by fromThis pack delivers! I bought this pack because I was starting to do more camping with Boy Scouts. What I like about this pack is the high-capacity and the flexibility of taking the top part off and using it as a day-pack. I have used it on a multi-day camping trip where I put my 4-man tent, personal gear and clothes in it and there was still room! On another trip, I took it to a week long, Boy Scout Summer Camp, and the detachable day pack was perfect to carry my smaller items around while leaving the larger pack in the tent. I am 5'-8" and I found the ability to adjust the torso to fit me was really helpful for comfort. That is true for the entire pack's construction - there are lots of straps to tailor it to my personal preferences and comfort and the padding on the back does a great job of enabling an air gap to keep your back cooler. I found the two large side pouches really helpful, you can use it to hold water bottle or hiking poles, or really whatever you want. The zippered pouch in the front is plenty big for you to put whatever you need quick access to on the trail and the mesh bag is great for small items like bug spray, sun block, or even a place to put wet socks to dry off while you hike. There are two small, zippered pouches on the waist strap as well. Those were good for your keys, lip balm, and loose change but not much else. Still, it was good to know exactly where I put my keys! There is a zippered pouch on the bottom that was plenty big for my sleeping bag. The big appeal is the main compartment - it is huge! There is a pouch for a hydration system and the rest is one giant, cavernous bag! Put whatever you want in it, however you want because it will take it all! So far, I am very happy with this pack. It does everything I want it to do, is well constructed, provides flexibility with the detachable-top day pack, and is reasonably priced. I am looking forward to taking it out to Philmont next summer!

by fromGREAT bang for the buck I use this backpack for big loads on multi-day hikes. It carries the weight and bulk comfortably and securely, and I am able to shift weight between hips and shoulders on the move, with no problems. The only malfunction occurred with the sternum strap. It attaches to the pack on two sections of hard plastic piping, (one on each side), and the strap itself can easily slide up and down on this plastic piping or "rail". VERY easy to adjust the sternum strap location, but the left strap has pulled loose from the "rail" twice now. I contacted the VERY friendly and helpful staff at Alps Mountaineering, and they said they would investigate and get back to me ASAP with a solution. Great folks at Alps Mountaineering, great backpack.
