Specialized ski/hike mechanism frees the upper cuff from the lower part of the boot and offers enough movement to comfortably hike to untouched stashes
When you're ready to ski, the cuffs lock directly into the lower shell to maximize power transmission on the descent

Don't discount these boots if your not an advanced skier. I bought these boots after about an hour of trying several others in the store. I learned to ski this past Christmas so I'm not an experienced skier by any stretch of the imagination. However, I figured I could grow into these so I took the chance. I took them out for the first time this weekend and they were awesome. My feet stayed warm. The skis seemed more responsive. My turns seemed almost effortless. I felt like a whole different skier. The moldable liner alone was well worth the extra money. If your new to skiing but found it immediately addictive, these boots are worth a look. I'll be skiing with them for years.

I was nervous about buying new ski boots and afraid that I would spend a lot of money on boots that would hurt my feet. I could not be happier with my decision to get these boots! They are SO comfortable and warm. The nice man at REI spent over an hour with me making sure that I tried on every option and I was happy with my decision. He picked out boots for me based on my skiing ability and knew so much about how ski boots are supposed to fit. He was right, if you are looking for an advanced ski boot that is still comfortable, these are the way to go!
