (though I must recognize that the fit of a boot often has more to do with the foot than the boot) but I love them nonetheless.

If your load is heavy and the trail is long, these will go all the way. However, depending on your feet, a lighter boot might be able to take you just as far.

I really like these boots. I have narrow feet. The [...] guy said I also have low volume feet. The Asolo boots usually run slightly narrow, so this is good for me. Throw in a pair of superfeet (green) though, the internal insoles are useless. The tread doesn't look like the gnarly vibram soles I've seen, but we'll see how long it holds up.

The boots are very comfortable and work well on dry and wet day hikes. I do a lot of day hikes to keep in shape for the longer ones. I have done a couple of over-nights with the boots and they were good with 30 -35 lbs. The only issue is the rate at which the soles are wearing. They do not appear to be in it for the long run.

I was impressed with the overall fit of the boot to my feet. It has good ankle support and excellent traction, even on smooth, wet rocks when crossing streams. I noticed that the insole was slightly stiff, but I only really noticed it after 60 miles in the backcountry. Overall, I am pleased with the boot and would recommend it for anyone looking for an all around seasonal hiker that's lightweight, durable, and provides good support and fit.

Overall, this is a good pair of boots. They are sturdy yet flexible, warm but not stifling. I've found that they tend to come untied rather easily with a single knot, but that's an easy fix. These boots do tend to give me blisters right in the center of the balls of my feet, but a one-inch square of moleskin prevents blisters. They are a little heavy to be my everyday footwear, but I know they will last through countless hiking and camping trips. My boots probably have about 100 miles on them, but they still look brand new. These are the boots for people like me: beginning hikers who want a strong, long-lasting pair of boots.

I am an insane hiker - doing some 24+ mile day hikes lately. These shoes have been awesome. They take my abuse and somehow still remain comfortable. I recommend the Wright Socks in summer and add a wool thicker sock in winter. I have 800 miles on these boots now and they are holding up very well. They been all over north Georgia and proved very useful on my recent trip to Yosemite. Half Dome was awesome and these shoes had great grip on the slick granite.
I don't backpack much but they did great on a short weekend trip I took.

These boots (if not all Asolo boots) are rugged, tough, and ready for anything you can throw at them. These are definately tanks! These are great boots that are good from around the town to some extreme hiking. I would just mention that you consider what kind of usage you are looking at in regards to the Gore-tex. The waterproofing seems less breathable in warmer weather. Of course a great compliment to these in any weather are a pair of Smartwool socks!

This is my first pair of backpacking-weight boots that aren't all leather. I really appreciate the light weight, Gore-Tex liner, great traction, and reasonable cost. The downside is that I don't think the ballistic nylon offers quite as much protection as heavy leather on rocky trails or when going cross-country. I don't think that they fit as well as a leather boot can, either, but they do OK with a pair of expedition weight merino wool socks to fill the boot and add a little padding (I'm in between sizes and go up to the next size). The most significant drawback is that the tongue has no padding and can become uncomfortable if the laces are tight. They've served me well for fast hikes on steep and rocky terrain (much better than a pair of low-cut hiking shoes!), but would want to see if I could find anything better before buying another pair.

I had a pair of Asolo boots that I wore for 9 years and worked great. I put around 1500-2000 miles on them. I never got any blisters. So when buying new boot I decided to stick with Asolo. I bought these boots. I wore them around campus and to work to break them in for two months before I started putting them into heavy use. They worked great. The boots were comfortable and sturdy. However when I put a backpack on they changed totally. I got the biggest blisters on my heals that I have ever had. I tried all different sorts of socks and bandaging techniques to fix my heals but the boot just kept eating them up. Finally I had to return them for a pair of boots that I could carry weight with. I also found that they leaked water. Even when waxed they still leaked.
