This looked good and the price was right so I took a gamble and ordered it. The clamp will open to about 1-1/2", but seems to be designed to work more effectively in the 1/2" - 1" range. The clamp held, even while moving the light around. This is a single LED lamp, so don't expect a lot of light. It works fine for lighting my keyboard in a dark room, reading a book, and using my Kindle. I wish that it was just a little bit brighter. The coils in the arm for the light are quite fine which allows it to be lightweight and easily adjustable. There was no slippage of the clamp, or drooping of the coiled arm. Great buy, especially if you need to light a small area. Good for camping for reading books.
