I bought the bundle pack. The bundle pack came with topo maps and a case for the GPS. This product is great. I tested it at an REI store and decided then and there that this was the product I needed for geocaching and hiking. All the times I've used it, its been spot-on. Easy to use, easy to see when the unit is in direct sunlight and when its dark out too.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Bought this a few years ago and it has been an invaluable purchase ever since. I use it when driving, hiking, and even flying. It gets used almost daily. The default basemap is lacking, so consider an addon map to be part of the cost, adding about an additional 100 bucks to your purchase. Consider accessories like a car mount and power adapter as well.As far as the unit is concerned, it gets great reception both indoors and out. The only time I lose reception are at the bottom of deep canyons, when driving under tunnels, in a building away from windows, or in an airplane more than a few feet away from the window (an external antenna helps here, especially if you aren't sitting in a window seat). The unit is easy to navigate, though reading through the manual will help you pick up its finer features. When I let people play with it, they figure it out very quickly.I love having the ability to track my hiking speed (both overall average and moving average), see where I've gone, figure out where I am relative to a more detailed paper trail map, knowing sunrise and sunset times and even locations for photography, having a barometer measure altitude and elevation gain, a digital compass for getting oriented, a flashlight in a pinch for nighttime, and even a clock for when I don't want a watch tan and don't want to fire up the cell phone.I've had it dunk into a river once or twice and it came out just fine. The waterproofness is great. Unlike a cell phone or digital camera, you won't have to worry about using it in the rain or getting it wet.One thing to look out for is the belt clip. I've broken two or three of those so far, but you can buy replacements online for relatively cheap. When you have it clipped on your side (which I basically never do anymore), if you squat down with the bottom of your unit getting pushed up by your thigh and the quick release button on top of the belt clip quick release button getting pushed down by your stomach (and I'm a thin guy), the GPS unit may pop right out. If your stomach isn't pressing the button, the GPS may literally snap right off the belt clip, breaking the clip in the process. I've had it crash to the ground a few times because of this, one time even start sliding towards the edge of the cliff. I dove after it right before it got to the edge and fell off... Here's a helpful tip: Take the lanyard and loop the GPS through itself around your belt or belt loop as a backup to the belt clip just in case, if you choose to wear it on your hip. I usually just toss it in my pack or have it mounted to my windshield nowadays.About the lanyard, make sure you attach it to the hard plastic shell on the back of the device. DON'T use the soft thin rubbery hole at the top. The lanyard will slowly tear its way through, eventually sending your GPS crashing to the ground when you least expect it. To get the rubber thing fixed as well as replace the plastic shell after any scratches will run you about 70 bucks from Garmin, IIRC.The city navigator map set is very useful for driving. The topo maps aren't that detailed, but it's nice to have the elevation lines displayed, as well as see rivers and water sources. Big rivers are also shown in the city maps, but not with the same detail. On the last hike I did, it was very helpful to see where I was on the topo map and compare it to a trail map we had in a book to make sure we were on the right track. This unit is a nice compromise in size, bulk, screen size, and weight. In terms of battery life, on a full charge of two rechargeable AA's, I'll get about 10 hours. It's always helpful to bring spare batteries in case they die, you want to use the backlight which drains the batteries more quickly, etc.As far as the signal locking is concerned, on a normal cold start, it can take anywhere from 20 to 60 sec to lock onto the satellites and get the position figured out. Maybe 90 sec on a slow lock.On a warm start (off and back on quickly), it'll take about a second, if that, to reconnect.Sometimes it does have trouble locking in initially altogether for many minutes. Not exactly sure why. Also it does sometimes get a little schizophrenic when standing still, particularly in cities. From what I've read, the more sensitive SiRF III chipset can sometimes detect reflected signals off of buildings and whatnot. What this means it that when you're sitting still, sometimes the GPS will think you're moving crazy fast all over the place, like superman on crack. One second you'll be here, another second you'll be 30 yards north, and the next second you'll be 15 yards south. This can mess with your overall moving average, your distance covered, and so on, so keep this in mind. You'll notice this when you look at your tracklog on the screen while sitting still and it looks like a 3 year old went all spastic over one area. :)Quirks aside, I would definitely recommend this unit to others. It's lasted me a long time and I'm so glad I bought it.Yes it does make me somewhat navigationally retarded when driving as I don't really bother remembering where I am as much anymore, but that's not this unit's fault. :p In fact, the thing is so handy that I often wind up becoming the navigator when traveling, even when the friends I'm with are local to the area! Go figure...

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Love the unit. I bought the Topo 24K NW card at the same time, and a wonderful surprise was it then provided "Find" features that exceeded my expectations (gas, food, stores, etc) near wherever I was! The topo information, like contour lines is great. The card makes having the GPS much more pleasurable.
My first unit failed after a week though. I bought it before a trip to the coast, and it was very fun watching it as we went along. We didn't need it to get us to our destination, but boy, was it fun to have along. But after getting to our destination, it lost the ability to acquire satellites and I could never get it to work again. So I exchanged it at REI.
But the part that hurt, was the Topo 24K card is not over write protected. The salesman told me about that, but in my exuberance to download a geocache info, I recalled too late that my card was still in the GPS. That made my GPS do weird things, like a buzzer would come on when I hit the off button, and it would not start up (both requiring removing the batteries to correct).
So I love the GPS and Topo card, but be real sure to remove it before downloading any geocache (or other) information-it will destroy your $100 card.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
The unit is excellent, with a very fast satellite lockon and it is able to hold signal under thick cover. I can even get a few satellites in the middle of my 2 story home occasionally. Setup is fast and intuitive, I had the unit up and running in the REI parking lot and was tracking my route home without cracking the manual. I do advise reading the manual thoroughly, since there are features that are not so easy to intuit, but getting started was a breeze.
Signal during hikes is reliable and battery life is satisfactory for day or single overnight hikes. Longer trips will require keeping the unit off for periods of time or bringing some extra batteries, especially if you have other battery-eaters in your pack. The altimeter is as accurate as a barometric altimeter can be expected to be. I've been afraid to test the water resistance, but I did notice that part of the rubber seal on the left side between the front and back casing pokes out a little at the top. I'm sure this is only an issue with my unit, but it doesn't fill me with waterproof confidence.
Stop by your local electronics store and pick up some screen guards or a protective case - I found some static adhesive overlays in the GPS aisle, but check the cel phone, iPod and PDA sections as well. Gotta keep that screen from getting scratched!
The 60csx is exactly what I was shopping for, which was a navigational aid to confirm my position while being used in conjunction with my map and compass, particularly at night or in whiteouts where no reference points are immediately available.
Garmin deserves 1 (or zero) stars for the way they are handling maps, however. The unit ships with a very basic highway map, so if you want to see anything more than a sea of brown speckled with the occasional blue body of water and crossed by a handful of highways (no surface streets), Garmin forces you to drop an extra hundred bucks for the road maps, and if you want to do any hiking? Ouch, another hundred bucks for a bad 1:100 topo. However, there is hope! A search of internet resources shows a strong GPS community who shares the maps they've constructed for their own GPS units, in many cases far superior to Garmin's products. 1:24 topos, building footprints, national surface streets, and more. Do a quick search for a veritable online GPS file depot and you should be all set ;)

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I use this in conjunction with National Geographic TOPO maps state series, also got from REI. This GPS has without a doubt, been the greatest asset in enabling me to hike places I would never gone before and see things I never would have been able to see before. The best part is buying it from REI. [...] I have now been using this GPS for 5 years. I find mines, indian sites, old trails and load the waypoints from my TOPO software into my GPS and it "guides me right there". All the controls are there with buttons allowing quick access to the information I need.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I used this for a year in Afghanistan and it worked well for the most part. While over there it took quite a beating and held up really well. A week after I got home the back latch broke and now Garmin is asking 89 dollars to fix it. The compass is nearly worthless and it is slow to recalibrate. However, I would buy this unit again.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I'm an avid geocacher, and absolutely love this GPS receiver. It's an incredibly reliable device, very accurate, and easy to use. The only complaint I have is when using it in the dark, the backlight stays on only briefly. Then again, if I had a flashlight handy, that wouldn't be an issue! Have had it for almost 2 years, and have had no issues with it. Recommend it highly!

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I bought this thing two years ago and since then it has alway's either been in my pack or my car. I love this little thing. It incredible easy to use, so much so that it makes navigating fun. Any one can use it, my fiance has a bad sence of direction, but she was easly able to navigate with it on several of her biology data colecting trips. The antena makes for a powerful signal the only time i have ever lost a signal was in heavy tree cover in the Sequioas, but it picks it back up right away.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I purchased this GPS devise to replace an Etrex Legend. The Legend was a good device, but it was outdated. The old unit was good bur didn't have USB connection and didn't have intuitive driving directions- it was over 5 years old. I also like the ability of purchasing a card with another map set on it. I use it mainly for Geocaching but it has come in handy finding places.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Not a big user of GPS for the outdoors as I am kind of old fashioned and generally use maps and have a good sense of direction anyways but for going cross country and especially for hunting off trails this has been a life saver. I dont use it enough to feel super comfortable with it as its not real intuitive so I always have to play with it for a while to refresh my memory on the functions. My only real complaint is the battery life is horrible. 2 AA's are done by the end of the day. Maybe thats normal for a GPS unit but plan on taking a set for each day you use it.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Great product. I have used this on everything from dayhikes to weeklong adventures. I once relied entirely on my Garmin 60csx in the Boundary Waters. About 30 minutes after paddling down the river, we realized we had forgotten the maps in the truck - the truck that was now 30 minutes down the road, driven by our spouses. Even if we had paddled back to the entry point, we still did not have cell service to ask them to come back. So, we proceeded on our trip, and thankfully had the Garmin as backup. 45 miles and 6 days later, we emerged without once getting lost. The Garmin performed flawlessly and survived granite boulders, lots of rain, and plenty of mud. I used the unit continuously for 6 hours the first day, but after that I didn't leave it on for more than 10 minutes at a time. I just turned it on to check bearings and then switched it off. After 6 days I still didn't need to change the lithium AA batteries. I had zero software malfunctions and still have not after a year and a half of use.
Also, it functions well as a road navigation unit, and I would recommend the Garmin windshield suction mount. It can fit on nearly any angle windshield. I leave it in my car 24/7 when not hiking and it has come in handy many times when navigating around the metro where I live.
The attachment clip that comes with the unit is a great idea and also very rugged, as it is made of metal and very tough plastic. I don't have any complaints with this device.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I use the 60CSx with the locating and marking of locations during Search and Rescue mode of my job. I'm able to use one hand to work with it. Waypoints and tracking are easy for anyone to use. My only problem is with the lenght of battery life, which is usual one day of continue work. Sometimes I'm out longer than 24 hrs and I wish that the power supply was a little bit longer.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I own 60csx for over 2 years. I used it for countless hiking trips. Most of the time, it performed very well, picked up signal even in dense forest. Pair it with a trail map, it saved me a few times from getting lost, or lost but be able to trace back. But here are a few thing I wish they can do a better job.
1)the unit comes with a belt clip. But it was not a good, sturdy clip. After over a year of use, the unit is easily to slip out of it. As a result, when we were climbing the Half Dome, my GPS slipped from the clip and dropped down the steep cliff face.
2) the base map has very very old data. Hwy 85 has been around in the Bay Area for more then 15 years, and you don't see that in the base map. Many major streets don't have names in the map. Make the map almost useless.
3) topo US (3.2) is not good. you don't have most of the trails in state and county parks. So it makes hiking in parks other than national parks a guess work, especially on the planning stage. I have to down load park trail maps, and compare the countor lines in Topo US map to plan my route.
4) altitute values are ususally off by a big margin. And this has been shortly after calibrated on Mount Diablo. Once we were using it for Mt. Whitney hike. Two miles from the summit, the altitute data showed a large negative number!
With all that said, after we lost our 60CSX, I'm still buying another one - same 60csx. I research the new models, such as Colorado and Oregon, 60CSX still came on top of other. I just wish my new unit can perform better and hope I will save enough money to buy better maps!

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This unit is great on the trail. I have 3 different GPS units from Garmin: this for the trail, the Forerunner for jogging, the Nuvi 260W for my car. They all do a great job.
Pros:
1.) I'll be honest, I just love the GPS concept. Garmin makes a really solid reliable unit that is OK on the batteries. So, I'm not sure if I'm in love with this product, or just the functionality/information available to me by GPS. After all, GPS isn't complex. The stupid thing only knows where you are in 3D and what time it is - everything else is a simple calculation.
My complaints:
1.) expensive: when you're heading out on the trail you need to have topo maps which will set you back another bunch of $$$.
2.) complicated software: selecting your maps and configuring your 60csx for the trail is much more complicated than it needs to be. Garmin better watch out and do a better job with their interfaces because it doesn't take much to go from making iPhones to making iGPS's. Would Apple ever do such a thing? When you can sell these babies for several hundred $$$ and you see really poor interfaces, and you already make a product (the iPhone) with GPS capability, you better believe Apple is looking at this market.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This unit grabs satellites in a heart beat when warm, and grab satellites in reasonable time when cold. The unit feels good in the hands and I don't have that sense that it will fall freely from my hands by accident. The unit construction appears and feels solid. Love the quad antenna. The menu is easy and and intuitive to figure out. The topo, compared to my my Sportrak Color is accurate as accurate can be on a hand held GPS which is a plus. Battery life is very good but it does not take lithium which sucks but can't have everything. The one negative is that I do not trust the compass. It appears to be of between 5 to 10 degrees by my judgment. I tried all four settings and compared it to my Brunton 8099 even with declination setup for 14.5 degrees. I would use it for bearing direction but will still refer to my compass and topo before making the next direction change.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This unit is amazing. Acquires signal quickly and is extremely accurate. It will even get a signal and show your position (accurately) on screen from inside a single story house! I have never had a problem getting a full signal under tree cover or anywhere else that you hear cause problems for other units. The screen is bright, easy to read day or night, and the controls are great and make this unit easy to operate and use. Battery life is also amazingly long. I purchased this one to replace an old Magellan Meridian gold unit and I am so glad that I did!

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This is the best handheld GPS on the market. I have friends/hiking-partners who use other models of GPS units, including the Garmin eTrex series and the (more expensive) Garmin Colorado series; and there have been many occasions when I have gotten reliable satellite reception and they have not been able to acquire a signal. The antenna on this unit sets it apart from all other handheld GPS units.
Additionally, the screen is large and easily readable. The buttons are intuitive, and easy to operate with one hand. The owner's manual isn't the best, but I was able to figure things out pretty easily. I get over 20 hours of battery life, which is better than my friends/hiking-partners get on their other models.
One minor gripe: The unit accepts 2 GB microSD cards but can only read up to 1 GB of map data off of a card. This is frustrating because the computer software will let you transfer more map data to the card than the unit can read. A bit of a rude awakening when you realize maps that you thought you had are missing. But this is easily remedied by only putting up to 1 GB of map data on each microSD card.
All in all an exceptional GPS that beats the more expensive Garmin Colorado series where it counts.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I love this GPS, I wouldn't go anywhere in my car or hiking without it. I have the TOPO 2008 and US city 2009 installed on it for the state Washington and its almost perfect. What is great is the ability to redirect and calculate how to get to your destination when you took the wrong exit or turn. I haven't had any problems picking up GPS signal outdoors what so ever. I even tracked my hike and saved it for future use when the trail is covered with snow for snow shoeing. Overall, when equipped with the maps and topo and a nice 1GB or 2GB microSD this is a lifesaver. Literally.

Its an Awesome GPS. Picked mine up at a garage sale. Doesn't have a 1:24 topographic map but it still works great. Really Straight forward controls. Also, it picks up a signal really quickly and anywhere (except in a plane).

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
a bit of a review but also a comparison to the Legend HCx
I got this 60CSx for the bigger screen compared to my <1yr old Legend HCx. I worried about getting a unit that's actually older than the current legend and i was partly right. specifically, i was worried that the highly rated "sirfstar" based receiver in the 60csx isn't as good as the high sensitivity chip in newer "H" series units like the Legend HCx i had. the 60csx is about 2+ years older, btw.
60CSx
PROS
-screen is larger
-does get a good signal
-good battery life even with the compass/altimeter
CONS
-is clearly NOT as fast as the newer H i had
-map drawing is definitely slower than in the newer Legend (slower processor?)
-it is bulky, i would not want to carry this in my shorts pocket in the summer
for build construction, the Legend HCx also seems to be tougher with the all rubberized back, all solid metal rear cover, better cover/seal for the USB port. For me, the ONLY thing i gained by getting the 60CSx is the larger screen. I'm beginning to think I took a step backwards and paid more for a lesser unit.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Got into geocaching through a friend, who has an eTrex Vista C. That was my introduction and I was ready to purchase one. Then, I found a sweetheart of a deal on the 60CSx, which made my obsession even greater.
Before going into detail, I want to say you should buy for features. The accuracy on this unit is better than the eTrex, but it still is not spot on. If you have all of the features you want in a cheaper unit, then do not feel slighted with spending less.
Having said that, here are my personal feelings of why one should buy the 60CSX over an eTrex.
1. More buttons. Sounds cheesy, but dedicated find, menu and page buttons are worth a mint.
2. Focused menus. The menu button takes you to context sensitive menus that relate to the page you are on.
3. Route on unit. This only works with additional maps (City Navigator NT North America for me), which come at an extra cost. I am still only marginally impressed with the highway view, although it is nice looking. You can route fairly easily with the software (on your PC) with the eTrex, but this is choose and run with it.
4. Bigger screen. Not much, but this is sweet.
5. Nicer colors. This is also a cheesy reason, but the unit sure looks good when you are tracking.
6. Better geocache screen. More info, although one of the units with the full information would be nicer. But I did not have the cash for one of those units.
7. Ability to quickly mark a location, along with an averaging feature.
8. WAAS/EGNOS. This sounds excellent, but it is only marginally better, as the eTrex is fairly accurate for a unit without GPS enhancement.
I initially "borrowed" a friends MetroGuide maps for the unit and tried to route. I was completely underwhelmed. Then I used the City Navigator NT and I am thoroughly impressed. With the right maps, I can see this unit getting a lot of use as I go from city to city. The only reason to buy an in car unit is if I want it to talk to me.
Going to go out geocaching tomorrow and see if I am still loving the experience. :-)

Try the bicycle mount; works great!

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I use this GPS primarily while cycling, and in conjunction with the city map package. My review of the software would be less stellar -- but the unit itself is rock solid, acquires satellites at an amazing rate and in conditions where it doesn't seem possible, goes for weeks on two rechargable AA batteries, and is easy to read on the handlebar mount in any weather or light conditions. The fact that it's waterproof means I don't have to worry about it while I'm out in the frequent northwest rain, too!
The ability to store tracks for the cycling trails I ride most frequently is key. I love being able to swap quickly between the map display so I know where my turns are coming up and the trip display so I know whether I'm exceeding the speed limit on the trail.
I went with the 60CSx instead of a cycling-specific GPS because I wanted the features that this also affords me when hiking. In conjunction with the topo maps, it is just as indispensible in backcountry. The ability to put the topo maps on a separate card saves me lots of idle computer time transferring data to the unit.
I ride and hike with several other owners of the 60CS and 60CSx and not one of us has ever considered another unit.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
After spending nearly [$] for the product I find that I have to spend another [$] to have the streets around my home in the map. All of my routes created with my prior garmin SW & GPS are worthless. The find feature is WORTHLESS unless you already know where you are going(example for PDX users, 13 miles from my current location and it CAN'T find 82nd Ave). If I do spend [$] for more maps, I would then have to spend even more if I wanted to put those maps in another GPS. Only compatible with Garmin maps, so if you are going somewhere they want recognize there is NOTHING for you until GARMIN decides it is worth looking there. My old eTrex came with, and supported more maps for a whole lot less $$$$.Manual doesn't match screens on device, not all features documented.Maps are inaccurate. Can NOT stop logging.Controls are awkward (two buttons to turn on backlight, requiring change of hand position for each one).Support site hasn't been up for 6 days.I intend to put the PO$ back in the box, and find a useful GPS

I loaded the US streets/ cities onto a 2GB micro SD and drove from North Carolina to Seattle. I had no Idea where I was and the Garmin 60 CSX told me exactly where to go, cruisin at 65 MPH it would tell me to stay to the left on the Freeway so i could branch off to the left for the next freeway. there is no stopping to read paper maps with Garmin. I'm now downloading the 24 K Topo for hiking.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Excellent unit! Right out of the box I took the unit on a 5 mile hike. Setting way points along the way. Even did a little back tracking to see how the unit worked. Awesome, did NOT even need to view the display with my glasses on. Which was a life saver. And color was great at night and in daylight! Once at home, loaded the map source CD and uploaded my recent trek. Bingo was able to view, but not print. Checked for updates and whoa, it uploaded new s/w and was able to print and do many other functions. Then I checked for s/w updates on my unit, and bingo! New s/w uploaded to the unit. Next, went on a 8 mile trek and loaded the trek onto map source with a breeze. Was able to view time to way point, elevation, etc. This is my main use as I like to train boy scouts. This will show their (hiking) improvements over time. Although my main use for this unit is backpacking, this unit simply rocks. I even tried to loose satellite reception in a heavily wooded section with dense fog/rain. No way, this puppy kept on pulling in signals. The compass portion works great, along with all the other features. This unit excels in the outdoors environment! I spoke with a Garmin rep and he advises that if you procure a 2 gb micro card, and load the USA topo and road atlas into the unit, all of the features of the unit features come to life. Overall, well worth the expense!

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Great tool for the outdoors and great for getting there. With a 512 MB chip it will hold most to the US street maps and Topo maps. This unit replaced my older GPS 60C and I miss the alarm clock the old unit had. But it is much better in every other way. Much faster at getting a lock on your location.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Well, I guess it's pretty obvious that the consensus of opinion is that this is a pretty great GPS unit. I just wanted to add my 2 cents to this chorus of kudos.I've owned 3 other GPS units (plus the Magellan I used in the Army) and I was an "early adopter" of this technology. This unit, the Garmin GPS Map 60Csx is the first unit that simply worked just as it is supposed to.No more wasting time searching for satellites, no more losing signal as soon as I am in a forest or near a building, no more "jumping", no more changing out batteries in ridiculously short durations and then losing all my data/position.This unit uses this new SiRF technology which seems infinitely more sensitive than previous models (and any other brands). It locks satellites quickly like nobody's business, even indoors, even in a car, even in the middle of a thick Redwood forest. Under average use, I am getting about 22 to 24 hours of operation from a couple of AA batteries. I don't use the backlight much, and most of the time, I am geo-caching (marking and finding waypoints). Sometimes I am traveling by road and use it for directions. BTW, I consider the use of regular, easily obtainable, easily replaceable AA batteries as a big plus. I hate depending on unreliable rechargeables (internal or not), or strange proprietary batteries that are hard to find or inconvenient to re-charge.I won't waste your time talking about all the myriad features of this GPS unit, but I'll just say that it does everything that a GPS should and does it well. For geo-caching, it is perfect. I have been accurately directed to within 1 ft of a cache! I think the nice colour screen is easy to read, and with a power cord, can be nicely backlit for car driving directions. Also, I think the menus are pretty intuitive and easy to navigate. The included software is easy to install and also very easy to use. If I had to mention some "cons", I'd say that for the price you are paying for this unit, they could have thrown in some better maps. Instead, you must pay an additional [$]or so to get some decent/detailed maps, plus you need to get a larger memory card to be able to fit a reasonable amount of data in. Actually, if you do not need (or if you plan not to use) most of the special features and want to save some money, there are a couple of other very nice GPS models (also with this great SiRF technology) that are also sold [...]. I give this product my highest recommendation. If you have the means, this is the GPS unit to get as far as high performance. I am very happy with this unit.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
The Garmin 60csx is an excellent unit. It is a compact unit with amazing features. The best thing about this unit is it uses the SiRF III chipset which allows the unit to give you readings under dense overhead or in the city with tall buildings. It even gives me readings inside my house which my other gps units do not.
The trip routing feature works well too. Even though it does not give you voice directions, while in Florida and not knowing where I was going, it guided me to the parking lot at Universal Studios!! While riding my motorcycle, I have used this unit to map out trails even in dense forest.
If you use the unit to travel, it is good to have the Garmin MapSource Software. It allows you to download more detailed street level maps and points of interest. The software is a little harder to use when entering addresses (you have to enter the street number, find the street name in a separate box), it is easy to explore the city you may travel through or going to. Also if you have this MapSource Software, you can download your waypoints and tracks to your computer. You can then view and manage your waypoints and tracks and re-load them back to the C60CSX.
Garmin out did themselves on the C60CSX. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for an all around GPS with great accuracy.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I have used this GPS for numerous outdoor activities as well as travelling in the car. I have tested its durability in several accidental ways and it has definitely stood up to the challenge (it is waterproof). I am an environmental scientist and I have also used my Garmin in the field beside the Trimble GeoXT (survey level GPS). In comparison, the 60CSx is still very accurate and very reliable for having satellites. Oh yeah, the expandable memory, for [$] a 2G microSD can store all the road maps for the US and Canada.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I use my GPS to find work addresses, when I am mountain biking & when on vacation like Yellowstone. I am never lost and I do not have to ask for directions. This kills my wife! I also bought a unit for my son for high school graduation. He loves it and is finding his way around San Luis Obispo just fine.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I use the product on the road and in the woods. Garmin was smart to include this ability to accept maps for both uses. While it's not the best for roads (turn-by-turn directions), it gets the job done.
I love the fact that it's waterproof. I also appreciate it's quick satellite locater and the better signal even under "tree cover."
Even though basically all GPS devices are like this, I wish GPS companies would include more detailed basemaps. But, of course, GPS companies want more money and sell their better maps separately.
The other downside of the 60CSx is it's non Mac compatibility. Garmin has been slow in fixing this problem. They offer a solution, but it still requires a PC. They do, however, offer the extended maps already loaded on mini SD cards, so all is not lost. (Firmware updates do work for Macs, though. Just not Map software) I haven't tried map software with parallels or boot camp (and I haven't read about it working for anyone else yet) so that is a gamble.
If you want to upgrade maps using software and you run a Mac, be wary. If you are willing to pay a few more dollars and buy the pre-loaded maps or have a PC to use, there is no problem.
Apart from maps and Mac compatibility, the product is great and I don't regret my purchase in the least.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Great unit! Grabs satellites fast. Easy to use. Main use is off trail backpacking, but just as usefull in the car. It uses standard batteries so extended trips are not a problem (recharging),just bring spare AAs. It made an off trail day hike a walk in the park...no second guessing or back tracking.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
i use this unit primarily hiking but also while driving
it always finds and keeps the GPS signal (usually even inside buildings)
the electronic compass is quite nice(though i still carry my real compass)
the battery life is a little short if you tend to always be fiddling with it, switching screens etc
fun added plus-there are also 4 games included on it, 3 that use your physical location to play the game(a maze you need to move through, a virtual hunt) and one puzzle game that you can play without a signal

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
In the car or in the back country this one does it all. Frontside buttons make it a snap to learn and easier to operate in a mounting bracket. It has saved me hours of being lost in the middle of the night in an unfamiliar city more than once. Also it got me off a mountain quickly after spraining an ankle.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Too difficult to setup. All the buttons are the same and hard to see in the dark. No way to type letters. Menu is complex and does very little. Expected more for the cost. This is just a really heavy and expensive compass.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
very handy tool, only took a few hours to get it all down, very accurate in bad weather and narrow canyons. I had the thing in a slot caynon in cloud cover and it was still accurate within 15' and found the satelites fairly quck.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Decent to excellent software available. Fun. Tech support easily reached by phone to help you understand the manual ... Once you get the hang of the controls, their logic follows throughout all the menus. We lost our only copy of topo map on a Grand Canyon backpacking trip and had to rely on this unit and it allowed us to follow the right path at confusing forks. A little heavy for the pack. Lithium batteries provide long service. Has the same limits in forests and canyons like all the others.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I've used many different GPSs through the years, and this is one of the best consumer models I've dealt with yet. Paired with the Garmin US TOPO CD that provides detailed maps, it can't be beat. It has an intuitive and easy user interface, and you can use this out of the box without having to read the manual. The only thing that would make it better is if it came with the aforementioned mapping CD.

I work in wilderness therapy and use this unit on a daily basis. During my off time I take it with me biking, canyoneering, and hiking. I can't believe how accurate it is. I have even managed to pick up a signal in slot canyons.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Wonderful multi-function GPS. It's perfect for trail use (1 set of AA's usually lasts me for 3-4 multi-day hikes) and with the addition of the City Navigator software, you get GPS directions for your car! Can't recommend this product enough, especially for hikers that do business travel in their 'normal lives'.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Excellent performer. Best antenna I have seen. Easily tracks sats under heavy foliage and light to moderate construction. Expandable memory, easy to upload/download info. Menu and controls could be easier. I use it in international disaster response and have to trust my life with it.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Great for trail runners looking for feedback on pace and distance traveled. The best product I have found for this information. Keeps the GPS signal in heavy foliage better than any of the GPS watches designed for running. The only downside is its size. You need a large pocket, fanny pack or hydration pack to carry it in.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Have used it for everything from driving directions while traveling, summiting Mt. Shasta, geocaching, uploading to motionbased for bike rides, etc. Performs pretty flawlessly in just about every circumstance, it's tough to find complaints. Some of the controls are a little more complicated than they need to be and you need to flip back and forth between pages to much. But that's more a nit than anything. I've used both lithium rechargables as well as alkaline (remember to change the setting when you do switch or else battery life is very poor).

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This product truly exceeds expectations. I bought mine 2 months ago and use it primarily on my bike (I have ridden almost a 1000 miles with it), several long car rides and on vacation in a rental car, while hiking the Applachin trail and flying cross country. In every instance it has worked great. It has a tremendous amount of flexibility on how it is setup/customized. It has more information then most auto only GPS units or built in GPS units. It is very accurate. The battery life is pretty close to what they represent at almost 20 hours. Garmin customer service is EXCELLENT and it does take a few calls to help learn how to use it (tracks, routes, waypoints etc). The unit has already saved me from a speeding ticket, when I was able to show the officer my max speed was far less then the speed then he said he clocked me at. While the unit is strong, I did crack the screen when I dropped it on a rock while hiking. Overall, this unit far exceeded my expecations in many ways and thus I highly recommend it.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This is the best GPS I have every used in the ten years I have been using GPS technology. The 60CSX is a very rugged unit. You need not worry about rain, dust or snow with this unit!!!! Programming is simple. Use is very straight forward!!!! If you want a great GPS this is the unit!!!!
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This is an easy to use method of ensuring you find your way home from your hike. Sensitivity (even in wooded terrain)is great. Graphics and menus are clear. Quick to lock on. With optional topo map sets I'm always being asked "exactly where are we" on hikes. Only complaint-unit won't work with lithium cells. bummer. Having used a number of cheaper units I say it's worth the price, yet feel that for the money it should come with the topo software.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
In general, I am quite pleased with this device. It performs, as advertised and has much better reception than any previous GPS I have owned. The newer chipset is what really set this device above the others (although this set is now becoming more of a standard in newer devices.) My only quibbles are a suboptimal screen brightness when sitting on the dashboard of your car and a few "oops" when the device has led me astray. Few and far between, these have been when using the auto-routing software. For example, the device sent me to the employee entrance at Dorval Airport in Canada [few miles from the more appropriate travellers entrance). I have never had problems when hiking or kayaking. The feature set is great and it is built to withstand quite a bit. Still, when using it in the car, one should look to this as a reasonable "crossover device". If you are looking primarily for an automobile - based GPS, you should consider one more dedicated to this purpose.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I was first introduced to GPS when I purchased a Garmin unit for my car. I don't know how I got along without one now that I've used it. I decided to apply GPS to my hiking and backpacking activities so I took the GPS course and outing [...] where they use the Garmin 60CSx. I liked the unit so much I purchased my own. Now that I've used it I feel the same way I do with my car unit, how did I ever get along without it? The 60CSx is very easy to use, doesn't take up much space, or add much weight. It is not a replacement for a compass or map but is a great tool for verifying your location. I find it most useful for pre-planning a trip. Used with National Geographic TOPO software and the Garmin mapping software, I am able to pre-establish routs and waypoints, determing elevation and difficulty, and set boundries. I also print a hardcopy of the map. Using the Garmin 60CSx makes me feel much more confident that I wont get lost. I also know I could find my way out if I ever deveate from my pre-planned course and do get lost. I look forward to using the 60GSx for snowshoeing this winter.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This GPS is one of the best I have used. I do alot of hiking and hunting in the back country and every time I head out I know I wont get lost. My wife and I started geocaching and this gps has not failed us. Great battery life and screen is easy to see and read. Only bad thing is the price of the map software. But still with the new 2008 streets and 2008 topo software you can't go wrong well worth the price. I give this product two thumbs up all the way.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I love this thing. I'd get TOPO software with it though...and that's a godd [$] extra, but very well worth it. I'm used to buying electronic equipment like this and figuring it out on my won without the directions, but this one was a little more complicated, but if you play with it for a little while, it's a breeze. It's expensive...but it'll pay you back.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This unit has all the bells and whistles one could want in a personal GPS unit, however none of those are its strong points. The best part about this unit is its ability to maintain locks on satelites despite losing all sight of the sky. I frequent the western side of Olympic National Park where you are lucky to see the sky yourself, let alone have enough of a view to maintain a lock on a satelite. Somehow this unit can do it and do it well. Once it gets locks, it rarely loses them. I have even taken it inside my locl grocery store on accident and found that it maintain all of its locks (it did lose a large amount of accuracy, but it still maintained them). I tried a variety of other units in the field and none of them performed even half as well as this one.
Also I have owned the unit for over a year and a half and still have no complaints. The bottom line, you truly do get what you pay for here.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
What a great little toy. Only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that it wasn't pre-loaded with either Topo or Street navigation software. I haven't bought the additional software yet, but loving the ability to take it everywhere I want in my back pocket. Also have a Forerunner 201 that takes forever to acquire satellites and gets lost when in the car. The 60 CSx works great just tossing it in the center console of the car and taking off.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I do Emergency Services work with CAP and routinely go into unknown territory and rough terrain. This GPS has excellent signal strength, has lots of flexibility, and can store many waypoints which is a great help for me. This GPS was definately worth the investment. No more depending on a map and compass for me!
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Man I love this unit. I find myself looking for excuses to drive around town now just to play with it. Make sure to add City Nav 2008 for driving instructions and POI. Once added it's the ultimate for GeoCaching and you'll never get lost in your car again. Can't wait to see what Garmin does next!

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
My old Garmin 60cs was 4 years old, never a problem, except in dense trees lost signal. The 60csx addressed the reception issue. The 60cs and 60csx have the same menu so there was no learning curve. We have gone off trail with this unit and never worried about getting lost. GREAT UNIT!
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
enjoy the easy front panel buttons especially the mark and find buttons. The easy way to page forward or use quit to page in reverse. It is quick to get results w/o continually dropping through menus. The display is easy to read and its rugged construction lets me take it even off road cycling
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I have yet to have trouble getting a good signal regardless of terain. Water resistance is great and expands the use of the product.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This is the best hand held GPS I've owned. And generally a great all in one but its a little clumsy and inadequate for car navigation. But its well-built, reliable and takes alot of punishment.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Great for my adventures in the mountains. Never had a problem and it has been guiding me trough thick fog, blizzards and heavy rain or whatever weather condition you can name.
I also using it for my training, very cool to look at the trail-profile etc. and its accurate for measuring distance/time/speed.
A great toy!
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
After having an Etrex Legend, I was quite dissapointed with its reception in tree cover. The GPSMap60csx is a huge improvement. It will even track my movement indoors. I have never had a reception issue under tree cover or in the car. I use this in the car to navigate, on the mountain and for speed and distance measurements. I do wish you could auto-route with the MetroGuide maps though. For auto-routing you have to get the City Navigator maps.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I have a friend with an older eTrex model and I live in the Pacific Northwest, which means just about everywhere you hike there are TREES. His GPS unit mostly doesn't get strong enough of a signal to actually acquire keep the satellites in view. My 60CSx has no problem at all as long as I have previously acquired the signal in an area that is very heavily wooded with cliffs. (In that scenario it can search forever and not get a signal)The map software is terribly basic and reminds me of old Windows version 3 software. It's functional, but looks seriously dated. The memory card slot is a distinct advantage. Memory cards are cheap anyway these days. When I got my unit, I had to pay about $80 for a 1GB memory card and on that card I have managed to fit pretty much all the west coast of the US with the topographic maps. So far, this have covered 100% of my hiking and backpacking activities.I have found that one set of batteries lasts for about 2-3 days of use. So whenever I go backpacking for an overnight trip, I put new batteries in it. I tried Lithium batteries in it once, and it would boot up and then freeze completely. I recommend staying with Alkaline.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
easier to use than i thought it would be, great aid and confidence builder for longer hikes and boat outings
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This is by far the best GPS I have seen for hiking. I especially like the "miles traveled" feature for when I hike off trail. Many of the folks on my Search and Rescue team have switched to this for the superior ability to get signal in remote areas.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I could not believe that a screen could be this visible in daylight without using the backlight. The graphics are crisp and easy to read. The control buttons are easy enough to press while wearing gloves on a motorcycle. This is one of those products that I wanted and has now become an essential tool replacing bulky paper maps.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
The only negative about this handheld GPS unit is the price. However, you get exactly what you pay for. I have had other GPS units, but none are more accurate, or have long battery life like the Map60 CSX. If you geocache, this is the unit for you. You can download coordinates directly from the site to the Map60CSX. you cannot do that with other makes.
The additional map software is also expensive. I would recommend the the TOPO software as opposed to the street software.
If you want the best and can afford it, this is the unit for you.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This is a GREAT GPS. Pretty much always finds satellites, it's rugged, and portable enough to fit in my hand while trail running. Down sides: software (but they are improving). I ended up buying the software for US street navigation, topography, and worldmap. They are ok but I can easily think of many improvements. In addition to making them more affordable, the content and interface could be tremendously improved. For the US navigation, directions are not always clear, but eventually and with some experience, you can figure out what's trying to get you to do. In the upside, it does recalculate a new route very quickly after a wrong turn. There is a setting for vehicle type and different routes are suggested for auto, bike, or pedestrian paths. Also, good international maps exist only for Europe, NZ, and Australia. I'm hoping for releases for middle eastern and Asian countries where one is more likely to get lost. As to the topo, more detail on the contours would be desirable (currently in 150ft increments). You can preview the software on the Garmin website before purchasing. Also missing: a speaker for street navigation, so you can keep your eyes on the road.
Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This is the best hiking GPS money can buy you! Since this device is overflowing with features, it takes some time to personalize and get used to everything. This unit was not intended for auto navigation but it does a pretty good job at it. The battery life is the only bad thing, but what can you expect from something that has so many features? I would use some heavy-duty batteries. If you will use it solely for auto nav, then I would look at the car models. But, if you are going to use it for hiking and other outdoor activities (its waterproof!), and some auto navigation, then this is the unit for you!

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Bought recently to replace an aging Magellan. The screen is very nice. Really quick start-up. As commented earlier, I find the menus a bit less intuitive than the Magellan, but gets easier with experience. Excellent battery life -- got nearly two days to a set of batteries over a recent 4 day backpacking trip. My Magellan would have used at least 4 batteries a day even with the backlight turned off. I use this on my fishing boat as well so purchased the marine mount. Really inferior to the Magellan mount. Need to connect the cable to the back of the unit bofore attaching to the mount and it's not easy to position the unit in the mount once the cable is there. I like the way the Magellan unit simply clipped into the mount and the power was automatically connected - far more user friendly. Having said that, this is a far superior performer to the Magellan. No regrets.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
Rarely does a consumer product exceed all expectations and does not become obsolete in a short span. The 60CSx (with mandatory topo and auto software) does exactly as advertised. Whether hiking the Wave on the Utah/Arizona border or driving in an unfamiliar city needing the closest gas station or restaurant, this product does it all. This is my third Garmin, replacing a 60CS and I absolutely recommend it.
Weekdays it serves me in business finding addresses. Weekends, hiking in Southern Utah or just gunkholing in the San Juan Islands, the 60CSx does it all.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I have been using the 60CSx for cycling and it keeps good stats, but nothing that an ordinary cycling computer couldn't do. It also has no capability to cadence, which is a drawback for me. The directions are decent, although once you get off course they tend to be less than spectacular (keep in mind that you need to buy City Navigator for [$]in addition to the unit).I have also had some problems when the bike attachment broke when riding on the lovely pothole covered roads of the Boston area. This caused my GPS to fly and have some issues. [...]Overall, it's a decent unit but it's not what I really wanted it to be. I wish I had just bought a good cycling computer with cadence. Unless you do a lot of rides on your own and need turn by turn directions, then it really isn't worth it. And don't forget your map because looking at the big picture on the unit is nearly impossible.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This is my first GPS receiver. I waited until Garmin had a unit that was good for both driving and hiking and had expandable memory. This is it! This GPS makes planning trips so much easier. It gives us turn-by-turn instructions to our destination, and is great for hiking and geocaching. There are a lot of neat extras like sunrise and sunset information, a calendar, altimeter. I would buy this unit again with no reservations.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
This unit is a perfect companion when hiking in the deep back country. Of course, having backup navigation aids and having the ability to use them is critical (compass, paper topo maps), but the piece of mind offered is wonderful.
Its antenna is amazing, I have been able to get signal in my house, and in the deepest woods. Not something I could say with previous GPS units.
The battery life is pretty good, provided I don't change screens a lot and keep the back light off.
I can clearly read the display in even the brightest sun.
I added the optional protective case, which does make operating the buttons a bit harder, but the GPS doesn't have a scratch due to the extra protection (and I have dropped it a number of times).
I have found the turn-by-turn navigation to be pretty good. Adding multiple way points into the software, makes it much better.
Overall, I love my GPS and would recommend it to anyone!

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
I work as an archeology field tech which entails using a GPS almost constantly all day. I ordered the 60CXs about a year ago and have put it through its paces. For me personally the attraction is the sensitive receiver, allowing me to use it in dense forest and inside a vehicle without an external antenna. An added feature is its very quick lock-on. It will lock onto the satellites within about 2 seconds of being turned on, provided you haven't moved it too many miles or too many hours having passed since it was last turned on. That's the SirfStarIII receiver. The USB 2.0 interface is much faster than the serial port interface of older GPS models. The color display is perfectly visible even in direct mid-day sunlight. The power button is in a good spot, never gets turned off or on by accident. (wish i could say the same about some of my other equipment :) Overall a very capable unit. I won't go into its many features because you can get all that from Garmin's website. Strongly recommended for serious users. If you're just a casual user you probably don't need this much of a unit.

Comments about Garmin Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS:
The interface takes getting used to... There are so many button pushes, menu selections, and sub-selections. Good that you can set it up to your needs. Bad if you need to change settings on the fly.
Watch out for the SD card latch beneath the batteries. It's flimsy and will bend or detach from the unit making the SD card useless. Not a good thing if you're depending on maps on Garmin's very expensive SD cards.
Pay close attention to the warning about overwriting Garmin SD cards. Garmin makes it easy to write over the data on the card. If you do, Garmin does not support a data restore even though you bought the data.
