Comments about Therm-a-Rest Trail HD Sleeping Pad - Special Buy:
When I got this I thought it was perfect for my use. To test it I inflated it right out of the package and let it sit inside overnight. 24hrs later it was squishy and had lost a lot of air. I decided to try it out indoors before taking it to the field. I again inflated it with a few breathes. Laid on it for about 30 minutes and a substantial amount of air had escaped. It had lost so much air that I was in contact with the floor. Maybe I got a bad one. Don't know but plan to return and possibly upgrade to a more expensive model.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Trail HD Sleeping Pad - Special Buy:
Let me start by saying that I'm a "minimalist with comfort concerns"... so when I backpack I don't carry a lot of gear but I carry the minimum to enjoy nature and rest my body at night time. After all, you can't really enjoy your time in the backcountry if you have an aching body the next day while backpacking.
In winter my pack carries a synthetic sleeping bag (primaloft) around 4 lbs, for temps well below 0, water, a heat reflecting tarp, food, layering system, first aid and this pad alone (I don't carry a second foam pad to use under this one). I use the tarp as a ground cloth under the pad and then wrap it over my sleeping bag as a taco this way I can see the stars and my sleeping bag doesn't get moist with condensation inside a bivvy.
This pad is only one inch but when fully inflated is really comfortable. I sleep well and warm all night long and the next day my body is well rested for another long day on or off the trail.
I pack it with some air in it folded in 4 or 5 sections and placed INSIDE the pack as my back padding support. That way it serves as a frame/padding, it doesn't get punctured/scratched with branches while hiking and scrambling over rocks or when I take off the pack for a break.
My only concern is its self inflatable properties which there are non at all. Since I don't carry a whole lot of gear I usually don't have trouble finding a place to camp even at night; so I stop late at night, lay the tarp, the pad and the sleeping bag but then I have nothing to do while waiting for the pad to self inflate, which it never happens anyway (not even at home). I wait 30 minutes before I give up and inflate it myself. This also requires some good coordination since you need to open and close the valve to stop the air from escaping. Not something you want to do when it's really cold. It doesn't bother me ANYMORE as I'm already used to it but I thought that it would at least get some loft without my help as advertised.
It's a good pad weight/comfort/r-value/price rate wise but you might be disappointed at first, get it on sale and you'll feel a lot better.
