Comments about Snow Peak Mini Hozuki Lantern:
I've been a big believer in Backpacker reviews, and so when I saw this get the editor's choice award I figured it would be a great option to replace my old backpacking lantern. I bought it this spring in time to use on a backpacking trip in Zion National Park. Unfortunately I was really disappointed...
- The biggest issue is with the "silicone rubber lamp shade". This pulls off the lantern easily, and while storing in the top pocket of my backpack this would almost always come off or get rolled up. Even more upsetting was the fact that dirt/dust/hair/etc clings to this rubber shade. The inside of the rubber shade is sticky, and everything clings to it. So almost immediately the inside of your lantern gets coated in gunk.
- Turning this lantern on and off is kind of a pain, as you need to click in the entire top of the lantern multiple times/hold it down for certain lengths of time to get it to turn on to the correct mode and then adjust to the strength you want.
- The magnetic loop at the top of the lantern is too large to fit through the loop at the top of my tent as my old lantern did. I imagine many others have similar loops in their tents they'd like to use. I realize I should have been aware of this before making the purchase, but it just seems like this large magnetic loop is going to be too bulky for many peoples uses.

Comments about Snow Peak Mini Hozuki Lantern:
I bought this based upon reviews I read in an outdoor backpacking magazine. Using my dividends, I made the purchase simply because I wanted a small, lightweight light to illuminate my tent/hammock while in the woods.
I was very impressed with how much light, and how soft of a light, was brought forth inside of my hammock this past weeekend (April 20-21) when I was hanging in the Catskills. The light did just what it was supposed to do -- and it did its job quite well.
The shade on the lamp diffuses the light nicely. I also liked how I could dim the light to fits my needs and read. And the magnet is awesome.

I'm a bit of a "light nut"; always looking for the newest flashlight/headlamp/lantern that's better than something I already have.
When I saw this neat little lantern in the REI store I wasn't sure if this was really worth the money they were asking for it. But after playing with it in the store and observing it's easy to use and bomb-proof design I took the plunge and bought it.
The light is brighter than similar-sized lanterns and the battery life appears to be quite good, especially at the dimmer settings. The case is pretty robust and should hold up well to rough treatment. One of the neatest features is the magnetic hanging loop, making it possible to put this lantern almost anywhere in a few seconds. And the magnet is very strong so it won't fall down accidentally.
Overall this lantern makes a very practical addition to any backpackers kit.

Man! Good job on the marketing Snow Peak! I have to say, I was intrigued by the unique style of the light. Then I watched the product video and I was sold. I thought "Awww a couple in the woods gathering berries, I want to do that too". Asinine, I know but hey that's marketing for you. Advertising aside, this really is a great little lamp. Its super compact, and the magnet loop is extremely handy. It's great for reading in the tent (as most lanterns are almost too bright for reading). I actually really like the candle feature as well, it creates a cozy environment for some reason. It's also pretty darn bright for how small it is. It would be great for maneuvering around the house during a power outage, or even an alternative to a headlamp (if those aren't your cup of tea).

I bought this for a 10 yr old and it was very well received. It makes for a great "place anywhere" type of tent or camp light. There is not much light output but it is cast evenly rather than having rings and focus points. The draw for this product is more for the gadgetry/uniqueness than for functionality/necessity.

Best light for lighting a tent. Most lights are either painfully bright or not bright enough. This light gives off an almost perfect level of warm light perfect for reading or general use to light a tent.

Comments about Snow Peak Mini Hozuki Lantern:
I'm glad the other reviwers had good things to say about this "lantern." Personally, I think I've come across a few too many flaws that will not allow me to take the Hozuki Mini out into the field with me. Let me begin by mentioning the merits of the lantern:
First of all, the lantern does what it's supposed to do. It lights up an area fairly decently, and that's without question. The design of the lantern seems sturdy enough and can be used without the silicon "lamp shade." (That's not recommended, however). The magnetic loop, although made of rubber, seems like it'll take some decent stress without any problem and keep on going. The magnetic base, itself, is nice for one reason alone. It can be placed on a metallic surface and stay put, allowing you to point it in different directions. Once you figure it out, the operation of the light is fairly simple, as well.
Now, the problems I've noticed:
The magnetic base. Although magnets have become popular in a lot of lighting devices, I'm still not sold on them. If placed in (As another reviewer mentioned), or on, a bag, the magnetic ball may damage sensitive items. I'm not a fan of magnets, so that just may be me.
Light Output. Although the lantern is rated at 60 Lumens, the way it's spread makes this lantern useless for anything other than tent lighting (Or very limited area lighting). Now this isn't really a problem, considering the uses for the Hozuki Mini, but it's the type of lighting that gets me. Albeit an LED light, the light output seems really incandescent. Some people might like this, but I prefer soft white lighting. Again, this may be just another personal taste. The "candle light" modes reminds me of anything but a candle. The flickering seems "harsh" and "jagged." As a matter of fact (Even on it's low setting), the flickering actually irratated my eyes more than anything.
The Housing and Silicon Lamp Shade. The housing seems pretty sturdy, as I mentioned earlier, but has a couple of flaws that are hard to find, unless you really look. The Hozuki Mini is rated at an IPX4 (Light rain, and light moisture), but that seems questionable due to the design. When you slip the silicon lamp shade off, to put the batteries in, you'll notice a gap. Now, that doesn't seem like a problem, since that's where the lip of the lamp shade slides in and around. However, upon closer inspection, I noticed a small gap within the gap (Gap-ception!), that goes right into the battery housing. If the lamp shade were to move (Which it does, a lot, very easily), that would defeat the purpose of the IPX rating, since it seems very likely that water could easily enter the unit.
Functions. This is more of a minor thing, than anything. When you want to activate the lantern, you have to press a small globe located on the bottom of the Hozuki (It's inside the lamp shade. Think of a Sorry! popper, thing). At first, this was a little difficult to figure out, but wasn't a problem afterward. All functions of the lantern are operated from that little globe. The only issue I have with this is, sometimes the globe doesn't respond as one would think. Multiple, hard presses are needed, at times, to use the Hozuki Mini.
Aside from that:
The Hozuki Mini seemed like a noble effort, but was just lacking in a few areas. I can see this being used in the home (Although it would make a terrible area lantern if it didn't have anything to hang from), in emergencies and in a vehicle. Anything related to really close quarters, or to entertain the kids with. With a few improvements, I can see this product being very practical to carry around in your bag, for your indoor and outdoor adventures. But until then...

Comments about Snow Peak Mini Hozuki Lantern:
I've had this lantern for a few weeks now and love it! For less than half the price of the Hozuki lantern, it's a steal considering how much light it produces and how functional it is! The candle mode feels like you have a real candle lit and is great for creating a more intimate setting. The only issue I did have was figuring out how to turn the light on at first, you have to hold down on the lens until the flash and then let go, once I figured this out it worked great! This feature is nice so it doesn't accidentally turn on in your backpack or something. If you are looking for a smaller sized lantern this is it, no question!
