Comments about Mountain Hardwear Lander Laptop Pack - 2011 Closeout:
I replaced an REI 30L backpack with this pack after searching high and low for the perfect pack. I use this primarily for commuting into work, but also use it for hikes if I need a larger capacity pack than my usual 19L day pack. It's great for work because the color is low-key, but I like that the yellow accents keep it from being boring looking.
The functionality is what makes this pack stand above the rest. With two very large main pockets, it can hold plenty, but there are enough organizer pockets and cinch straps to bring it down to a very small size if you're just carrying a book and some personal items. The padding on the back is sturdy enough without adding a ton of weight - this pack weighs about half of what similar sized packs generally weigh. I love that the hip belt is removable - a little detail that similar packs, like the comparable REI version, don't have. The zippers are very strong and thick and it seems impossible to snag them. The zipper pulls are thick aluminum, improving their durability without adding to the weight. Packs like this are never waterproof, but I've been impressed at the water resistance it has demonstrated. (It also has an internal laptop holder, which works really nicely and protects all manner of stuff, including a platypus, if that's more your speed). There are also plenty of convenient places outside the bag which you can use to hang your caribiners.
The only improvement I would make is for the water bottle holders on each side to be a bit bigger. They can hold a Kleen Kanteen, but struggle to hold a liter nalgene bottle.
