The Madsen Bucket cargo bike features a large bucket to maximize cargo capability, from kids to hounds to groceries, it can carry it all!

  • Steel frame is built to support the large, 40 gal. LDPE rigid plastic cargo-carrying bucket while remaining easy to ride and handle
  • The oversized bucket offers phenomenal cargo space and passenger-transporting capability; comes with 2 removable bench seats and 4 seatbelts
  • Step-through frame design and upright riding position makes it easy to mount and pedal the bike; adjustable for a variety of riders between 5 ft. and 6 ft. 6 in.
  • SRAM X5 trigger shifter guides the X5 rear derailleur quickly and precisely through the 9 gears
  • Bike comes with a 38-tooth chainring installed along with a larger 44-toothed chainring, so you can optimize gearing ratios for your needs with a simple swap
  • Similar to baby strollers, a quick push of a button on the brake lever engages the front disc brake as a parking brake, helping prevent the bike from rolling when parked
  • Rear linear-pull brake works along with the front disc brake to facilitate controlled deceleration
  • Sturdy enough to support heavy loads, the double-walled rims feature a high spoke count to ensure lasting performance
  • Integrated front wheel lock is bolted to the frame so you have a lock with you wherever you go
  • Oversized, 2-legged kickstand provides plenty of stability and keeps the bike upright when loading passengers and cargo or parking the bike
  • Chainguard helps keep clothes clean and out of the and chain; chain guides minimize chain slap and keep the chain running smoothly
  • Rounding out the whole package are front and rear fenders and a plush saddle for great comfort
  • Specs on the Madsen Bucket Bike are subject to change

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about Madsen Bucket Cargo Bike - 2013:

After much comparison shopping for cargo bikes, mostly online, we found this bike on super sale and decided to give it a try. We purchased this bike to haul children, dogs and other items around Philadelphia. It is a fun cargo bike! Easy to ride once you get a little practice. The center of gravity does take a little getting used to. Once you get moving it's pretty easy to maneuver. The bike is heavy, but it's a cargo bike so this is to be expected. It can be difficult to move into and out of a building without help. Our 8 year old loves riding in it and although we haven't tried yet, we could bring her friend in the bin too. The bin is also great for moving two dogs AND stuff around town. One large problem, the bike has been out of commission for the majority of our ownership.

    Service and delivery comments:

A few weeks into proud cargo bike ownership a flat tire escalated into a twisted derailleur and broken derailleur hanger. Unfortunately we could not get a new derailleur hanger at REI or order one from our trusty neighborhood bike shop. We have to go through Madsen to obtain this unique part. The part arrived (after two weeks and at least three phone calls to Madsen) broken. It appears this is a weak spot in the design. Repeated calls to send another one or two derailleur hangers have been as of yet unsuccessful in getting the item shipped. Customer service at Madsen needs MUCH improvement. Owned the bike for 6 weeks- out of service for over 4. At this point we're debating returning the whole thing and getting a Surly Big Dummy. It seems, in this case expecially, you get what you pay for. Overall review- purchasing this bike is a gamble. Are you feeling lucky?

Comments about Madsen Bucket Cargo Bike - 2013:

My Madsen is perhaps my favorite material possession. I've owned mine for about a year and it has really changed the way we get around. It has become my car replacement for all trips in town. It can easily haul my two kids and a week's worth of groceries. This bike is easy to ride even with a large load and wiggly kids in the back. The kids (3 and 5) love it and protest if we ever have to take the car. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to carry kids and cargo.
