This is one of the most comfortable on chairs I’ve ever had. The design flaw is where the two back pieces meet the seat. The metal back pieces go into a plastic holder. That plastic holder bend’s after a few uses. I’ve tried to reinforce it with screws, but this is just a temporary measure. If the back rest went into a metal sleeve, It would be far more durable. I got this chair in June, it’s October and ready to be thrown out. I also tried putting hose clamps around the plastic to give it more rigidity.
I bought this chair on impulse while getting some parts for my bike in the store. This is the most comfortable chair that I can throw in my trunk I have found. Everyone else has very upright chairs, but they are all now jealous of mine and going to get one next time they are on the other side of town where the REI store is. The only criticism I have is that the drink holder does not stay upright, so you almost need a bottle (not usually a problem, ;-p) and with the laid back position, it can be harder to stand up out of it. We mostly use it to hang out in the driveway with the neighbors at night while all the kids play in the cul-de-sac.
This is a very comfy chair. As an added bonus I can play my guitar while sitting in it. Most lawn chairs with arms get in the way of the guitar, you have to scoot way out to the edge to hold the guitar. Not a problem with this one, and as an added bonus the web arm rest's are surprisingly comfortable. It's pretty easy to get out of too, you can brace on the frame to stand up.This one will get packed on the next car camping trip and I'll use it on the patio as well.
The chair is a cool design and very comfortable. But as others have noted, the plastic brackets that the backrest support poles fit into are very flimsy and mine warped after only a few weekends of use. At first the poles for the backrest would pop out every now and then but eventually it got to the point where the whole backrest would collapse as soon as any weight was applied to the chair, rendering it useless. I'm no skinny mini, but at 180 lbs am well under the max load of 300 lbs. Unfortunately I will have to return this one and can't recommend it.
I've owned 2 of these chairs. They are very comfortable and sit great while you're in store. Unfortunately my first one failed when 1 of the 2 backrest poles broke the socket it fits into. Fortunately it was only a few months from the purchase date so I exchanged it. The replacement chair was used twice before it too broke in the same exact spot, the SECOND time I used it. Problem is, it didn't see a lot of use and when it broke it had been over a year and REI would not replace or exchange it so Im left with a $60 chair I can't use. Generally I like the REI house brand, owning and happy with other REI camp chairs, tents, etc. but these chairs seem to have a major design flaw. Would definitely pick a different brand next time.
These are a very comfortable chairs and seemed very sturdy. I bought two of them for these reasons. after using only a couple times I found that the joint where the back support inserts into the back part of the seat was damaged. After more inspection, it appeared that the female end that accepted the back support tube was broken at where a rivet goes through the tube. I went to exchange the chair at my local store to only find one on the sales floor and it had the same issue. I took it to the salesperson and got a refund ( thanks for great service REI) I am a bit concerned that this will happen to the chair I still have. It looks like a design flaw to me to have a insertion point for the back support tube so close to a rivet that goes all the way through the tube.
This chair is almost perfect but has a fatal flaw. The good- nice design and small folded footprint. The bad- the support pole does not rest deep enough in the receiving tube which makes the pole slip out rendering the back rest useless. After two days of use the top part of the receiving tube bent outward so that the support pole slipped out constantly.
We don't have an REI outlet anywhere near us, so whenever we pass one on a road trip we drop in. Had no intention of looking for a chair on our recent drop-on en route to a family reunion, but when my wife sat in this she made it clear we weren't leaving the store without one. This is the most comfortable camp-chair I've ever sat in.... by far. This thing saw a lot of butts at the reunion, and many went looking online to rei.com for their own.
This is an extremely comfortable folding camp chair with a seating geometry reminiscent of some safari chairs of the past (a tripolino). The folding mechanism is far simpler and perhaps a tad bulkier than those predecessors, but REI brings this chair to us at a fraction of the cost. Bravo! While I originally purchased two chairs for my truck camper, the chair is so comfortable I now keep one set up in my study - I can fold it up and put it out of the way when not needed. Truly one of the best products I have ever purchased at REI!!!
This chair is comfortable and served me pretty well for a couple of years. Unfortunately, what started a persistent annoyance with a plastic pole going into a metal sleeve to support the back of the chair slipping. Well, the plastic pole insert finally broke off in the sleeve rendering the chair useless. The chair just didn't hold up and the support has a design/manufacturing flaw of plastic on metal.
