The lid cracks after a few years of use. I've used this kettle moderately for 3 years now. The lid is warped from the heat. It started to warp about a year and a half ago. It is cracked and about to become non-functional. Every time I use it, the lid warps a little more. I know I'm using it correctly I have a new Jetboil stove. I don't cook on the highest setting at all. This pot and all the Sea to Summit collapsable dishes make the foot taste like plastic... even after 3 years! I'll be looking for a titanium pot before my next backpacking trip.
As usual Sea to Summit knocks it out of the park with this kettle. Lightweight and practical. Best of all, you can nest the X-bowl, X-Mug and a Primula Brew Buddy Portable Pour Over filter to create a very nice compact package for boiling water and making coffee. Very nice.
I had this for two weeks and the lid warped despite attentive thoughtful use, following the usage guidelines, typical behavior of a Virgo. Note that I also own the small X-Pot and that lid also warped. However, in that case I had misused it, because I had the fold-over handles attached to the lid while boiling water and apparently that is a no no. Since then, the replacement lid they sent me remains in good shape. Having that experience, I took care to follow their guidelines when I picked up the X-Kettle, but still ended up w a warped lid. Customer service is responsive and will replace your lid. Make sure to let them know if you have a problem because they don't appear to consider their lid to be a problem, saying that "We see under 1% of our X-Series experience any sort of issue and even less that end up with a broken lid from manufacturing defects." How could I be so unlucky as to strike out twice in a row? If you read other reviews of the X-Pots or Kettle on this site or others, you'll see complaints about the lid cracking or warping; I'm not alone. Other than the lid, I love this product. It pours very well ( little water cohesion with the spout ). In addition to heating water and soup, I find it great for hard boiling eggs. I find the Kettle more useful than the small X-Pot because of the handles and the pour spout. It is currently on the path of making my small X-Pot obsolete.
Never looking back! It’s more than just a kettle for boiling water. We’ve cooked soups, instant potatoes, and more in this kettle and it never lets us down! In fact, we are getting a second one to have multiple things going at once. This was hands down one of the best upgrades we have ever made for our camp kitchen! Super lightweight, fits right into our sea to summit bowls, easy to open, heats up super quickly, and very well made. Held up great after being used 3+ times a day over a week trip. Also keeping it as a part of our hurricane preparedness kit as it will make it super easy to use eat when we are without power.
Took it on an overnight bike packing trip first day I got it. Fits with some of my other x-pot cookware. Nice having a kettle with a spout devoted to just water. The water heat up pretty quickly over a MSR pocket rocket. I didn’t get the kettle when I got the the 2.8l and 1.3l thinking those would suffice but they spill when pouring and can carry over grease from cooking. I have been using x-pots for 5-6 years with great success. The silicon material holds up fine. Just need to remember to keep the flame under control.
I bought this items 2 month agou . The first time works very good to make a tea. The next time I used the lid it began to melt in the middle. I always considered using it without much patency of gas. The next 3 times I used it again continued to melt and without boiling the water. Truly the cap very poor quality. And the product can not be used without the cap due to water vapor.
Not a ding on the product itself, but on the description. They do warn that flames from a burner shouldn't reach the sides, and that this is for a smaller burner. All true. But a purchaser needs to take into account the size of the entire burner, not just the flame pattern. That's because if the pot can slide even a little to the side, the flames can reach up to the sides the pot. On many small backpacking stoves of course the pot won't even sit on the stove unless centered. But on bigger stoves, even on a small flame, it might not be a good choice for that reason.
I was trying to reduce the amount of stuff I carry in the jeep for car and back country camping and this kettle allowed me to leave the bigger pot at home. It packs exceptionally well and you don't have to be too careful with it. The lid takes a little getting used to but it fits perfect and easily when you get the hang of it. I've used it on a Soto micro-regulator stove and a with a Colman "Camp Propane Grill/Stove". I wish they would make a larger version for car camping but this one is great.
I bought their larger pot and couldn't wait to get the kettle. use this all the time even when in the RV and not camping. It's light and so compact. I think it will last a very long time too. I really like the way the spout pours well without dripping when I pour it over my coffee grounds. highly recommend this product
The company replaced the lid after it warped and cracked, so credit to Sea to Summit for good customer service. I spoke to someone via their facebook page and suggested a metal lid. The response indicated that a clear lid is a user preference. Thing is, you have to lift the lid to check on whether it's boiling because of condensation on it. I prefer a lid that doesn't destroy itself with normal use. I like the pot. It's nice to have something that doesn't add bulk to the pack. Either I'll find a metal lid that works or use a sheet of tin foil for a light, effective lid - sick of wasting a warped piece of plastic.
