Comments about adidas 3-in-1 Climaproof Storm Jacket - Men's - 2011 Closeout:
I use this jacket both for hiking/camping and also for everyday wearing. I was actually very surprised by the value I got from this jacket. From a generic manufacturer like Adidas, I was expecting a half baked attempt at trying to get into a niche market. But that's not what I got.
My backpacking is basically 3 season plus; I guess I would call it. I am fairly temperature tolerant, so my primary goal is to pack lighter and save some of my weight capacity for cameras or food. This jacket is actually perfect toward that goal. It is multi layered, with a removable hood. So even when it is cold - and wet - and my fingers are completely numb, I can easily attach or remove the hood or the liner. I very frequently wear the liner all by itself as I hike, and grab the shell off my pack when I'm stopping to take pictures or sitting around cooking, reading, etc. Or if it starts to rain, I grab the shell, zip the liner right in, and I'm back on the trail in a couple minutes. With the liner in, the hood drawn, and the wrist cuffs velcro'd, it is very very cozy in the cold.
I have not had any issue with waterproofing or functionality. The pockets are perfectly placed for accessibility when you have a waist band on your pack. The hood is adjustable and fits perfectly over my bare head or my balaclava.
Back at home, I'm very comfortable wearing the liner by itself as a light weather walkabout jacket. And of course the shell is great for wet weather. Typically I don't keep the hood attached for city use.
A couple quick words of caution if you're considering this jacket. First, the liner zipper - when worn separately - can be slightly annoying. I don't have an issue with this since the important times (zipping into the shell during bad weather) it is fine. It is only problematic when the liner is worn by itself, zipped to itself. The other thing is that you should expect your size to fit with no extra room. If you're wearing it only for everyday use, or if you're wearing sweaters or other layers maybe consider a size up. But for typical outdoor hiking use, buy your size and it will be perfect. Snug enough to cut wind effect and catching branches, but not restrictive. I am 6ft 2in, and the XL was perfect for me.
At the time of writing this, I have owned the jacket for 3 months. I have used the jacket for 5 multi-day hikes, in fair weather and rain and snow too. I even slept one night in the jacket due to unplanned low sub-zero temps.
