Comments about REI Sheridan Jacket - Men's:
I picked up this jacket the last time I strolled through the local REI. I didn't plan on getting anything, but when I saw this jacket on display, I was intrigued. I tried one on, and now I own it. I would NOT have bought this jacket based upon the website pictures. Not that it looks different, it just looks a lot better in real life.
Let me describe my expectations for this jacket, as I think that always effects the rating. At first, the jacket's style was why I tried it on. I was expecting the jacket to be a bit casual, light-weight, water resistant, wind resistant, and stylish. This jacket meets all of my expectations, and a bit more.
First off, the term "soft-shell" can mean something different to everyone. Any avid adventurer knows this… To me, it's a soft jacket used as the top layer which is more breathable then a hard-shell. Basically, a happy middle ground between a fleece jacket and a hard-shell jacket – offering a bit of both worlds. Of course, I do not expect a soft-shell to have all the benefits of a hard-shell.
Based upon what I've seen, there are 2 different kinds of soft-shells: A stretch-woven soft-shell, or one with an outer "membrane". Basically, the stretch-woven material looks more like fabric and doesn't have a rubbery or plastic feel. This jacket is of the stretch-woven type, and therefore is not as water resistant/proof as one with a membrane. Whereas this jacket may not be completely waterproof, it's pretty darn good at beading-up the water (see picture). Water will soak into the jacket if you rub it in, but repels "free" water as described.
The outer fabric texture is really nice and smooth. It doesn't look like it would repel water, but it does. I really like this because I don't like the rubbery or plastic-type outer layer. I've been out in the rain quite a few times, and it's always kept me dry. The inner fabric texture is a waffle-fleece, nice and soft. It's not a thick jacket, and I've been comfortably warm down to about 55 degrees or so.
This is a close fitting jacket at the right size – I could fit into a large, but a medium is nice and snug. I've noticed that the forearms are a bit tight, but I prefer a snugger fit and have larger forearms than most. Just something to keep in mind if you have Popeye arms.
Based upon earlier reviews, I must be reading a different website description or it was changed, because I don't find anything misleading. I mean, just looking the pictures alone, I didn't expect the jacket to have an outer membrane or a hood. The specs for the jacket definitely say it is NOT waterproof, windproof, insulated, and does not have a hood. So that's what I expected. When the description says, "Urban-savvy design" and "ideal for around-town wear", well, I kinda took that to mean it wasn't a back-country hiking jacket. Btw, it is great for around-town wear, and I've received many compliments!
Overall, the jacket is holding up great. I will modify my post accordingly if there are any changes to my opinions after a few more washes and additional use. Even if it does start to lose its water repellency, a quick search shows that you can buy a spray-bottle DWR treatment for under $10 – so you won't be spending a fortune or hours of time. So ask yourself what you really need in a jacket, and make sure to read all of the specs and descriptions so you're buying something that will meet YOUR expectations.

Comments about REI Sheridan Jacket - Men's:
The first reviewer was absolutely right about the jacket not being waterproof. Luckily, I bought it without reading the misleading description on the website. I like it for being warm but not too heavy and for style since the fleece look isn't cutting it for me these days. I'm a thin guy and this jacket has a lot of room underneath for additional warming layers if necessary. If you want something to resist rain, look elsewhere. If you live in a climate that doesn't receive much rain and gets cool on occasion, this jacket might be perfect.

Comments about REI Sheridan Jacket - Men's:
I purchased this jacket with the intent of using as my go-to shell for cold weather hiking, thinking it would shed water and snow for adequate protection against the elements (the bare minimum for the word "shell" used in the description). However, this jacket is a sponge and the lack of a hood insures your head will be soaked. Unless you dump significant dollars and hours into maintaining the DWR on this jacket, it is nothing but a heavy, less-breathable, wind-resistant fleece. Whenever I go hiking, I have to also pack a hard shell just in case I catch some showers. Which begs the question, what is the point of this jacket? There is nothing shell-like about it. It is fine if you buy it with the intent of using at as an insulating layer, but why would anyone want this weight and bulk with an insulating layer? Ask yourself what you really need in a jacket; then ask yourself how this jacket will meet those needs. I bet you'll realize that this jacket is not the right choice. Attached is a photo of what a single second of water exposure will do to this jacket even with renewed DWR. I would give it more stars if it wasn't marketed as a soft-shell, but then I also never would have bought it in the first place.
Service and delivery comments:
REI has been giving me quite a hassle with returning this jacket, claiming that it was never advertised as waterproof and that I am not using it as intended. However, this is marketed as a soft-shell and I believe that REI should be held responsible for meeting shell-like qualities; lest any fleece or down mid-layer be sold as a soft-shell. Considering that I have been a member for a decade and never made a return before, I am surprised that I have been met with such criticism.
