Comments about REI Campware Nonstick Frypan - 12":
My buddies and I do multi day fishing/camping trips where cabins are our base and a big breakfast starts each day.
As the everyday breakfast chef I often struggle with the typically inadequate supply of beat-up cookware that often inhabits rental cabins. For eggs, I can easily make do with any of my small 6"- 8" camping or cook kit skillets but when cooking large amounts of breakfast meat it is a pain using three small frying pans when one decent pan would do.
I have searched in vain for a 12" or larger non-stick aluminum skillet JUST for that purpose for a long time but they all suffer from stupid design flaws like steel construction, additional loop handles, lousy folding handles, completely detachable handles that attach with wing nuts, (really dumb), a high price tag or all of the above. I even considered buying a decent commercial non-stick 14" pan and grinding off the rivets to remove the handle and making my own detachable handle for $30 less than the 14" GSI Pinnacle but instead I opted to buy a griddle. Too bad I didn't find this first.
It is strong with a heavy wire coated handle that folds and locks nicely, (just like the GSI Pinnacle in the 8" & 10" size) The coating on the handle insulates somewhat and protects the Teflon coating when the handle is folded against the pan. At 12" It is PLENTY large enough for my needs yet folds up to make packing a bit easier. I am sure the non-stick coating could scratch over time or from abuse but I baby my non-stick by using only plastic spatulas, etc so it should last me a VERY long time like my other non-stick home cookware. I also bought a stuff sack for it, (a lot of trial and error to get the ideal size) to help protect it too.
This is NOT a backpacking pan or probably not even a top choice for a home-use pan but if you want a quality large non-stick skillet to fry up a mess of bacon or sausage for your mates when living large away from home…
….look no further!
Anybody want to buy a griddle…
