The North Face Surge Laptop Pack - Women's - 2012 Closeoutis rated4.0out of5by1.
Rated4out of5byfromExcellent Pack, Excellent PriceI bought this North Face Womens Surge backpack for myself after coveting the Surge II and not being able to afford one. I commute in NYC and always have my heavy laptop with me. I needed something that would stop damaging my back and neck and allow me to safely carry my laptop, but still give me room to carry more if needed. This pack does the trick. The bag is very well constructed. It's just like the Surge II in all the ways that count. It even feels the same when it's on your back. I would actually prefer having the computer in the main compartment, but having it separated really does keep it safe and protected. There's also a special compartment on the bottom for your cords. Really nice to have those separate. I love the stretchy outer side pockets (even better than the Surge II). Not only do they have the top load option for a water bottle or sunglass case, but there's a secondary side pocket that's great to stuff an energy bar or keys into. I use it a lot and it's easy to reach back behind you and stuff something in there. The main compartment is spacious and smooth. Nothing gets snagged in there. The secondary compartment has lots of places to organize pens and a notepad... or to use as a dopp kit if traveling. And then there's the front pocket area. Whaaaaaat????? Weird. You really need to have a little easy-access top zippered pocket for a cell phone or pens or Metro card... this bag has it, but under a clipped flap. That weird flap also covers two zippers that, when up are a slightly unusual stuff pouch and, when down, reveal a strange envelope of more organizational tools. Totally bizarre and not very user friendly. When looking at the photos, it would appear that the two zippers on the front would be two pockets. But they're not. They just let the front of the bag fold down so you can get to that strange secondary pen-holder section. Who knows what they were thinking on that one. Obviously, it wasn't continued forward to the Surge II. HOWEVER - if you don't care about having a little front zipper pocket, then you will not miss it and the fact that this is so much cheaper than the Surge II, but is basically the same bag, should be a major selling point. I can carry three times the weight as I did with my old pack with MUCH less strain. Love this bag... even with the weird front flaps. (The least important part of the pack, really.) Finally, I got the purple version which is basically black in front, so you're not walking around like, "Hey, I love purple!!!" It's just a dark purple bag with mostly black straps on front. Easy to live down, even for people who usually stick to basic black. I definitely use the sternum clasp and hip belt when carrying heavier loads or walking long distances and it really does help with weight distribution, as do the cinches on the sides of the pack. Definitely worth the money.
