Comments about Elie Straight 120 XE Kayak with Rudder:
My husband bought the 14' version (Elie Strait 140 XE) and I chose this 12' version (Elie Strait 120 XE). We just spent our first "Spring-Summer-Early Fall" paddling small-to-medium lakes and many winding rivers. Actually, we're former Wenonah Spirit II canoe owners who decided to make the switch to kayaks when the kids grew-up and left home. We thought it wise to try reasonably priced kayaks before transitioning to other manufacturer's longer and more expensive models. We think we made a wise decision.
First, these are terrific looking kayaks and perform absolutely great for the price. My Strait 120 XE is red/white two-toned, and my husband's Strait 140 XE is yellow/white two-toned. They easily look like far more expensive kayaks. Both are workhorses as they can stow a fair amount of cargo. The Swede-form, V-hull allows the kayak to move fast while maintaining excellent tracking. Stability is excellent.
And the cockpit, equipped with a comfortable mesh, EVA-padded seat (with a very convenient horizontal bottle holder) and oversized foot pegs, makes any short or long paddling trek enjoyable. Also, a drybag-lined hatch is easily accessible from the cockpit. The reflective perimeter lines are also a nice touch.
The only minor complaint that I have is that a small bit of water occasionally works its way into the main storage hatch. But this is not a serious "bone of contention."
CONCLUSION: Excellent price point + excellent construction + excellent speed and performance + look 'n feel of more expensive models = an absolute steal.
Elie kayaks were just what we were looking for.
*NOTE: We also decided to buy quality kayak paddles for our first 'yaks, so we invested in Werner Camano Carbon paddles. We're glad we did.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
