I bought this jacket because it looks good and I needed a jacket for a 3 day back country hike and my other jacket wasnt cutting it. This jacket was light weight and worked well when rain came down on the Rockies. When I hike, I wear my hair in a high and loose bun and the hood was made well enough to compensate for ladies who hike and put their long hair up. The length was nice and allowed rain water from my pack to transition to my legs instead of down my pants. The XS was a perfect fit (I am 5'1", 115 pounds, 34 chest.
I will be returning this jacket, Size L, woman. A shell should be able to fit a sweater under the jacket, but the jacket is too tight across the chest. The jacket also curves in at the waist, so it may be a problem for body types that don't have curvature, or with a thick sweater. Nice long sleeve length will cover an average person's sweater sleeves, but if you have short arms it may be a problem. Vents under arms are not screened, but fully exposes clothing when zipped open. Nice jacket length to cover normal fleece or sweaters, but it's not going to cover your 'butt' for sitting on wet surfaces.
My patagonia rain jacket is no longer usable after 3 1/2 years of light wear - it is peeling uncontrollably on the inside, so that it is no longer water resistant/repellent.
I love Patagonia, and their products are well made, long lasting, and environmental. Unfortunately, it appears I can no longer wear several of them. This jacket was listed as "regular fit." For whom? I'm 5'3, l07 pounds - not exactly huge. I have a much older model of this jacket which I've worn as an outer layer for years, especially when I hike on cold, moist days in Massachusetts. I thought it was time to get a new one, but the hip measurement on the current model is 4 inches smaller than my old one. That translates into a jacket I can zip closed over a thin layer of underclothing but not over a layer of fleece or a warm sweater. I had to return the new jacket. I tried on a medium, but I swim in it (every place but at the hip, which is still not very loose.) Please, Patagonia, loosen up (literally.) This jacket has a string to tighten the lower edge. I wish there were more to tighten.
Love this rain jacket -- kept my upper body completely dry during heavy rain while doing fieldwork in the tropics. Light and breathable, with pit zips, which is essential for the hot, humid, rainy conditions I frequently encounter. I particularly like the adjustable hood, which actually stays in place while I'm moving. I also tried on the TNF Venture Jacket, but found that this one fit better. This is actually my second one, purchased after my dog decided the first was a snack.
This jacket was exactly what I was looking for. It's waterproof, light and compact. It's perfect for hikes and light packing. Morning runs and bike rides are no problem with a not too baggy design or too snug. Armpit vents are perfect when it warms up. Had the Northface Venture but took it back for this jacket instead. Better fit and material and jacket can stuff into pocket makes this the best buy for this type of jacket.
I was looking for a rain jacket to keep me dry on my daily bike commute to work. I live in rural Alaska, and this summer has been pretty rainy, especially in the mornings when I'm biking. I found this jacket, but was talked out of it by an enthusiastic REI employee who was all hyped up about the new great Lightweight Dry.Qâ„¢ EVAP nylon found in the Mt. Hardware Plasmic Rain Jacket. My feelings on that jacket can be saved for a different review. Bottom line, after 3 months with the Mt. Hardware jacket I returned it and bought this Patagonia Torentshell jacket in yellow. I LOVE it. The pit zips allow for ventilation, if needed. The fabric is very breathable. I have worn it to work in rain blowing sideways and taken it off and been completely dry underneath. Not only that but the cut is great! I think it is rather cute. I am 5'8" with a long torso. The medium works great for me.
This rainshell is perfectly sculpted to keep out the weather and provides every which adjustment so you can remain dry. I'm 5'5" 110lb and the small fits dashingly. The cut is very flattering for casual use, and the extra length is much appreciated for keeping all underlayers covered in especially inclement weather. Packs nicely into left pocket.
Definitely bummed with this purchase (and will be returning soon). New Mexico's monsoon season was definitely too much for this jacket. Even on my first wear, water seeped through the jacket and left my skin moist, not to mention how hot it got. This jacket did not keep me dry, but it most definitely did not leave me cold (a plus I suppose). I am a bit suspicious that this jacket had been previously returned by another person because of a mysterious orange stain on the inside that I didn't notice until after purchasing. Seeing all the other reviews, I'm led to believe that this jacket just got a lot of use before I purchased it.
I must run: rain or shine. This jacket allows me to splash through serious downpours and still enjoy myself.
