Comments about Hummingbird Swim Pouch:
I was looking for an ancillary pouch to keep my passport, phone and a few pocket items in when I run, swim and shower while traveling. Normally I wear a longitudinal pouch in my pants hanging off a belt to hold documets, cash and credit cards. I wanted womething to attach directly to my body that was waterproof. I have adopted a 7" tablet as a replacment for a laptop when traveling. Saw this Hummingbird pouch and hoped it would do double duty as a very small man-bag to carry my tablet when I did not want to use my usual shoulder bag, i.e. under a jacket when going out at night.
Fabric seems rather stiff. Ziplock-style closure was particularly stiff and did not inspire confidence in waterproofness as it opened with very little effort. Weight could be reduced with lighter, less bulky materials- weighed at 3.4oz empty. Did seem very durable. Instructions showed a couple of ways to wear it: over the shoulder and over the shoulder and neck, both secured with a removable elastic band around the torso. Neither worked for me as the neck strap was too short. I tried to picture wearing this visible over my clothes, and underneath. Guess it would be about impossible for anyone to get to underneath the clothes including me. I had hoped to fit my tablet in the mesh accessory pocket, and it did, though it stuck out a bit awkwardly. Also possible to wear this around the waist without the elastic band, this seemed to me the most practical and comfortable...again the strap was just a little too short for me. Plastic buckles were low profile but low strength. I'm sure a determined theif could give the thing a good yank and be off with it in a second.
For many years I used a swim pouch, which I think I got at REI, that was a little larger than passport-sized and made from semi-stiff coated waterproof fabric. It opened on the short end by folding over stiffeners at the opening and then sliding a plastic clip over the stiffeners to seal it. The clip had a tunnel through which a bead-adjustable soft neck cord passed. I could wear it around the waist, over the neck or over the neck and shoulder. I could wear it over or under clothes or in a large pocket. I still have the pouch and it shows little or no wear. The plastic clip, however, has completely disintegrated. I have been looking for a replacement for that pouch for several years now. Unortunately this is Hummingbird pouch is not it.
I would like to see someone make a pouch just the dimensions of a passport from silnylon or Cuban fabric or polyurethane coated nylon or polyester ala Ortleib, Seattle Sports or Outdoor Products' recent fabrics. It should close on the short side with a low-bulk, waterproof and soft closure. Have just enough room for passport, cash and a few cards and maybe a phone. No bigger. It should have a a couple of loops to hang it from a belt, a waist or sholder cord, or a couple of safety pins.
