Comments about Schwinn Midi Mesa IG3 Bike - Boys' - 2012 Closeout:
Bought this bike from REI Outlet for my 11 year old son. I'm very pleased with the purchase. It has high quality components for a kids bike; most everything is alloy except the handle bars (steel) and pedals (resin). Combined with a quality aluminum frame, the result is a light bike that's easy for him to handle. The 3 speeds are just enough to introduce him to the concept of shifting without overwhelming him with choices. The ratios are fairly widely spaced and work fine on the flatish streets and bike trails around here. I feel secure knowing there's a coaster brake so he can stop easily even if the rims are wet. The only negative I have observed is that the bike seems to have a lot of drag on coasting. I don't know if its the 3-speed hub or the tires, or both, but the bike just doesn't coast as well as my or my wife's bikes. That's a small thing.
My only regret is that I didn't buy this for him a year or two ago. The frame design is such that most ten and maybe even 9 year olds could fit. I expect him to only get a couple years out of it before outgrowing it. That said, the quality suggests it should still be plenty serviceable and I expect I'll be able to sell this bike used in a couple years for at least half of the REI Outlet price I paid. In the meantime, this seems the perfect intermediate bike between his previous 20" BMX bike and, eventually, a real "adult" bike.
Service and delivery comments:
I had the bike shipped to the closest REI store for pick-up. It was experty assembled at no extra charge.
