by fromHave owned countless boots, hiking&other The Men's Muck Boot Refresh Round Up Winter Boots (REI item #858833) are well-made, warm, waterproof, comfortable, and handsome. I would not classify them as ideal hiking boots, but more suitably as winter work boots for use around the homestead or workplace. Although I have not fully tested their waterproofing by walking through deep water or snow, they withstand spray from my sprinklers just fine without any seepage through seams. The main seam between the upper boot and the outer sole is protected by a band of rubber that is part of the outsole and is bonded to the leather. Furthermore, the "100% waterproof full-grain leather" exterior has some kind of waterproofing treatment that makes water bead up rather than soak in. Because the 4mm (not 5mm as described erroneously by REI) neoprene insulation ("4mm CR flex-foam bootie" per Muck) blocks water vapor, these boots can be hot and sweaty indoors or possibly even outdoors if ambient conditions are too warm or too humid, but that would be true of any waterproof boot, including the Gore-Tex-lined boots that I've owned. My only complaint is that the boots are made for feet with a very high arch (i.e., "high-volume feet") and there is no way to tighten the boots for people who were born with perfectly flat, perfectly fine feet like mine. It would be nice if there was a buckled strap across the instep and/or cuff that could be tightened. For my fellow flat-footers who want a more secure fit, you might prefer to get boots with laces, but I wanted the convenience and speed of slip-on boots like these. I've tried to make the boots snugger by replacing the original "6mm Nitracel insole" with an even thicker one while wearing my thickest wool socks plus liner socks, but I still feel like the boots will fly off my feet if I tried to run in them. I originally ordered a smaller size of this boot from REI, but it jammed my toes and I exchanged it for the next bigger size, so I know that I have the smallest size of this boot possible for me. Otherwise, these boots suit my purposes just fine, so I'm not planning to return them despite the fact that this lifelong runner doesn't dare to try running at full speed in them. After almost daily use for short periods each day during the 3 months since getting the bigger size from REI on 12/16/2013, the boots still look brand new even though I haven't polished or treated the leather! My only maintenance has been to wipe water drops off the leather exterior with a paper towel, if needed, when coming back indoors. Here are the maintenance recommendations from Muck Boot Company, which I quote: 1. Don't worry about getting them dirty. They wash up quickly with soap and water. 2. If they get wet inside, take out the cushion insole and blow dry the lining. 3. To condition the rubber, wipe down with mild soapy water and air dry. In addition, the "grippy rubber" outer soles show no wear at all. They are not Vibram-type carbon-rubber soles, but they have a firm yet somewhat softer composition than Vibram that does not make a clunking sound like Vibram does as you walk on sidewalks. I like that I can walk around almost silently without even trying. I also very much like that the mildly ridged and textured soles do not have deep cleats or lugs, so they only pick up a minimum of mud and muck while still providing good footing in slick soil. I suspect that they would not do as well on ice or hard-packed snow as a more aggressive tread might do, but I haven't actually experienced those circumstances with these boots. Overall, I like the boots and would definitely consider buying them again, but I think that this pair will last for years. Thanks to REI for offering these boots!

by fromWarm and Dry I purchased these Muck Boots to use for work in construction here in the Northwest. They keep my feet dry and warm in mud, rain, and snow. They are very easy to slip on and off & don't have large cleats to clog up with mud, dirt, or snow. Traction is more than adequate for my daily use. The only down side is that the pull on loops at the top back of the boot catch my pant leg whenever I standup after sitting or bending over. A little annoying to undo many times a day. I have thought about purchasing taller boots to avoid this issue. Otherwise, a great boot.
