Loss of confidence

Took them for my first hike after buying them and the center section bent into a "C" while descending, causing me to have a pretty hard fall. I bent it back enough for me to make it back home, but I don't know if I could ever trust these again. I have another pair of BD trekking poles that I have had for 12 years that have never failed me once, I just didn't like the old "twist click" part of them, guess I am back to those. BD was quick to process my warranty, and I guess a replacement part is on the way, for all the good that will do. I think I'm just going to toss them in the closet and pull them out for a swap meet next year or something.

Very solid, or "pro"

I just bought these, and have limited use on them so far, but I do recommend them. I spent a while at REI comparing the differences between the poles in stock, and one big thing led me to spend a little more and get these: the "FlickLock Pro" closures. My previous pair of poles had the traditional mechanism where you twist to lock the extensions in place. Can be tough to do, especially if your hands are a little numb, or it's wet. A lot of companies have these locking mechanisms now, but these were the only ones I could find made out of metal. There's of course nothing wrong with plastic if done right, but all I could find seemed to be about ready to break...new on the shelf. These seems like they'll last a lifetime (but of we'll have to wait and see for that). Secondly, I paid close attention to weights. These (and the version with a shock) are not as light as carbon poles, but it's literally 2oz difference per pole. Likewise I almost went to a cheaper model, again thinking what's a couple more ounces, but the build quality seemed worth the extra money. So I'd say these overall are pretty light, just not the lightest. If you have the extra cash, by all means upgrade to carbon. Thirdly, grip quality: these seemed to be the best I could find (non-cork). They have good quality dense foam. There is soft and strong top rubber on the grip. The straps are great - padded and durable (or so it seems to a new user). And importantly to me, the grips are long - over 11 inches. I like being able to choke up the handle when trail conditions require, and so many poles seem to have only hand-sized grips. Lastly, snow baskets. These come with snow baskets. Not a big deal, since they are otherwise $7 additional. And certainly no deal at all if you don't snowshoe. But I would need them, and other Black Diamond models don't come with them, so that'd be an additional expense to include.

Love these things!

These are my first set of trekking poles. I looked at alot of different models before choosing these. Most poles have plastic tabs on the flick locks and I wondered how durable they would be. The locks on this model are made of metal and seem very sturdy. I tried them out yesterday and they were rock solid. The locks keep the poles in locked position with no slipping at all. The foam grips are extremely comfortable. I hiked about 8 miles in the mountains with them and there was alot of elevation change going up and down. I found it so much easy going up and down with these bad boys. And normally my legs are tired and sometimes a bit sore after a day of hiking, but my legs feel fresh as a daisy using these poles. Highly recommended. I only wish I had bought them sooner!

excellent!

These were essential in getting me up steep mountain trails in Costa Rica. They are lightweight yet durable, and held up to miles of pounding- I felt like I could lean my body weight on them and slam them into the bedrock without hesitation if need be. I like the locking mechanism. A+

Light, bomb proof, and all-purpose

I wanted something that would not only function as trekking poles, but that I could also use as poles when I go out backcountry skiing/splitboarding. I've used these now for one season, and so far I've been very impressed. Very light, but at the same time I don't feel like I have sacrificed in terms of durability. The Flicklocks haven't failed me once -- as strong and reliable as I had hoped they'd be. Changing to the snow baskets was relatively simple once I figured out what I was actually doing. Have been extremely happy with these thus far!

Great pools, light, strong, flip lock works great

I got these pools to replace a pair of Black Diamond pools that I used for 10 years and loved. These new pools are also great with improved flip lock and same light, and very strong/stable design. The only down side is the new pools have a more narrow grip and I am finding that my hands get more fatigued after a couple hours of intense use.

Great to use and pretty durable

Have been hiking with these poles for 4 years now. What can I say? First of all - great poles, light-weight, pretty durable and easy to clean. Secondly - sharpness of the spikes is good for hiking on rocky surfaces. Thirdly - light-rejective marking on the poles is still there - in comparison to the just "trail" poles from BD - it is much more durable. What puzzled me a little bit is: 1. That shock-pro feature with little red rubber ring became loose on one of the poles and started to move a bit. This result on a non-cozy feeling when you hike (you have a feeling that something is about to break). 2. W/o putting too much force on the poles - they became a bit non-axis on the most bottom segment and the middle one - which results in a bad closing of the poles. 3. The stripes on the handles became much easier to get loose, so it requires much more time on adjusting those. Apart of this - poles were used for hikes ~800-900 km and still are in good conditions.

Excellent for x-country use

Used on Sierra High Route from Kings Canyon to Bishop. 72 miles, 51 off trail above 10,000 feet. Quick to adjust, light weight, and were strong on rock, scree, and all types of terrain. Highly recommend these poles. I have been doing Mountain Rescue and mountaineering for over 45 years.

Very durable!

I’ve had this pair for 4-5 years. I’ve used them all over the White and Green mountains on all types of terrain. I’ve used them for Nordic skiing and backcountry snowshoeing treks. Locking system is excellent, very durable pair of poles, would definitely recommend these poles!
