Comments about SmartWool TML Mid Full-Zip Hoodie Jacket - Men's - 2011 Closeout:
Sizing:
I usually wear XL for midlayers. I ordered an XXL in this case, reading that it may shrink. Still, even the XXL, before any washings, felt very slim. The back-length is short too. But the sleeves, aside from being a little slim, are too long. Cannot use the thumbholes for sure.
Color:
Much darker than in REI's pictures. The hoodie is a very dark and lackluster grey, not the shining silver depicted in the pictures on the website.
Fabric:
Though it says "superfine" merino wool on the label, unlike the baselayers and socks of Smartwool, the garment irritates. The skin exposed to the lining itches very uncomfortably. Even with a baselayer on, which, of course, cannot in any case outcover the skin than the midlayer, the covered part of the skin still feels itchy.
And it does not have the sheen as pictured here, or as some of my other wool garments have.
Thickness & Warmth:
The hoodie is a lot thinner than I expected or the pictures suggested, and is too warm and does not vent well, which really doesn't mean much "temperature regulation", one of the main reasons I bought wool, that it was supposed to be cool when warm and warm when cool.
Problem:
The high collars are what I thought would be a most useful feature. Because a lot of heat would be lost through the top if not "collared up". But the collars of this hoodie, when all zipped up, are uncomfortable if not unwearable.
The reason is simply that the neck girth of the hoodie is too small. When zipped up, it does look better than some of my jackets, but the design sacrificed comfort for style, and the result is an extremely uncomfortable feeling, like having a tight leash on the neck.
Also when you lower your chin, the collar cloth and the zipper bunch up toward the neck, and forms a hard knot, restricting movement and making the neck pressure against what feels, best described, like a stone.
And, as mentioned above, the fabric is itchy. So when zipped up, the collars irritate the skin, and the mouth. It is just since it fits tight, it irritates even more and also cannot be ameliorated by a baselayer.
Pro:
The build quality seems very good, though I found a loose thread on the left cuff just taking it out of packaging.
