Sets up and adjusts in seconds and locks together which is good for pulling others up shallow inclines. I wouldn't bet my life on the locking of the staff. But it is sturdy and very light. Itsd also very comfortabler. And its also great for airline travel because it can collapse to fit in check in luggage and my day pack.

I had been eyeing this staff for months and finally got a reason to pick it up when my old oak one broke. I took it out for a test run the next day, and wasn't disappointed.

Comments about REI Four Winds Carbon Travel Staff:

I have carried a previous REI/Komperdell carbon hiking staff for about five years. Very light, but very helpful for balance on uneven terrain, stream crossings, taking weight off knees on big steps, etc. The staffs must break down to smaller lengths for transport, and the joints are the critical feature. The previous version used internal compression joints, which became more and more difficult to engage over the years. This new version has a single external adjustable joint up high, tightened with a number 2 Phillips screwdriver. It is shock-corded into three pieces. The lower two pieces slip-fit into the pieces above them, with an internal compression joint. The lower joints tend to loosen up when you start using the staff after assembling it, so you have to tighten them once or twice in the first hour, but even when these joints are loose they only rattle a bit, they still hold the weight. The upper joint is very solid. The staff as a whole is larger diameter and stiffer than the previous version. So far the staff is a promising replacement for the old version, which gave very good service. Carbon is stiff and light and absorbs shock well, so it makes a very nice staff, albeit a bit pricey, if the joints can be made reliable.
