REI finally started using Polartec fabric. No other synthetic fabric can compare. Two complaints I have on these are that the calf area is too big and the colors are terrible. Long underwear should always have a standard all black option without silly looking colored stitching. I am a former body builder and have very large calf muscles. I'm surprised to see how much extra room these have in that area. I find that slightly uncomfortable and they don't retain heat well in that area or wick moisture as well as a result. I'm hoping next year's are better but I still can't find one I think is a better product at this point. Base layers all seem to have issues at least for me.

I tried wearing these as a base layer under my Marmot uninsulated ski pants. I froze my butt off. I had to put on a thermal base layer and then put these on over. I was skiing in Vermont and the temp. was around 25. They may work OK for spring skiing but they don't provide any insulation on cold days.

I needed a base layer of some sort for my 17 mile bicycle commute. Since there aren't any temperature ratings listed I decided to try the midweight first.
Yesterday it was 20 degrees F during my morning commute and my legs stayed warm and dry. I wasn't too warm or too cold, they were basically just right. I wore a pair of convertible hiking pants over them for wind dampening purposes.
This morning it was 10 degrees F during my commute and my legs got just a little cold. I wasn't uncomfortably cold, but unlike the previous morning I could definitely feel the cold.
I'm 6'2" tall, 215 lbs, and I typically wear a 36x32 pants. I got the Large size and they seem to be good in length and maybe just a tad loose at the waist, but I tried on the Mediums in-store and they were too small to be comfortable.
Overall, these seem to be good at keeping the moisture away and keeping you warm when it's 10 or so degrees F below freezing. I imagine they would be better at even lower temps with a more substantial outer layer.
