Great for Intense Travel
I bought this pack in the red and loved the color and function. This backpack saw me through 3.5 weeks of travel abroad and held up perfectly. I was concerned about it being too large to qualify for free carry-on with certain discounted airlines but had no problems and avoided expensive carry on fees. The large compartment inside the bag offered just enough space to fit in enough travel supplies so I didn't have to worry about buying things abroad that couldn't fit, also the convertible duffel feature is a nice touch. Overall, I highly recommended this pack if you're looking to travel light and want to avoid excess airline fees. I love it!
Deceptively Large
Just used this pack on a two week trip through Europe. Only needed one laundry stop half way - The capacity is perfect. The overall size is manageable, so when we had to carry it when touring vs dropping it at a hotel, it wasn't too bad. (Our other pack, a RedWing 50, is close in that regard). It has just enough side pockets to keep handy items - handy (However, the RedWing 50 has more and, in reflection, we used those more). The styling is very clean and uncluttered which meant moving through crowds was easier. No issue using it as a carry-on. Being able to hide the straps behind a zip up panel meant less of a cluttered feel in small hotel rooms - we used that feature more than we thought we would.
Traveled for a Year (with the previous model)
I traveled with the previous version of this 40L backpack non-stop for a year in Southeast Asia and Africa. I carried summer clothes, pants, rain jacket, lightweight down jacket, underwear, a 15" laptop, first aid kit, toiletries, two camping towels, couple books and souvenirs in this. I'm a 5' 4" F, so it was a perfect amount of space for a light packer for a year. It held up very well and is still in great shape. The previous version didn't have a zippered compartment for the straps, so I used a rain cover whenever I needed it be tidy for checking in on small planes or for long bus rides (a lot). Worked great! I loved that it opened completely like a suitcase, made packing/unpacking very easy and I rarely unpacked everything, just kept it super organized (much harder to do with a top open backpack) and it stayed that way most of the trip. I'd definitely recommend a few garment organizers, I got mine at Muji, but Eagle Creek makes them too. Fit the interior perfectly. I had a Medium-sized one for my clothes and two Small ones, for underwear and misc (meds, band-aids, headlamp etc). Don't think it would accommodate bulky winter items as easily, but for my use it was perfect and I found it easy to walk with. When fully packed, total weight (without laptop) was 11-12kg = appx 25lbs. Everything shown in the photo fit inside. A previous version in gray/black color is pictured at top.
9 Weeks, 23 Countries, 10k miles and I still LOVE!
This backpack was actually loaned to me by a friend before I embarked on the 2016 Mongol Rally with Team #WeLive. It's a crazy overland drive in unsuitable hatchbacks from London, through Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and finally Mongolia before ending in Russia. And this pack not only lasted, but made the trip SO MUCH EASIER. The front loading system was ideal for living out of my pack for 9 weeks. My friends had top loaders and would not get items out just because of the inconvenience factor. I had room for everything I needed! The main compartment and the pockets are all just the right size and shape. It's comfortable. I'm 5'8, but my frame is quite small and I weight about 115 lbs. This back pack is so comfortable on, even when fully loaded. I had no problem walking through airports, cities, and deserts. It fits perfectly in an overhead compartment with no dirty looks from passengers or flight attendants. The straps tuck away super easily and quickly. So durable. This thing can stand up to extreme heat, cement-like dust, and being thrown around cars and roof carriers haphazardly. The zippers are excellent and the material is going no where. It's even stain resistant! I love this bag so much I'm trying to convince my friend to let me buy it from her because the orange and cream is no longer available! I might just have to get her the black and grey and keep this one for me!
Perfect Travel Pack
I bought this pack for a 3 week trip in northern Europe. The pack fit everything I needed to adhere to by 20lb weight goal. Shoulder straps and hip belt made it easy to cover walking distances to hostels. I was able to carry the bag on all of my flights, but I did not fly any European budget airlines which have stricter carry-on rules. Low profile outside made it easy to store the pack in lockers, overhead racks, and etc. The only drawback is not having a sling shoulder strap included for use when you zip up the hip belt and backpack shoulder straps. Nylon handles can be a pain when carry the pack through a large airport, so I would recommend ordering a sling shoulder strap. Overall, the pack performed well and is a good price compared to other similar packs.
Travel Light with this Carry-On
We bought two of these backpacks for a 12 day trip abroad to Peru, and are now convinced that "carry on" is the way to go! This bag is large enough to carry essential clothing, running shoes and more, and has enough room for a pair of heels and a dress! The top compartment is ideal for your make-up bag or liquids, the inside mesh compartment is great for delicates, and the side compartments are great for anything you want easy access to.
Well made and comfortable, but -
I bought this pack for a 2 week trip to Peru, which included hiking the Inka trail. I opted for the Zion Red. It is a nice looking, well constructed, comfortable pack. I (it) received compliments from other hikers and even the guide. Why only 2 stars then? Because of gravity. When you set this pack down for packing or accessing something during the day, the side and top pockets are facing down and the main compartment is facing up. I need a pack where all the compartments can be potentially open at the same time. Literally I had things falling out of the side and top pockets whilst trying to pack this thing in the mornings.
Easy travel in Europe as Carry on.
I did lots of research before buying a bag i noticed that this is one of the "Budget" carry on bags recommended. My wife and I did 3 weeks in Europe. I travelled with the last year's version of this bag and It was perfect. We were not packing light as we had to accommodate a few formal events. Here are some observations about European Travel with this bag. 1) The bag once filled to the brim will pass through a Ryanair/Easyjet/Flybe/British Airways/Airfrance metal bag checking device, even with the straps out. One thing you may have to do is put your jacket in the very top pocket rolled up and remove it if the bag doesn't fit - Easy 2) Travelling from London to Barcelona I managed to stuff this bag into the Ryanair Bag check and a 20L bear gryllis bag in the "personal item" bag slot. 3) This bag fits in all overhead carry on spaces including the above named airlines as well as italian trains.
Great Travel Pack
This is my go to travel pack. Coupled with packing cubes, everything stays neatly organized and easily accessible with the large opening on the front of the pack. My toiletries generally go in the top pocket and odds & ends like phone chargers go in the sides. The waist belt provides good support and the small zippered pocket works well for a phone, airline tickets, or any other small items that I need quick access to while running through an airport. All-in-all, this is a comfortable, well-made backpack that I do not see myself replacing any time soon. A couple suggested improvements: 1. The top pocket zips open from the back of the pack, meaning you have to zip the main compartment closed and then flip the bag over to avoid everything dumping out. While it goes against convention, the top pocket should unzip from the front so it is it accessible when the pack is laying flat on its back. 2. It would be nice to have a way to securely hold a jacket on the outside of the pack (compression rope, side compression straps, etc.).
Love the pockets
I love this pack. A lot of reviews comment on not much thought going into the pockets, but I think they are perfect. With the zipper located by the back panel the pockets are readily accessible while the backpack is on your back. I can get into the pockets by just taking off one arm strap and slinging the bag in front off me and easily opening the zipper pockets. It's nice for things like water, snack, camera, phone. Things I don't want to carry in my pockets but access regularly. The pockets close to the back also seems to make it harder for thieves to access while wearing the backpack. I think a lot of thought went into this unique feature and I like it.
