Comments about Motorola MOTOACTV GPS Fitness Monitor and Smart Music Player - 16GB:
I was waiting for a device like this to come along for so long! It is compact and easy to use. It's a great music player and keeps track of workouts easily. I used to use my phone for music and it was always a hassle carrying it around during a run.
It gets a signal a lot faster than my older GPS devices ever did. I use the wrist strap primarily and its comfortable. I also have the arm strap, but I can't look at that as easily. The cool feature that allows you to not even look is the tap feature. You tap the screen during the workout and it speaks a summary in your headphones. No more getting distracted by trying to stare into the device. I find it very useful when trying to keep on pace during races to check my pace between laps.
If you have a Motorola phone with the software on it, it will allow you to get texts read out on the device and to take calls on it (which is probably most useful on a bike since I don't bring my phone with me on runs). It gives you a weather forecast updated from your phone too, but I don't find that very useful. I would like to see a Google Voice plugin so I can get my GV texts on the device.
The map needs to have a better zoom feature and the lap feature should be customizable for type of workout, like 1 mile laps for running and 5 miles for biking.
The battery still doesn't last as long as I'd like. I used it for 4 hours straight and it was on 30% at the end. I guess for all that it does, it's still not bad. I can put it on the battery saving mode to extend the life, which should help extend it out to the 8 hours they claim.
I spoke to a rep about the wireless headphones and HR monitor. They had a problem with sweat (and salt) buildup on the sensors that made them not work as well so they are working on the problem. Honestly, I think those are a good idea, but for the price, I am fine using the wired headphones and the standard HR monitor.
I got this when it first came out and I never had a problem like the other reviewer. I did the firmware updates fine and have had no issues syncing and software updates.
The best part of this device is the upgradability. Moto is constantly updating the firmware to make the device have more features, work more efficiently. I'm excited to see what they will add on on the next update!
Hope this review is helpful! I love mine!

Comments about Motorola MOTOACTV GPS Fitness Monitor and Smart Music Player - 16GB:
In concept this is a 5 star product. The execution is less than that. It has been steadily getting better thanks to firmware (FW) updates that have fixed many of the issues but it is still a bit short of the promise. Today it does a good job as an MP3 player, working with Bluetooth headphones, an ANT HR monitor, and as a GPS. The battery life is now pretty good.
This is my 3rd unit. The first one failed the day I got it when trying to update the FW. Moto recalled the second one because they said it was identified as having a problem that would cause FW update failures (like the first one although I did not see this). Third one seems to be working fine.
Originally the battery life was awful to the point of being nearly useless for most athletes or fitness enthusiasts. Two subsequent FW updates having made major improvements.
The computer software is still a bit iffy and I have sync problems on one of my computers. The step counter is not accurate for daily use (under counts normally activity; seems more accurate when used for fitness walking, hiking, running). The calorie counter is not accurate for intense workouts like hill running, trail runs or intervals.
I suspect Moto will fix most of the issues with time as they have with the battery life issue. That said it seems to me that those of us that bought this early on paid to be product testers and let Moto sell this before they had wrung out the FW. For most people buying it now (you still might have to update the FW) would yield a very nice product.
One big remaining hole is the SF700 Bluetooth headphones with HR monitor. Moto put these out as part of the offering. You couldn't actually buy them. Then it was coming soon. Now they don't even show up as being offered. One can hope that Moto addresses this but for now they have gone largely radio silent on the topic.

Overall, I like the product and I would recommend it. It is better than the ipod nano at this time.
