REI Taj 3 Tent - 2012 Special Buy is rated 4.7143 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ridiculously good tent I've used this tent for years now. I spend about 30 nights a year camping, some off a motorcycle, some car camping, and some backpacking. This tent makes all these trips. It's got a decent peak height, large vestibules, a window in the fly for checking the weather or that bear that's trying to get to your food stash. It's not a super light tent, but is big enough for a friend and a dog along with room to stash your packs out of the weather. The poles are also a bit longer than I'd like, they don't fit in motorcycle bags, but neither do most tents. I'm always shocked at how long it has lasted, no ripped seams, no leaks, no condensation issue, nothing but excellent performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from solid tent This is a true and solid 3 season tent. I got it to replace REI Quarter Dome t2 plus and it is improvement in almost every way. It is a little heavier but unlike T2 plus you can actually two long 25 inch rectangular pad with room to spare. Also, it doesn't collapse in the wind and it has enough solid fabric to block wind/sand and snow. All the materials are heavy duty and the fly in particular is bomber.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great performance for many years! After almost 15 years of using this tent I find myself shopping for another, not really to replace it but to augment it with a smaller/lighter alternative for backpacking. The RAJ3 has sort of a weird flattened hexagon shape that fits great for 2 people, but is not really the right shape for 3 people. Some other reviewers have called it a 2.5 person tent and I agree. I have used it by myself on Boy Scout campouts probably over 100 times and for car camping with a single person plus gear it is perfect. I also take it for extra sleeping space on RV trips. I've used it during some pretty nasty weather with great results. Once at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Texas we had 20 degree weather and 70 MPH gusts and the RAJ3 was fine. Some of the troop tents collapsed that night and we had boys that ended up in the troop trailer, but I slept great in the RAJ3. I've also been in in some torrid rains with no problems. I had to retreat the fly last year but what do you expect after 13 years! With the footprint and fly only, it make a great summer set-up or shade for the beach. The only negative: the set-up is a bit complicated but I've owned it so long now I can do it in the dark without a flashlight. At over 8 lbs (with footprint and upgraded stakes) it is too heavy for single man backpacking. Now that I am shopping for a more minimalist replacement I almost feel like I am abandoning an old friend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The (almost) perfect tent I absolutely love this tent. I've been using the same one for some ten years now, and it is still in the same condition it was when i bought it. I've used it for anything from car camping to backpacking in Yosemite. The tent is a snap to set up once you understand the pole layout. The tension hook-based design is great for quick set-up and tear-down -- no annoying pockets or tubes to slide poles through. I can easily set it up in minutes by myself at night (I've done it in the wind before on rocky ground with no stakes, too). It is very stable and can be used stake-free in most cases -- I only use stakes when there is a lot of wind or I need the vestibule due to moisture or rain. When the rainfly is tightened around the poles over the tent and footprint, you can actually pick up the entire tent to shake it clean. It's *that* sturdy. Some people have complained about the weight, but as a heavy pack-mule I've never been bothered by it. In fact, I carry the stakes, footprint, and rainfly in the bag wherever I go, regardless of the weather. The rainfly is good for keeping in heat on cold nights -- I use how much of the tent I cover up as a thermostat. As for size, like most tent ratings, the 3-man rating is a bit of a stretch. I've done it, but the shape doesn't lend itself well for 3 people's comfort. As a 2-man tent, however (the reason I purchased it), it is a mansion of tents, allowing one to store gear and have plenty room to move around. On a rainy night you could easily play a game of cards with two or even three people sitting up inside. I like to use the loft to hold a small lantern. Really, the only possible complaint I can think of about the tent is the lack of privacy. On a summer night, the mesh top is great for staying cool, but you might as well be sleeping out in the open as far as privacy is concerned. This may not matter in the backcountry, but if you're car camping in a dense campground, it's sometimes a little bothersome. Putting the rainfly on does cover up most of the open meshing, but there is still the clear film window which doesn't have any cover or even a way to attach a cover if you wanted. All in all, though, I wouldn't trade this tent for any other tent I've ever seen. This is not an exaggeration. I don't know how many times people have seen the tent and asked where they could get it. It's not cheap, but you'll use it forever.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from BUY THIS TENT! This tent does require a little practice before you set it up in the field for the first time. Once you figure it out, its easy and quick. Its a little heavy for backpacking and I'd call it a 2.5, not a 3 person. At the current clearance price, its a no brainer. Had mine for 6-7 years and its never let me down. If I could think of a really good reason, I'd buy another one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Durable and Sturdy This tent has been on a lot of back packing trips, mostly to the beach and often with 2-3 people sharing sleeping space. I like the side pockets for storage and the net overhead to put light weight items in. Stays dry and warm inside. It's a Great Tent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Since 2005 and still going strong! I have been taking this tent on trips all over California. I have taken it backpacking in Yosemite twice and car camping countless times. As a backpacking tent, it is on the heavier side, but I think the sacrafice in weight is well worth the interior space. I have used the Taj 3 with primarly two people plus backpacking gear minus boots and still had lots of personal space. Boots have always been left in the vestibule. There is enough space for a third person my size (5'7" 145lbs,32in waist). There is enough space in the vestibule for a small to medium duffle bag, but not a 85L pack. As a car camping tent the Taj 3 has been perfect. I have used the Taj 3 in spring through winter. Once while camping on the north coast We got hit by a storm at night. Pooring rain, high wind, thunder and lightening kept us awake while the Taj 3 kept us dry and proved it's durability. The adjustable vent on the fly used with the doors keeps the tent from becoming clamy. The window on the fly lets in plenty of light and there are loads of space in the pockets on the sides, as well as, the attick. I always use the footprint when using the tent, which helps minimize cleaning post trip.
