Comments about Casio G-Shock AWGM100-1ACR Atomic Solar Watch:
Let me start by saying this is a very nice watch. I like it immensely. The analog/digital readout is nice. The solar aspect means no battery changes. Once I got it I set it in the sun for a few hours and it's shown as fully charged ever since (over 1 month on my wrist). It's atomic, meaning is syncs with the atomic clock in Denver, CO every night at midnight, so I don't ever need to set the time. It's quite durable and seems waterproof, so far.
Here are the only things that I'm having a problem with. The back-light and the luminosity (is that a word?) of the analog hands and the lines representing the numbers of the face of the clock.
This watch is nearly impossible to read at night. The luminous capacity of the hands and "numbers" is very very low. Unless you've just come out of a very bright room into total darkness, you can barely see it. So, in the middle of the night when you wake up and check the time the only thing I can make out is the double line "||" that represents the 12 o'clock position.
Next is the back-light. It's actually kind of cool how it lights it up, it looks like it's illuminating some fancy architecture... but the light does not come from behind the face, it comes from the 6 o'clock position. The analog hands are white, for the minute hand, and red for the hour hand. I can always see the minute hand but the red hand is basically invisible in the amber/yellow back light. Now this would be fine, perhaps, if you were able to read the digital readout with this back light, but it actually makes it harder to do so.
I'm still looking for the watch that fills all my needs within this price range and until I do, I'll keep this one. However, as soon as the perfect one comes along, I will most likely be returning this one.
