Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

I use this headlamp in basic camping situations and I love it. It has great power, it's comfortable, and the three settings offer versatility. The lowest setting is bright enough for most activities which means the batteries go a long time. After I've had it on for ten minutes or so, I barely notice it's there. Great headlamp! Added bonus: My wife loves it too! She's been using it as a reading lamp at night, that's pretty comfy.

I used this headlamp while car camping. It was adjustable in position (up and down) and in brightness. It was also nice and bright. At night time in the woody mountains without any light whatsoever, we were able to get around easily and see everything. I plan on buying another one for my husband.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

There's no need to go over the benefits of how great it is having a good headlamp while doing anything requiring your hands at night, needless to say this lamp covers that need just fine. It is not overly heavy with large battery packs, the batteries are standard and the LEDs are actually quite bright with several power settings. I have no complaints and would definitely buy this again and recommend anyone looking for a good lamp to seriously consider this one.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

I used this headlamp every single day and night during a one month trip to Africa. The LED lights were always bright enough, even when on the lowest setting. It's comfortable to wear and is very easy to pack. I loved that the lamp swivels too. It allows you to look or talk with others without shining a bright light in their faces. I would definitely buy this again.

I've used this for work and play for about a year now. I am a roof inspector, which often takes me into dark attic spaces. I also use it for frequent climbing day trips. (cleaning up, taking down pro at the end of the day). It has come in handy during several power outages now as well. Durable and Comfortable. Could be brighter, but for the price, it exceeds expectations.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

I have used this head lamp extensively in the last year. I took this lamp on a six month motorcycle trip through Mexico and Central America. I have also used this lamp on a half-dozen mountaineering expeditions. While this head lamp is small, inexpensive and comfortable to wear, it has limited usefulness for actually doing things in the dark.

I found it to be okay for illuminating stuff that is close to me at night (reading in the dark, finding things in the tent at night, cooking etc) but the light is too dim to be useful for moving around comfortably at night. I had to deal with serious eye strain navigating in the dark during early morning mountain ascents using this product. I also had a problem with the batteries coming loose in the battery terminals causing the lamp to flicker on and off (this might not sound like a big deal, but this problem caused me to scrub an early morning solo attempt at Pico de Orizaba). The last problem with the lamp is that the light seems to dim relatively quickly after a battery installation. So a relatively weak light to begin with becomes much weaker after several hours of use.

This is my second Petzl Tikka headlamp. It is very well made and I have it with me all the time. I can think of many uses where I would need light while I need my hands to be free. It is reasonably water resistance but I would like it to be water proof - just to reach perfection!

Good product.

My poor old cat decided to pee in my camping gear. I couldn't get the smell out of the headband so they sent me a new headband. A week later I found that the battery case was corroded, so Tikka sent me a new lamp altogether. All is well. Except for the cat. He still has issues.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

I have used this headlamp for a few years and used the original Tikka before that. When LED headlamps were new, this headlamp was awesome. However at this point there are a number of models of headlamp, such as the BD Spot, that are bright enough to use for doing things at night, which the Tikka headlamps are not. Just fine for reading and cooking and whatnot. I have tried to use it for things like evening running, cycling, and for a couple of instances of horses escaping camp in the middle of the night, and this headlamp is just not bright enough for anything involving fast motion.

Not much to say but this is a great headlamp. I don't see why you would need more unless you are going on super long night hikes, then you may want a bigger battery pack light.

Pick one up.. well worth it!

Several Years ago a small group of hikers got left behind at the bottom of the Angel trail in the Great Canyon. The people that waited for us toll me that they could see light for the top.

I just bought my second Petzl Plus. I still use the first one after 2 years. It works fine, I just wanted a backup if I do a very long night run or race. I recommend it to everyone I run with.

This particular headlamp seems to have a history of losing it's beam brightness. Some are fine, others, no matter how many times you replace the battery just has very little intensity to the beam. Mine was fine for the first couple of hours and was never the same again. My friends thought I was crazy, but when talking with an REI consultant in the store, I was informed that this brand has that problem with some of the headlamps.

I use the product for sailing at night as it allows me to see lines, etc.

This light is one of the most durable that I have ever had - my 8 month old black lab/border collie mix chewed the headlamp and ate the batteries. After the batteries were removed from her stomach I put new ones in the lamp that suffered from various teeth marks and looked worse for the wear...AND IT WORKED! I was amazed!

I highly recommend this head lamp for brightness and durability!

Difficult battery replacement

Best Uses:
Backpacking, Car Camping
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

I own this head light, although I'm not sure if it is the "classic" Tikka Plus (as REI puts it) or the later model and it's not apparent how one can tell. I also own a similar light from Princeton. They seem roughly comparable in how they perform, but the battery compartment design on the Petzl Tikka Plus is cumbersome. It can be a little difficult to open. Once opened there are some rubber straps inside that act as a hinge for the two halves of the battery compartment. When opened, these straps tend to eject one of the batteries because it sits on top of the straps and opening the case pulls on them. This makes replacing that one battery difficult as it keeps wanting to pop out of place when you are trying to put it in. You also have to be very careful how you fit the two halves of the case back together as there are three tabs on one half that are supposed to fit into the other. It's possible to put the case back together without fitting it properly and thus leave the unit more susceptible to water and dirt intrusion. The Princeton has a better system in regard to these things and I'd recommend that one instead.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

I use this product quite a bit, even when not on the trail and using it for household tasks. I initially bought this to replace an OLD petzyl headlamp... you know, the kind that takes 4 AA batteries but still doesn't shine as bright as you'd like! Anyway, I not only used it at night to get back to my tent, but had to use it to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro because we started the summit hike at 11 PM! It worked great, except that occasionally I had wished that I could adjust the beam to a different intensity. But I guess I would have had to pay more for that option. The head band is comfortable and the entire device is light enough to have it not be a bother when wearing it. I highly recommend this product!

Not Built for Saltwater Use

Pros:
Bright
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Car Camping, Day trip, Hiking
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

As someone who fishes saltwater from a kayak at nighttime, I have tried a couple of the more reasonably priced Tikka lamps (including this one) and they do not hold up to the saltwater environment (both lamps were never submerged and used infrequently during my bi-weekly excursions). Of course, I now realize that I must spend more for a lamp that I can count on (Tikka models included) instead of trying to buy a headlamp on the cheap. If you don't depend on this lamp to do it's job when needed (car camping and the like) it is a great lamp but I recommend looking elsewhere if you need a product that you can depend on in tight spots.

This is a great headlamp. After getting over the initial teasing around having a 'headlamp' I've found that this light is amazingly useful. In addition to standard hiking/camping uses, I've used it while grilling at night, rummaging through the garage, and while working on my car.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

When my buddy first bought a head lamp and I made fun of him for being "too prepared" I quicly learned that no matter what your objective is, light makes it that much easier. I bought this head lamp just to help me in the dark. I never realized how much of my life is spent "in the dark." I have taken a new control over my life and provided light where in the past there has never been...even down the the simpliest task of taking the garbage down to the street. It is the best money spent and recommend everyone own their own head lamp...I am online to buy my girlfriend (who hates mine but wants one) a new head lamp right now.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

I recently got back from a two week backpacking trip in the Palisades Range of Idaho. I brought this headlamp along and it worked superbly. The different light settings were great because I could use low when reading in the tent and high when I was going to the bathroom at night. Overall this headlamp is great for any kind of outdoor activity. It also works great at home as a book light or for hands free work in dark environments.
My only complaint is that the battery compartment is hard to close and often times the batteries will fall out while trying to close the battery door.

There may be other lights that have come out since and claimed to be better, but I'll never willingly part with this masterpiece.

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

This is a decent basic headlamp, but the bar has been raised. I believe you can get a lot more for your money. One problem I have is that it's not voltage regulated. Because of this I can't use Lithium batteries in it which are 1/3 lighter, can be used in more extreme temps, and have a longer battery life than alkalines. The other issue I have with it is that it's adjustment is limited. It can only go up so far and down so far. This isn't that big of deal, but there are other, cheaper headlamps (i.e. Princeton Tec Fuel) that has far more adjustment capabilities.Because it is made in France, the cost is [$]more than it should be. Comparable lights that equal it's brightness and features are considerably less money. The switch is a little bit small, especially while using gloves in my opinion. There are others with larger switches. The claimed lumen is a little high. The best way to compare light output is to shine two headlamps side by side in a dark room. I found that the Princeton Tec Quad was considerably brighter even though the lumens listed were lower. All in all, the Tikka Plus is a decent light, but I feel I could have done better after some more research.

I've brought this headlamp on my last half dozen excursions - typically camping a few nights at a time and hiking/climbing during the day. It's been absolutely great. It's light enough to wear for long periods of time without being uncomfortable, and bright enough to find ANYTHING. Pick up the little zippered Petzl case for it, and you can toss it around anywhere!

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

This is an great headlamp. It's light enough and nicely balanced to work while running or biking. But most important, instead of the lousy PT alternative, the case is very well-designed. You don't have to be concerned with the locking tabs breaking off after a few battery reloads like the PT Aurora. I've replaced two of them before moving to the Petzl lineup.

This thing is even made in a former French colony - Tunisia, befitting the Petzl heritage. And it's a nice and light addition for travel. You can dim it for airline reading if you don't like the overhead lighting which is always too bright or not properly aimed, so your seatmate won't be blinded in the middle of the night.

This is a great headlamp. The batteries in front, 4 LED design makes it easy to use and light weight. There is no over the head strap and no exposed wiring, unlike some other headlamps. The LEDs provide bright, longlasting light. The four light settings provide multiple options for battery life and brightness. The flash setting seems not very useful in the dark, but could be used as a signal. For me, this headlamp has replaced most conventional flashlights.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

I use this lamp daily at work & whenever I hike. For close up work, you can't beat it. I have had no durability problems, though you have to be patient putting the batteries in. The "third battery" ( you will understand if you get one) wants to pop out when you close the cover, but as you get used to this you will learn to just use the cover to push it back into place as you snap it shut. The three power setting are great - my kids and I all wear them in camp at night on low, clicking them to medium or high when we leave camp to fetch water or whatever. On high, battery life is realistically three or four hours. On medium, the batteries last quite a bit longer & there seems to be no limit when it's on low. I'd recommend staying away from high, except in short bursts. In short, a great light for the money - lightweight and versatile. [...]

I use this headlamp on a daily basis for my work. It has stood up to some abuse. I have noticed that it comes apart were the batteries are stored pretty often, and the battery life is getting to be quite short in comparison to when I first got it. Overall I am happy with it. It has served me well even to this day. If you plan on using it casually or car camping it is PERFECT! If you are a little bit more extreme, or intend on using it heavily I would look at something else.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

The first one still works great! The second one broke with a short drop to the floor. Petzl replaced it at no charge. Every replacement, 2 or 3, has broken the same way with no known stress factor. They all crack radiating out from the power switch towards the battery opening. It seems something about this model has cheapened in manufacturing. The Petzl company has been good about replacements for free, but this is ridiculous.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

I use this headlamp everyday in the winter at work. I am a mailman and need it to read addressess in the dark (especially as I deliver all that Christmas mail late at night). I use rechargeable batteries. There's great battery life. I love that it takes regular AAA's instead of a special type of battery since I use it frequently. I also take it hiking, backpacking, camping, and kayaking. It doesn't have the farthest casting beam but works well. I've night hiked with it. I've used the flashing setting when we were waiting for a helicopter rescue when stranded by flash floods. My wife steals it to read in bed in our tent and every time she has to go to the bathroom. For the price it's a great light. Someday I'll upgrade to an adjustible beam and a beam that casts farther for night hikes but this has been great for my uses.

Comments about Petzl Petzl Tikka Plus LED Headlamp:

To be totally honest, I don't know how I survived this long without this light! I researched this light as well as others before I bought the Petzl. The Petzl seemed like the best bang for the buck and was brighter than the Princeton Tec that I had been comparing it to. I use this light for everything imaginable and the batteries seem to last forever. I've hiked with this light, skated, crawled in attics and crawl spaces under homes, read books, and set up camp. The one thing I use it for the most is working on cars, it's small enough to fit underneath a dash with you and much better than having a big, bulky, hot light. The Petzl makes wiring under the hood or car a breeze, because both hands are free. Changing the batteries is painless and no tools are required. I've droped it at least five times and it still works as well as the day I bought it. I love this light, I just wish it was sealed better for water proofing. I would higly recomend this light to anyone!

As an avid runner, I'm out quite often before the sun comes up on my long run days. To avoid cars, I enjoy running in a park (2.2 mile heavily wooded loop around a lake complete with deer, coyote, geese, etc.)I have always enjoyed the tranquility of running in the dark, until another runner was put out of commission for 6 months after an unfortunate incident with a pine-cone. After the accident,I went out and purchased the Tikka Plus--It is great! It's simple to use-even with gloved hands- and plenty bright, even on the lowest setting. It provides a large fiels of view and the batteries last forever. I recommend the Tikka Plus to other runners and family.

The Tikka Plus is another great product from Petzl. It delivers exactly what it claims to provide; a bright, lightweight and versatile headlamp. This is the best product! I love how durable it is. I was taking a shower at Boy Scout camp with it, dropped it in the water on the floor, the light cover popped off and it still worked. The light cover easily popped right back on though. There is only one bad thing about this headlamp. It is that once the battery gets low, the brightness of the beam starts to dim. But other than that one thing, this product ROCKS.

I use this every time I go backpacking, and I keep an extra in my car. The swivel head allows you to adjust the light to point at what you are working on, its weather resistant (a must), and the battery life is infinite! The only con is that it does not come with a red light (not filters, I have lost a couple of these so far). Red lights are great for keeping your night vision and for not inadvertently blinding your buddies.

This is a great product at a great price. For half the cost of some others, you get a well made, high intensity head lamp that will last. I've dropped it, mashed it between my head and a cave roof, stored it in hot and cold, and even submerged it on a canoeing trip, and it still works great. With three intensity settings, strobe, and adjustable beam angle, you'd be hard pressed to find something this can't do.

It's a basic headlamp, with good functionality. Battery life has been pretty good. I really like battery location. All the fancier lights with the battery pack separate from the light have had disappointing quality. I've tried a few from black diamond and petzle, inevitably the wires come loose from being taken in and out of the pack and it's really annoying to have to play the jiggle the wire game to keep it on. I find this light to be best, it's very bright, the angular adjust is nice. In addition to hiking and backpacking I use it to take the trash out at night, and around the house.

This is a great headlamp. I have 3 of them, one for myself and one for each son. It does all you want from a headlamp for a very reasonable price. Two Side Notes: 1. I use it at home at night to read, so as not to disturb my wife. Keep it in your nightstand when not in your backpack.2. I had owned a fourth. Took it out one day to see the casing was cracked near the groove used to open it for battery replacement. This may be an inherent weak spot in the plastic. I have no idea how it cracked, just that it did, in what seemed to be normal use. [...]. I liked the lamp so much I did not hesitate for a second to replace it with the same model.

I finally found a relatively light headlamp that I like for backpacking! I have only had it for about a month, so can't speak to its durability, which I suspect may be a weakness as the plastic doesn't seem that tough. Otherwise, this is a great lamp. Since it takes AAA batteries, you can use rechargeables and avoid having to purchase expensive disposable button batteries that are used in lighter models.

tikka plus is a fantastic headlamp. great value and a quality product.

i used to carry a 3D maglite, but this compact and lightweight lamp has made my oldschool flashlight obsolete. the 4LED's cast a bright spotlight with an adjustable setting (bright brighter and brightest with a flashing strobe)

don't let the compact size and light weight fool you. this lamp is rugged, powerful and stays put with its adjustable elastic headstrap. because of the LED technology, the battery life lasts an extremely long time without going dim as my old D cell lights did.

my only con is that i wish there was more of a difference between the light settings. i'd like to have more of a "dim" setting for rummaging in the tent, then kick over to the blinding spotlight settings that it currently has for outside use.

Small, light, long battery life, bright beam - this is everything I need. I especially appreciate the easy-to-use beam brightness adjustment, to save battery life with a dimmer beam when appropriate.

The headlamp is a must for backpacking, as well as any other use around the house, at the farm or anywhere we need light. My husband and I each have one, and we bring it just about everywhere we go. During the dark MN winters, we use it to hike at night. We also use it in the attic, during power outages, working on my family's farm, etc.

This is great if you like to work in your garden a little past sundow, or if you happen to be traveling to a part of the world that has rolling blackouts or just no electricity at all.

This headlamp was on sale when I bought it. It's a fantastic value! Even in pitch black, it's perfect for setting up a tent or for illuminating the path ahead. I'd buy another one if it broke, but it probably won't, I've dropped it several times and it's solid.

I LOVE this head lamp. It's comfortable strap and lightweight design make it a perfect all round headlamp for a variety of uses. I love it so much I have 2 - one for the car and one for hiking/camping. The one in the car came in very handy for changing a tire on a dark country lane. I have even found some unusual uses like handfree inspection of my dog's ears to check if they need cleaning. Have dropped it, sat on it, and even left it out in the pouring rain overnight yet it works as well as the day I brought it home.
