really hit or miss design

Pros: Adjustable, includes locks, looks great, fairly sturdy & secure. Cons: Poorly written instructions, rack accessories are not compatible out of the box*, price I purchased a hull a port setup with this rack only to discover that these crossbars are larger than any aero or square tubes. Not a huge deal, but when you spend $900 for this, a Tacoma kit, and a hull a port (#834), it'd be nice if it worked & had the right length bolts. Especially as the Thule catalogue lists full compatibility, no fine print. If you intend to add a ski, kayak, bike, or any other goodies to this real, plan on visiting your neighborhood hardware store to get adequate bolts. Hindsight: should have hit a local fab shop to weld up a ladder rack. Would be far cheaper, and probably more sturdy.

Poor service

The product itself is very good. The service from Thule leaves a lot to be desired. While removing the rack last fall one of the clamphead channels that fasten under the side of the truck box slipped down under the bed liner. I attempted to purchase a new one and the response from Thule was they don't stock them and good luck trying to find a replacement.

Satisfactorily Used It For Over 10 Years Now

I bought this Thule rack in 2010 when my truck was new and it appears to be an earlier version of what is sold now. I’ve used it occasionally over the years for carrying either a canoe or Kayak on my 6.5 foot F150 box and it’s been the ideal solution when needed. It has also not deteriorated or suffered any damage in that time, however it has spent a lot of it’s life hanging on a wall in my garage. Driving at high speed doesn’t affect its load as long as the item is properly secured in place of course as I’ve travelled along at 110 kmh or higher with the Canoe up there with absolutely no problem, although checking the tightness of your straps and mounts periodically is essential for your peace of mind. One feature I especially appreciate is how you can independently adjust each rack to a different height as when carrying the canoe for example the back end can be set up to ride just over the tailgate while the front end clears the cab which helps keep it out of the airflow. I haven’t used it to carry lumber or construction materials but I imagine set at an even height that it would be fine for reasonable amounts of boards, etc. as well. In summary I’d say that this Thule rack has served its purpose exactly as I wanted it to, it’s definitely a good asset to have for your truck when needed.

Excellent rack.

I use this rack to haul kayaks to and from the ocean. Rack gets the 2 of the kayaks up and out of the bed leaving room for coolers and fishing tackle etc. No issues with product. Looks good with rack down while not in use. Thanks for making in black, I didn't like the silver color.

Better design than 5 years ago

This is my second Thule Xsporter. The new model fixed every complaint I had with the old version. New version adjusts to any height, was easier to install and no longer whistles down the road. I use it on a full size Chevy 1500 and a Chevy Colorado with great results. Very strong rack; I can stand on the bars and jump up an down on them with no sign of them giving.

Excellent Product

Much more robust than I expected it to be. Heavy duty castings lock up nice and tight on my Ford 350. Extends well above the cab for loading a canoe and drops down out of the wind when not in use. Takes about an hour to set up properly the first time but comes on and off in about 15 minutes after that. I like that it comes with a set of load stops as standard. I do wish it came with a spare set of square ‘T’ nuts so you can adapt your own kayak carriers to fit. They are available online but were out of stock so I made my own. The rack will take a full sized 16’ canoe plus two sea kayaks, one each side in J cradles. Very versatile.

Great truck rack

I explored all the options when looking for a rack for our SUPs for my 2017 GMC Sierra. For short trips, I use a simple tail extender and slide the boards in the bed. This rack is meant for longer trips where you might want to bed for more gear. The installation was easy, a little assembly first and then install the rack on the truck and tighten everything down. Once installed, the crossbars are easy to move up and down, the number notches make it easy to get everything the same height. Once you're done the rack, slides nicely back down so it's not up and in the wind making noise when nothing is on the rack. The brackets that hold the rack to the bed are easy enough to remove so the rack can be taken off but the locks included keep it secure. Overall I'm very pleased with the purchase and see a lot of use for the rack in our adventures.

Helps us be able to take bikes when going camping

When we'd go camping we'd have to have a friend take our bikes as we couldn't take our kayaks with our bikes in the bed of Dodge Ram truck. Now we put the kayaks on the rack and our bikes, table and chairs fit easily in the bed of our truck!! We also use the rack to secure our bikes with a python cable lock so they can't easily be stolen.

Perfect

After years of dealing with fixed height, tube steel, rust prone racks this one is a HUGE step in the right direction. Easy to install, very well designed next to some less expensive competition. Be careful with your accessories, ones that are specifically listed for "Thule" don't typically fit because this is definitely not the slender little bars most of them use. You either need something that fits the universal T slot mounts or some big clamp on ones.
