I bought this backpack for my wife, for day hiking.
She loves it. The pack is very comfortable, lightweight and capable of carrying sufficient gear for long day hikes.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Lander Laptop Pack - 2011 Closeout:

I bought this pack primarily to replace my laptop backpack for school, as my kid absconded with my old pack. Let me start by saying, I'm secretly glad she did, because this is by far a much better pack all around. This pack was used during my last year of wine making school, so I can say with confidence that it was put through anything you can put it through in a regular classroom setting - and then some. It performed equally as well while commuting on my bike or day hiking, always holding whatever supplies I needed for whatever activity I had in mind. When my load is a little lighter, it cinches down easily. I really like all the loops on the front of the pack, and the reinforced zipper pulls are great for using with gloves or mittens on. The padding on the back really helps keep you from sweating, and the ripstop fabric sheds water (and wine) quite nicely, and has held up quite well in the past year that I've had it. It is also hydration compatible, though I have not used that feature myself.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Lander Laptop Pack - 2011 Closeout:

I replaced an REI 30L backpack with this pack after searching high and low for the perfect pack. I use this primarily for commuting into work, but also use it for hikes if I need a larger capacity pack than my usual 19L day pack. It's great for work because the color is low-key, but I like that the yellow accents keep it from being boring looking.

The functionality is what makes this pack stand above the rest. With two very large main pockets, it can hold plenty, but there are enough organizer pockets and cinch straps to bring it down to a very small size if you're just carrying a book and some personal items. The padding on the back is sturdy enough without adding a ton of weight - this pack weighs about half of what similar sized packs generally weigh. I love that the hip belt is removable - a little detail that similar packs, like the comparable REI version, don't have. The zippers are very strong and thick and it seems impossible to snag them. The zipper pulls are thick aluminum, improving their durability without adding to the weight. Packs like this are never waterproof, but I've been impressed at the water resistance it has demonstrated. (It also has an internal laptop holder, which works really nicely and protects all manner of stuff, including a platypus, if that's more your speed). There are also plenty of convenient places outside the bag which you can use to hang your caribiners.

The only improvement I would make is for the water bottle holders on each side to be a bit bigger. They can hold a Kleen Kanteen, but struggle to hold a liter nalgene bottle.
