Comments about Suunto Ambit Multifunction Watch:

This watch is perfect for what I want it to do. Turn on The GPS and quickly provide a position. Turn the GPS off and The watch functions as a normal multi-function watch. I'm still testing the battery life in the non-GPS mode and I'm at 1 month and it's still going. Also, if you a time accuracy person this watch is for you! Every time you get a GPS posit the time is updated off the satellites.

Comments about Suunto Ambit Multifunction Watch:

This watch completely blows my Garmin out of the water, I went outside for my first run and it linked up almost immediately. I was expecting to wait at least 30 seconds, but nope, there was absolutely no delay. My Garmin 405, sometimes takes in excess of two minutes, and I live in Chandler, AZ, where there are no trees or tall buildings. In addition to the watch, Suunto provides great web-support, with a powerful website containing wealth of information. It also tracks temperature, barometric pressure, elevation, and much more. It also (I guess unlike previous models) can be setup on the watch or through the web-site. Software updates are easy too, my first update was loaded yesterday. Way to go Suunto! The only downfall is, it is a bit bulky, but that wouldn't keep me from choosing it again.

Comments about Suunto Ambit Multifunction Watch:

I bought this after considerable research and have found it to be nothing but frustrating. Moveslink which is required for operation is highly unreliable and the updates are often followed with apologies of 'sorry we weren't quite ready yet' The watch does not work as a GPS which allows you to retrace your steps and thus is useless for those of us who actually go out and sometimes have to back track. The watch touts a "find back" which only sends you in a straight line back to your beginning regardless of whether or not that straight line sends you off a cliff. In my opinion this watch is a very expensive novelty. I would recommend trying a competitor at the very least.

Comments about Suunto Ambit Multifunction Watch:

An update on the Ambit as I have had this for quite some time. Suunto promised updates and has come through with great updates for this watch. You can now download routes and have them display as a map on the watch where your position is updated in real time. This is a very useful feature.

For my needs this is a great marriage of a training and ABCGPS watch. For those that do not want the training aspects, Garmin has a new watch, the fenix that has comparable ABCGPS features.

Suunto plans another major update in November that promises to add much more functionality and customization. So far the updates have been on time with promised features.

Comments about Suunto Ambit Multifunction Watch:

I run a lot on roads and trails and do races from 5Ks to marathons, and also do weeklong wilderness backpacking trips in the Rockies. The Suunto Ambit seemed like the ideal all-round GPS sports watch for both activiites.(esp. since several reviews said the Garmin 910Xt didn't have a very reliable barometric altimeter) I liked the buttons in place of a touchscreen, weather resistance, (reportedly) reliable altitude readings, option to display GPS coordinates, and choice of frequent GPS signals for running or the once-a-minute option to extend battery life on backpacking trips.

Unfortunately, the Ambit wristband does not pivot much at all where it meets the watch, and the angle is so sharp that the "natural" shape of the wristband is for a wrist that's even thicker than it is wide. Who has a wrist shaped like this?? Also, the angle of the band is sharper at the top of the watch face than at the bottom so it's not symmetrical either. This tends to point the watch face slightly away from me instead of toward me.

I tried on a friend's Garmin 405 before I ordered which is almost as thick as the Suunto Ambit (0.65 vs. 0.7 in thick) to see how it fit, so I thought I knew what to expect. Unlike the Garmin 405 however, the sharp angle of the Suunto Ambit watchband lifts the watch (and the clasp on the opposite side) off the front and back of my wrist even while it pinches the sides. I have a narrow wrist, and if your wrist is more "round" or is larger then this watch might fit fine. Given the build of so many serious racers and triathletes, a company that makes a "unisex" sports watch that only fits people with really large wrists - or perfectly round wrists - seems to be missing out on a big share of their target market!

It may be great for some people who have the right wrist for it. I really wanted to like this watch, but no matter how much I loosen the wristband, it pinches the two sides of my wrist even when it's so loose I can see daylight between my wrist and the band on the front and back. Bottom line, I realized within half an hour I'd never want to wear it.

Comments about Suunto Ambit Multifunction Watch:

After buying the X10 and being stoked about its functions I returned it two weeks later because it litterly fell appart while sitting in class. When I saw the Ambit and if REI did not have a GREAT return polocy I would have avoided this watch completely. I chose the all black model with the heart rate moniter and it has proven to be the greatest watch I have ever purshased. I have used it fly fishing, hiking, and even at work to see how much I walk at my job. The only problems I have is the button lock does not lock the watch to the current screen and the black bezel has already scratched and chipped. Over all great buy!

Comments about Suunto Ambit Multifunction Watch:

I am a backcountry trail/adventure runner who was looking for a reliable GPS watch to record and map my wilderness runs. The Ambit seemed to fit this bill; "The GPS for explorers". It is solidly built, rugged, and quick to receive a GPS signal. After using it for several months, there are too many things about not to like. Most functions cannot be changed without connecting to a computer and the Movescount website. The navigation functions including compass, location, and waypoints cannot be used when in exercise mode. The advertised 50 hour battery life only applies to the once/minute recording rate; not very accurate when flying down switchbacks! The display map is in Google Maps, not Google Earth, which shows only roads, not trails or topography. All in all, for me, its not worth the price.
