REI Four Winds Carbon Travel Staff is rated 3.6667 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lightweight and Sturdy I have carried a previous REI/Komperdell carbon hiking staff for about five years. Very light, but very helpful for balance on uneven terrain, stream crossings, taking weight off knees on big steps, etc. The staffs must break down to smaller lengths for transport, and the joints are the critical feature. The previous version used internal compression joints, which became more and more difficult to engage over the years. This new version has a single external adjustable joint up high, tightened with a number 2 Phillips screwdriver. It is shock-corded into three pieces. The lower two pieces slip-fit into the pieces above them, with an internal compression joint. The lower joints tend to loosen up when you start using the staff after assembling it, so you have to tighten them once or twice in the first hour, but even when these joints are loose they only rattle a bit, they still hold the weight. The upper joint is very solid. The staff as a whole is larger diameter and stiffer than the previous version. So far the staff is a promising replacement for the old version, which gave very good service. Carbon is stiff and light and absorbs shock well, so it makes a very nice staff, albeit a bit pricey, if the joints can be made reliable.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Could be better, but with improvements I got this with my dividend for travel hiking. It works well as long as the ground is rock hard. Any soft ground for example after a rain and with even a half inch of tip penetration, the segments come apart on lifting. There is no way to lock them and only a bungee cord to keep the pole together. I had to find a rubber stopper that I reamed out to jam on the area from just past the tip to the basket to prevent it from happening every step. REI should look into providing a securing mechanism or soft ground tip for this rather expensive item. I think it could be a serviceable item if the segment separation issue was addressed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well designed but one caveat Just returned from two weeks hiking in Snowdonia in Wales and Lake District in England. First use of Four Winds Carbon Travel Staff. Overall, very happy with this product. It collapses nicely and just fits into a 21"-22" tall carry-on size rolling bag. No hassle from TSA or UK counterpart, despite sharp carbide tip. Provides adequate support while carrying a full day pack with water reservoir -- I would not try using it with a full size pack; it is simply not strong enough. No instructions are provided, so it requires some playing around to figure out how to disassemble the three sections. It also does not come with an end cap for use on pavement. The provided end cap is really only for protecting your belongings from the sharp tip. I also found it difficult to lash onto my day pack's dedicated walking pole straps. The three sections flop around too much. The camera mount really requires a small ball head and/or other quick release mechanism, which still proves somewhat cumbersome to attach and remove. Either way you have to unscrew the top most handle/grip, which will invariably get lost somewhere along the way. REI really needs to figure out how to keep this upper handgrip still attached to the staff when using the camera mount -- some kind of tether is needed. That along with a rubber cord to tie the three sections together when disengaged would make this a five star product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from nice carbon staff but marginal joints These carbon staffs are light and strong and also absorb shock. They are very nice to aid balancing on tricky trails and stream crossings, and to take the weight off ones knees going up or down steeper trails. But they must be built in segments with joints, so they can break down and fit in your luggage. It's hard to design and build really good joints for these. This staff has a new kind of joint. The inner part of one end fits into a counterbore in the other. The outer part of the staff meets up, end to end, segment to segment, so the staff cannot collapse under load. There is a tricky mechanism internal to the segments, you turn the segment to tighten it to hold it in place. This latter mechanism has not worked so well for me. If I don't tighten it really hard, the segments get loose against each other, creating a small gap. Every time you set the staff down, the gap closes up, and the staff taps against itself, which is annoying. If you tighten the joint really hard, then it can lock up to the point where it won't come apart again. So although this is a really nice staff in most respects, the joint design just hasn't held up very well for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stick comes apart if bottom gets stuc I took this stick hiking in Newfoundland; whenever the bottom got stuck in mud, the stick came part; there seems to be no way to lock it and the rubber bands inside that hold it together when not folded are not as strong as mud suction. Worthless unless you are walking on pavement and who uses a walking stick for that? Collapsable canes hold together better than this does

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it should I had been eyeing this staff for months and finally got a reason to pick it up when my old oak one broke. I took it out for a test run the next day, and wasn't disappointed. Durable, lightweight and easy to stash in my pack when I need my hands free.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for airline travel and sturdy Sets up and adjusts in seconds and locks together which is good for pulling others up shallow inclines. I wouldn't bet my life on the locking of the staff. But it is sturdy and very light. Itsd also very comfortabler. And its also great for airline travel because it can collapse to fit in check in luggage and my day pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lightweight I bought an extra heavy duty tip at REI, which was needed for noise reduction, stability and grip (ground purchase). Sometimes I need a shorter hiking stick, esp. when going up a steep slope, or when I want more of a cane style, which this one, alas, will not adjust down to. Light and strong though, and that's why I am giving it a try.
