So far, so good
I bought this bike rack because I was planning on biking RAGBRAI. So far, that's the only time it's been used, as I tend to commute by bike, so no need to transport. The directions were easy enough to follow, so putting it on my car wasn't a hassle. The first trip it went about 725 miles roundtrip. It stayed tight. On the way home we had to stop a couple times because straps just wouldn't stay tight. I don't know if it was user error with where they were placed on the car. I'll have to see on the next trip or two it does. But for the price, it seems solid and the pieces seem like they will last (rubber instead of plastic).
Great solid bike rack
It took me about an hour to install it the first time...might want to do this when you're not in a hurry to leave to catch a ferry and it's pouring rain as I was. However, after figuring it out the first time, it's on and off the car in minutes and holds the bikes nice and securely, feels very solid and long lasting. Also, be careful when installing the anti-sway carriages as I put them on in the wrong place (the instruction booklet was a bit confusing), and it was difficult to remove one to get it on the correct side for putting the bikes on.
Unfortunate Purchase
We needed a rack for three bikes and this one came highly recommended for a 2016 Honda Accord Sedan. One bike hauled 100 miles not a problem. Three bikes hauled 20 miles BIG problem!!! Damaged the trunk lid and ruined the plastic cladding on the bumper. The protective foam pads tore as well. REI returned it but we are looking at a big car repair bill.
Complete Fail
I bought this from REI a while ago. Poorly engineered from top to bottom. Base of the rack is narrow and unsteady, the clips a round and loosely "attach" to the car and the slightest jostle will cause the clip to slide down from or across the spot where they were originally anchored. The result is a bike rack hanging from two clips and resting on a narrow 10" base. With every bump and turn you hold your breath wondering what horrific result you will encounter. Don't buy this rack. The saris rack is infinitely superior.
1 Bike Reliable
I own a hitchless Ford Escape. After doing a bit of research, and just input from the REI associates, I moved forward with the Gateway 3. Everything was perfect while my bike was the only one on the rack. Once I added another, it was very wobbly, the anchor supports would shake loose, and I became very nervous traveling with it across the state. This past weekend, we headed to Northern MI and I had to leave the bikes home because it was too unreliable....Hoping for a little help from my friends at REI for a refund.
Cradles not durable and takes paint off bike frame
The Gateway 3 is not built for highway speeds. After transporting my bike a few times (about 20 miles round trip) the part that holds the anti sway cage broke on the cradle. I thought it was a fluke until a second one broke. Fortunately there's middle wall that is used to support the bars that attach the cage to the cradle, otherwise the bike would be swinging around causing damage. And the anti sway cage rubs the paint off the frame. Also, if you plan to transport a long distance, the cradles will creep up the rack bars. After a 100 mile drive, I found the rear cradles that held the bike were butted up to the middle cradles. Buy this rack if you don't have to drive faster than 40mph, otherwise look elsewhere.
Good Quality, Easy to assemble
I bought this few weeks back after doing few weeks of research. The rack is sturdy and efficient for aluminum or equivalent build material.
Excellent Bike Rack
This trunk bike rack is rock solid and holds are two bikes snug and secure. Have used other trunk racks over the years but found this Thule Gateway 3 to be by far the best I have owned. Delivers a reliable and sturdy base platform on which the bikes go and then securely holds everything in place. It was easy to put on and is easy to take off the back of our car. Very glad I purchased this rack.
Great customer service
I bought this rack after originally buying a roof rack. I hated the roof rack from the get go. They had to install it backwards, it whistled horribly and was difficult to use on my SUV even though I'm 5'11". After trying to deal with it for 2 months, I went back to REI to see if they could do anything. I was thrilled to find out I could simply return it without any restocking fee so I got this rack instead. While I haven't really used it yet I have set it up which was pretty easy. It isn't light but therefore seems sturdy.
Quick Setup - Box to Trunk
After reading the setup instructions, this trunk rack was pretty easy to get dialed in & loaded up with a couple bikes. As others have mentioned, buying a 3 bike rack to carry 2 bike makes life easier. I've only used the rack once, but the product seems durable.
