Rated3out of5byfromWonderful idea, Mediocre ExecutionI'd been looking for 1) a small lantern to take backpacking and camping with the kids, and 2) an off-the-grid charging solution for my phone (for ~2 charges). So when I first saw the Arka I was blown away, as it was EXACTLY what I needed. So I bought it, and this is where I'm at: Pros: Easy operation, great output, long lasting battery life, compact, great looking design, the hooks on the top are amazing (so much better than a single D loop). Cons: Cheap construction, trouble with/inconsistent phone charging, expensive. What I Liked: Great idea; It really fit the bill of what I needed. It was impressive with regard to output and it brighter and cleaner than the propane lantern I had along. It did an especially wonderful job of lighting the tent interior, and the split hook/loop design on the top is outstanding to get that lantern to hang from anything. What I Disliked: 1) The Arka turns from a flashlight to a lantern by sliding up a translucent sleeve around the unit, which appears to stay retracted/extended solely by friction and a small ring grove on the top and bottom. The sleeve on mine slid freely. It stayed extended pretty well, but would not stay retracted, thus having the tendency to convert from a flashlight to a lantern on its own when I pointed it down on the trail. The flashlight is designed to work with the sleeve retracted so that the LED shines through a lens; therefore even a half centimeter movement significantly affects the flashlight's performance. 2) The internal electronics in the bottom that regulate charging (both of the unit itself from the wall and of a device connected via USB) seemed cheaply designed. Mine was askew a bit from the holes and recessed a bit, so it was difficult to plug anything into it. The second night my internal electronics broke free from their internal mount and it was impossible to plug in anything. I returned it due to this. 3) It was very inconsistent with charging my iPhone 5S. I plugged it in and my phone did not recognize it. Only after disconnecting /reconnecting the USB and wiggling it did it finally begin to charge. Then, about 30 min into the charge it would disconnect again. Both nights I attempted to charge my nearly drained phone I woke up to ~60% charge (while the Arka still had a significant amount of charging ability left). 4) Cheap componentry provided (i.e. the USB and wall plug). Not a huge issue, as I used a smaller USB anyway. 5) Foot stands are a great idea, but a bit cheap. Although small, they did a pretty good job. They are held on by screws on the unit, and after using them for a bit the screws came a little loose and they started to move freely from the unit. Conclusion: This lantern has so much potential but it's just not there. Mine may have been defective, I don't know (I really hope it was). As noted above, I returned mine after my first 2-nighter because the internal electronics broke free from their mount and the lantern became useless. But here is my quandary; This is the exact device I need and there is no competitive alternative. So, I'm going to buy another one. Although a little hesitant, I would recommend it just because it is such an amazing idea for a device. Fingers crossed that my unit was bad and that it's replacement will be great. I'll write an updated review when I get a chance to take out #2.

Rated5out of5byfromWorks GreatTook this lantern on a recent trip to Acadia. We were car camping and going on day hikes and used this a lot! Fully charged it before getting to Acadia and used it 3 nights on dim in the tent for a couple of hours, a few small iphone charges, one full 0-100% iPhone charge, AND as a flashlight when we hiked Cadillac Mt for 2 hours in the dark to see the sunrise. It still had power left when we were done with the trip. I was really impressed with the UCO Arka. Its small and fairly lightweight but obviously not for ultra-light use. Its powerful and has multi-uses. It seem pretty solid but I don't know how many times i would feel comfortable dropping it. For everything you get out of this lantern the price is very reasonable.

AND i can charge my I-phone and camera from the light. I'ts not too big or that heavy unless you are ultra light. Great for emergencies. Going to get one for my family members even if they don't camp, this is a very usefull price of gear to have.
