by fromBest high end headlamp I mostly use this headlamp for projects around the house. Whether it be crawling around in the attic, under the house, under the sink, car, etc, etc - this little gem sheds light on what you are working on in various ways. With aging eyes - this is my go to tool anytime I start working on something. With both flood and spot light options, it creates the right light for what you are doing. It's great for outdoors as well - fishing, hiking, trying to find the escaped house cat outside - whatever! I highly recommend this light - I own 2 of them - and one of them has been used heavily for 3 years and is still like new.

For me, the Apex headlamp brings a lot of simple features that I consider non-negotiable. Battery pack on the back of the head with an overhead strap is key. Allows you to have 4 batteries and it keeps the unit balanced rather than having the batteries and lamp all in one, making the headlamp feel front heavy. I've used this headlamp on climbing helmets and winter hats alike, and there is plenty of adjustment in them. There are two very simple buttons. One operates the flood, and it's high, low, strobe, and push/hold to shut off. Same with the other button for the distance beam. Can't get any easier than that. Plus, the buttons are big enough to operate with a glove on. It doesn't require tools to open the battery compartment. It's got a coin-type slot for opening the compartment, but it's designed to be opened with the side of one of the adjustment buckles on the strap. Dirt simple. The flood light on low beam lasts much longer than 150 hours with a lithium battery. And, it's plenty of light for camp chores and reading in the tent. Only downfall I've noticed is one of the strap holders on the battery compartment broke off when we dropped the headlamp once. We found the piece, glued it back on, and all is well. Rain, snow, or with my head buried deep in an auto project, this headlamp is perfect. No gimmicky features, it's burly, and you can have scale the brightness power to anything you need. Both my wife and I use this for backpacking and all things mountain related. It's one of the few headlamps I've used where I couldn't think of something I'd want to change.

by fromBright light Good bright light. Comfortable enough on my head. I use it for working around the house. Probably too heavy to carry in the backcountry. I have a lighter headlamp that I use for skiing and backpacking.

by fromRugged and generally reliable I've used battery powered incandescent bulb and now LED headlamps for several decades for long hours of night wildlife surveys. Over the last few years I have tried other 4 AA headlamps with relatively high wattage primary LEDs but like this one the best and have three. PrincetonTec has continued to upgrade the primary LED from time to time so that the peak lumen rating has gone up without a significant decrease in battery life. A couple have failed without mistreatment and were promptly replaced by Princeton. The regulator in this model emits enough RF to create impractical amounts of background noise when holding sensitive wildlife telemetry receivers, so for that unusual work, you need something else.
