Comments about Timbuk2 Especial Messenger Bag - Small / Medium:
As a daily bike commuter, I have been looking for a messenger with a supporting "A" strap for sometime. Finally Timbuk2 released a bag for daily commuters, or so I thought.
So I sold my trusty Osprey Momentum backpack and bought 2 of these (one in each size so I could compare before deciding which to keep as REI doesn't yet stock them in stores). I went with the S/M and found it had just enough room to fit clothes, shoes, and a lunch for a day's work. I would have preferred the organizer pocket to be on the outside of the main pocket, but that is a minimal gripe.
Fast Forward to 5 days of daily rides, and I found one of the front seams just below the "bike lock strap" had torn open. This was a seam where the waterproof plastic material met the condura nylon... clean tear. I had read another review from the Timbuk2 site where the bike lock strap ripped off as well due to poor single row stitching - this seems like the same issue. Clearly these seams are not properly reinforced, and/or the spacing they are using for the stitching mated with the plastic material is creating in essence a perforated line where it just tears like mine did.
The shape, size, and design of this bag were superb, but clearly the material choice, structural integrity, and execution are flawed. This is not uncommon with first iterations of a new product, I just hope it gets fixed soon. First (and probably last) Timbuk2 product I have ever purchased. Returned it and went with a Patagonia Half Mass Courier bag... so far so good (1 ride only).
Wish REI would bring back their own brand of bike messenger musette bags with an "A" strap for cyclists, at least I can trust their craftsmanship.
Service and delivery comments:
Delivery was super fast, could not have asked for more on the shipping time.
Was this a gift?:
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
