Fun, easy to set up and great for traveling!!

My fiance and I have been coveting Oru kayaks for several months, and we finally made the decision to splurge and buy them - and we are so glad we did! Our "maiden voyage" with the kayaks was on Bass Lake near Yosemite National Park, and they held up beautifully. They were super easy to set up (we practiced only once before memorizing how to do it, and we were able to easily assemble them without the directions the second time) We got a lot of comments from people passing by, many doubting their buoyancy, but the Orus held their own! We were able to fit both kayaks, our life vests, the paddles, a small cooler, and bags for four people in my SUV trunk without any problem! The seat is pretty comfortable; I love that the backrest is adjustable. We chose the beach kayaks over the bays because I we wanted the freedom of being able to fit a cooler or to bring my dog (a corgi) in the kayak with me. The paddles were also easily adjustable and the telescoping feature makes them easy to store in our two bedroom apartment. The only thing I noticed that bothered me (and this is not even close to being a deal breaker) is that the kayak feels a bit wider than what I am used to, and since you're sitting down inside of it, it makes it easy to hit the paddle against the sides. With some practice, I was more aware of this and adjusted my form accordingly, but I feel it's something to be noted, especially if you're petite. Overall, these kayaks get a big thumbs up and I can't wait to take them out again soon!

Fun with a kid

I tested this kayak in the Emeryville marina with my nearly 3-year-old daughter and it was awesome. Beside the fact it's easy to fold straight out of the case, it glides well and was comfortable with a kid between my legs. We got it up to a good speed and were able to maneuver easily. I could keep the boat upright without issue while my daughter reached over the side to touch the water even when stopped. Overall a fun, safe and comfortable folding kayak. My friend easily fit her 4-year-old twins in by putting one in front and one behind her. They thought that was pretty fun, too.

Compact water fun

I have owned two of these for around a month. I just love them. I have had canoes and kayaks before, but the ability to just keep one in my trunk just cant be beat. Its an amazing thing to just be able to get in the car and go kayaking whenever the weather and schedule allows. Other things I have observed: I can now set one up very quickly. The longest part usually is talking to someone who is so curious about them. They are easy to paddle. I convinced my mother to come kayaking with me (I am 43 so that will give you an idea of her age without me saying anything) and she remarked how easy it was to paddle. They are studier than they appear. Given the open deck they are only so useful in chop, but I have found them to feel quite sturdy even some waves. Get the lights! People are just facinated by seeing you in a glowing kayak. Plus some of the calmest times are right at dusk. All in all I place this in the same category as Sonos speakers. It was the product I always wanted without knowing it.

Very pleased

Very happy with this boat. I can set it into kayak mode in about ten - fifteen minutes taking a slightly leisurely pace and/or getting interrupted by curious onlookers. The beach model gives me the easy entry and exit I need and I'm okay keeping it in flat water, though I have dealt with slightly rough river rapids and waves kicked up by winds during a paddle that started more calmly. I've used it on quiet riverway, lakes and marshland---refolding went quicker when mosquitos were present! Already showing a little wear on "rubber"edging in a couple spots that can be rubbed by other parts as it is refolding. Last note: fits nicely into back seat of my Subaru Impreza without blocking visibility for driver.

Fantasic way to get onto the water!

I've wanted to get an Oru Kayak since I just missed out on Kickstarter, but finally nearly 4 years later I just went for it & got the Beach from REI. Fantastic service from REI for international customers. But the Beach kayak is fab! It's really made for calm water. It glides well in the water. It does pull a little to the right, but its not a big issue & a slight adjustment to paddling solves that. It's so light in the water it really gets going quickly! Easy to carry. And after the first time you put it together it really is easy to do this. I take my time & make sure it's all secure, and it takes around 10 minutes. What I love about it living so close to a protect bay, is I can look out & see if the water is glassy, just pop it in the trunk of the car, head down & be on the water 15 minutes later! I surf a lot & it really is as easy as grabbing a surfboard & heading out! There's loads of space for stuff in the kayak too. So far I've only put a water bottle & dry bag with a camera in it, but you could easily put a small cooler in there as it does say you can take a small kid or dog in it!! It seems tough enough not to worry too much about it. But I am still careful with it not to go over rocks or anything in lakes. On my 2nd trip out I did go over a rock I couldn't see in the water, and there is a slight scrap on the bottom. Nothing to worry about but it's made me be extra careful around shallow reefs in the sea or the shallows of a lake where there might be the odd big rock that's hard to see. Highly recommended and so glad I went ahead & purchased the Beach...I've been out in it more times than I though I would be already!

Great purchase

I had been longing for an Oru for several years, and I am glad I waited until they came out with the Beach model. I have never owned a kayak, but I knew I wanted something stable yet portable. The Beach is perfect for the recreational kayaker. Set up and take down is easy once you get the hang of it. It is comfortable and roomy enough for my 90 pound golden retriever to ride along. Seriously, the whole concept is an amazing engineering feat. Best part is the satisfaction I get knowing I don't have to lug around and store a traditional kayak!

Awsome fun

The kayak is amazing. No worries on folding and assembly. It goes together in a breeze. Best part, no loading on a roof rack, fits in the back of my suv. Its light, seating is very comfortable, and you cant beat the ease of entry. Get use to people stopping and watching, its a blast. On water, it seems fast, tracks well. 4 times out on lakes, perfect each time.

I was NOT disappointed

i bought 2 of these a week go. kinda wary. They are amazing. Took me 45 minutes to put first one together ....10 minutes to put the second one together. I was worried most about trackability in the water...fear not...i skimmed along effortlessly. i told my wife to go after that duck about 100 yards away..she is a newbie..she never veered off track even a bit. No ducks were harmed in this test. Buy this product...i wish i had stock in it.

Portable Fun

Easy set up/take down although not quite as quick as advertised. Each time we use, however, we get more efficient. Boat is stable, responsive, comfortable.
