I have a lab mix german short hair (60lbs), she is quite a hunter, and she used to drag me crazy on walks, she would walk me more than the opposite. I read a bunch of stuff online about dog backpacks, how it would make the dog think they're on a mission etc.. did not believe much until ....i got one!
Gosh she is doing so fantastic now. I take her hiking in the woods, no leash needed, she walks by me the entire time. she carries our water and food and it is amazing how she likes it!!
I havent tried the bag with a lot of stuff in it so not sure how tough it is but so far so good! We are both loving it!
Would recommend to anyone!
Plus, if you have a REI store around, I advise you go in with your dog to try it on. That's what I did.

i am happy with this pack, soley because my dog has no problem with it. the only slight issue i have noticed with the pack is the sizing. all the straps are adjustable but even at the shortest adjustment it doesn't fit perfectly on the dog, still has a little slack, but if i went with a pack size smaller it would not fit the dog at all. despite the small slack the pack works great, hiking several miles with supplies the pack remained in place, no rub marks, and during the hike my dog was able to move around without the pack being restrictive. the side pockets are located slightly toward the rear so the front legs dont contact the bag. pockets have plenty of room. i got the dog a large and was able to pack 3 days worth of gear in both pockets.

I've only used this a few times on small hikes and walks around the blocks. It has a surprising amount of space; enough space to carry a couple days worth of dog food. I bought a large for my Bernese Mountain Dog (who is admittedly on the smaller side for the breed), and it's almost too big. He doesn't seem uncomfortable in it, and now he equates it with walks so he loves it. As other reviewers have said, the weight has to be distributed VERY EVENLY or else it slips to one side. A good pack, but there's nothing about it that I think makes it just so great.

I would have to agree with other reviewers, that the sizing is a little off. For my 60 lb lab, I got her the medium, which fits her perfectly. As soon as I put it on her, she was super excited and ready to go! We did a 4 mile hike with it on and I had absolutely no problems with the clamps and straps, even with her running ahead of me at time and even shaking while adjusting. I found that there was no hot spots or rubbing issues at all on her, and she was more then happy to wear it. She packed two small water bottles on each side, some snacks and treats for her and her tug rope and doggie poop bags. The compartments are the perfect size, not too large or small. She was more then esctatic to actually have a job when we were hiking! The pack is relatively easy to figure out and to fit onto her, they have actually made it quite easy now to adjust. No issues at all on the straps staying, like I said even with her running and shaking while wearing it. Just be cautious of the sizing. My pup has about a 32 inch girth & the medium was the perfect fit! Definitly recommend this product, and the price is the best out there for the quality!

I love this pack. I have a 35lb pit bull and I bought a small but it was way too tight around her neck so I sized up to a medium. The straps allow enough adjustability that I can put it on my 80 lb bull mastiff as well. I had another dog pack that rubbed really badly but this one doesn't rub at all. My dog loves to wear it and has so problem going on week long hikes with it.

What I have noticed with all Pet Bags not just the ones from REI is that the sizing is off. If you dog is 50 – 100lbs and considered a "large" dog it will end up using a Medium size bag. I have a 55lb Aussie and the medium fits great. The back strap of the bag is a bit loose on him but he does not seem to mind. I can fit everything that he need for a long day hike. The only thing that I wish it had was more pockets to place smaller items in. Other than that I love the pack since my last back pack I bought for him from a pet store broke.

First problem is that sizing is off. Way off. All the straps (girth included) but one fit my 50 lb dog (not overweight) perfectly. The one that didn't had to be all the way out to be long enough - that said, I was still able to get a perfect fit. I could just see a dog easily falling between sizes because of that fit.
My dog took to it wonderfully - it is easy to get on and adjust. The saddle bag size is perfect to prevent overloading and they are located nicely over the shoulders to avoid strain on the back. Walking around in my neighborhood with a 1 liter bottle on each side, with the dog in a heel, the pack did just fine. The problem came when I actually took it out hiking. The cam locks DO NOT WORK when the dog is not in a simple slow heel. They pop open, allowing the webbing to easily slip. Once the straps loosen, hot spots emerge, then blisters, then unhappy dog, ultimately resulting in unhappy owner. I can't tell you how many times in a simple 8 mile hike I stopped, adjusted the straps, and re-locked the cams. Bottom line - I can't recommend it.

Like most of the other comments, the sizing is definitely off. I have a 67 lb lab and the large was too big. The medium is a perfect fit and the pack will definitely get a lot of use this summer!

This pack is great for larger dogs! I have a 100lb lab and a 100lb+ Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. We go hiking regularly. I have 1 pack and they switch off during our day hikes. It is easy to adjust when moved over and fits both dogs very well.
I plan on doing some 3-4 day backpacking and will purchase another pack so each dog can carry their own food and water.

I bought this for my 3 yr. old German Shepherd that is definitely not overweight. The front fits his chest just fine but the rear strap appears as though it's made for a greyhound. It's so small that it will not even come close to buckling. I called REI thinking there was a mistake while assembling but they don't even have the dimensions for the rear strap. Have to return...
