Bouldering: Movement, Tactics, and Problem Solving is your step-by-step guide to the techniques you'll need to suceed—and have more fun—when bouldering.

    • Author: Peter Beal
    • Softcover: 222 pages; black-and-white photographs and maps
    • The Mountaineers; copyright 2011
    • Addresses moving efficiently, handholds, footholds, body position, types of rock, traverses, resting, falling, spotting, training, competitions and bouldering at any age
    • Bouldering: Movement, Tactics, and Problem Solving measures approximately 8.5 x 7 in.

You see a rock and you wonder if you can climb it … that’s the essence and the beauty of bouldering—both the newest thing in climbing and, quite possibly, the oldest form of the sport. You can boulder anywhere: on small outcroppings of rock, at the foot of cliffs, on walls, even on buildings. Equipment needs are minimal (some sticky shoes, a crash pad, maybe some chalk), and opportunities are everywhere. In the gym or out in wilderness. Alone or with friends. A road trip adventure or a quick session after work.

Easy, right? But there are techniques that will allow you to tackle tough problems while staying safe and having more fun. Long-time boulderer Peter Beal draws not only on his own expertise but also on that of other experienced climbers including John Gill, Ben Moon, Fred Nicole, Marc Le Menestrel, Jamie Emerson, Ty Landman, Daniel Woods and Alex Johnson.

At the heart of bouldering, like life, is the search for solutions. Think of Bouldering: Movement, Tactics and Problem Solving as your cheat sheet.

Comments about Mountaineers Books Bouldering: Movement, Tactics, and Problem Solving:

Got this book hoping to gain some tips on how to best improve my bouldering. Already an intermediate level (v5-v7) boulderer, this book sadly disappointed. It is geared more towards the complete novice. Don't waste your time or money, I should have known better.
