Rated5out of5byfromGreat Bike!I just bought this bike Saturday, March 29, from the store in Anchorage. This is the first bike I have had since I was probably 14 so I did my comparison and took my time shopping around. I hadn't planned on spending this much money but REI offered the 20% off and I took the bait. Have already put about 10 miles on it and I am so happy with it. The only thing I may change is the seat, it is thin, but they all are. I will be sacrificing my body to see if I can adjust to it though. Everything on the bike seems to be of great quality and I'm not too worried about the parts due to REIs awesome return/fix policy. If you are shopping in Anchorage, HIGHLY recommend Tim! He is highly knowledgeable and doesn't pressure you into anything. He told me what I may think of buying but never pushed me, just offered his advice as a rider himself.

Rated5out of5byfromIt's OK, even for senior citizens ---I am 75 years old & have no recent experience with cycling, but bought this bike after getting encouragement from my grown kids. To my pleasant surprise, it hasn't been difficult to re-learn. I've had the bike less than a month & have only ridden about 50 total miles so far, but my rides have been both on & off pavement & are getting longer. Shifting is easy & I've had no foul-ups so far. I did have a flat tire after only 4 hours riding, so installed better quality tubes & have had no more tire problems. I am 6'1" tall & tend to get a sore neck when riding, may need to raise the handlebars a bit so I can ride more upright. There does seem to be a bit of a conflict in the standard bike "fit" instructions when applying them to a "Twenty-Niner". This bike initially appeared too large for me, even though it is my correct size based on the printed standards. I'm now glad I didn't elect to go with a smaller size in response to the printed instructions.

Rated5out of5byfromGreat Bike!Absolutely love this bike. Went into the Round Rock REI (North Austin), and the staff set me up perfectly. I couldn't decide if I wanted a "Medium" or "Large" sized bike. They let me test out both sizes, set it up perfectly for me, and I went with the Large. Overall this bike is a STEAL! Great for trail riding (although stay away from anything excessively rocky) or even just taking it out for a cruise. Brakes are awesome, feels great and those 29" tires are just awesome. It's a slight bit heavy, but honestly I would rather get the Matador, save the $200+ and have it be a pound or two heavier than Ponderosa.

Rated5out of5byfromGetting back in the game.Three years after a catastrophic Achilles tendon tear, I have taken up mountain biking. I hadn't been on a bicycle in over 15 years, but the Matador is such a smooth, easy riding bike, it was easy to get back in the groove. I mainly ride the country roads arou.d the farm, and trails down by the creek. I plan on expanding my trail riding soon and don't have any doubts this bike can handle it. The only thing I have changed is the saddle, I needed something a little softer. I highly recommend this bike to anyone who wants to get back in the game!

Rated4out of5byfromreally enjoying this bikeI used to ride road-bikes, but had been out of biking for a few years. Decided to take up mountain biking. Grabbed a 2012 model Matador at REI during a sale. Great price. Very glad I went and got advice from the staff at REI and got this 29er. It's been an absolute blast. I ride in New England on a variety of trails but most are pretty rutted, rooty and rocky (with some steeps), and this bike has been great overall. But right away I made several mods to address some problems with the bike. The Avid BB5 brakes were simply inadequate, so I upgraded to BB7. This was a cheap and easy upgrade that made a huge difference. Looks like the 2013 model comes with better brakes; that's good. BB5s were a joke. Tires (Nano Raptors) are way too smooth for the kinds of trails I ride. I'm now running Racing Ralph on back and Kenda Nevegal on front. Major improvement! Also the Weinmann wheelset went out-of-true pretty easily and were quite heavy. Have replaced these with Mavic Crossride. Much lighter and straighter. Next upgrade: a 100mm fork. So, I'm a bit of a serial upgrader, but even right out of the REI store, this bike has been great. So happy to be out in the woods on a bike!!

Rated4out of5byfromSeriously worth every pennyI have last year's model, and let me say this bike has been good to me. Since it looks like the only big thing that has changed is an upgrade to hydraulic brakes, I thought I would give my thoughts and update last year's review. The Matador is my first bike since childhood so I have made many beginner mistakes in maintenance and use, but it has handled it very well. As a heavy guy (started last year at 230 lb and down to 210 now) I have pushed this bike to its limits riding technical Texas rock gardens and winding single track with considerable drops, but the frame has held up just fine. The 29ers make all the difference on the technical trails. I honestly can't imagine hardtail life before them. Big rocks are still big rocks as you go up hill, but you CAN manage them with the big wheels. They also make fast downhill single track just plain fun. The 29ers also make my 4 mile commute a relative breeze and I have ridden up to 36 mile stretches with them. At this point, I have two complaints. The most annoying one is the drive train. It can be finicky. However, it does teach you to start simplifying your ride and picking the best line instead of shifting around all the time. The other bit is the 80 mm of travel. If you are looking at doing drops more than a foot or two, you will start bottoming out. That said, I have easily put 1000 miles on this bike between commuting and mtb and I am EXTREMELY pleased with it. I strongly suggest this bike to anyone looking to try mountain biking or updating to 29ers without breaking the bank.

Rated5out of5byfromRediscovering bike ridesIt's been 15+ years since I've owned a bike. The Novara Matador 29er Bike offered a great value and good starting point to biking. I've had the bike for almost a month and have traveled 130+ miles. I have the XL frame - makes such a difference (I'm 6'3"). The bike is great. Modern shifters make changing gears quick and easy. The disk breaks are exceptional - you can stop on a dime. The stock saddle on the bike is really hard. Yes, I'm new to biking but it was too hard. I replaced it and it made a huge difference.
