I have pretty much every bag that REI sells--I have a real nerdy problem with bags--I love them! As many as I have, I felt like I needed a bag that could serve me better as a grad student, commuting all over Boston. This bag wins. First of all, there are two different styles of this bag: regular and womans. I thought this was just a gimmick, but after examining both in REI, I realized that the womans style is actually legit. The straps contour around the bust and have a softer padding. Also, the womans bag is slightly shorter so that it ends above your bottom (the regular version rested in the middle of my bottom and was very uncomfortable). The womans version is also quite a bit lighter. That being said, I don't feel as though I am getting cheaper quality or loosing out on precious space. I adore the front mesh pocket--I keep my lunch in there. I also love the fact that you can store the suspension cords when not in use, so you don't have a bunch of straps hanging all over you. The laptop compartment is great--I still put my computer in a laptop sleeve, just to be safe. Love the color--got the purple and gray one. LOVE LOVE LOVE this bag. I plan to use this bag for school, work and commuting.

I commute on the bus to grad school daily with this pack. I tried on just about every pack at REI and couldn't find one that was comfortable, roomy enough, and had a well padded laptop pocket. Just as I was about to give up I found this pack and it has been perfect for my needs. The laptop pocket is so well padded (especially on the bottom) and snug that I usually don't use my sleeve. The shoulder straps and back padding make it comfortable even loaded with laptop and huge books, and all the pockets make it easy to find what I'm looking for. There are three zippered pockets but the pictures don't show that the middle one has several pockets within it for organizing small items. And finally, love the two outside pockets-- I can keep a water bottle and tea cup with me. It's probably not the best pack for long hikes, as the waist strap is pretty minimal, but for shorter distances it's fine. Only wish it came in other medium or dark colors besides magenta and black.
