I use a roller to get out all the knots that build up in my lower body. Particularly I've had chronic knee pain because of some built-up junk where my IT band meets my knee. This thing is PERFECT- you can follow the very basic instructions or just do what feels "good" (read: bad, but good). This goes beyond a basic roller and takes it to the next level. Highly recommend.

My muscles and areas of soreness have become very used to the standard foam I use as part of my daily recovery/maintainenance routine. Upgrading to this Y Roller has allowed a deeper targeted massage into areas that were no longer being affected by a typical roller. The two types of ridges "dig" into my quads, hamstrings and back muscles. Nice muscle relief!
